조선시대 왕후들의 언간 서체 특징 연구 (A Study on the Characteristics of Calligraphic Style in the Hangul Letters by Queens of Chosun)

초록

한글 창제이후 궁중 여성들의 언문사용은 남다른 격조를 띠면서 활발하게 유지되었다. 그 중 왕후들이 남긴 자료로는 언교(諺敎)⋅소설필사본⋅교훈서⋅일기⋅언간 등이 있다. 특히 이 중에서 언간은 왕후들의 개인적인 삶을 엿볼 수 있는 자료이며, 수렴청정 기간 동안 조정에 내렸던 언교는 한글이 공식적인 문서에 사용된 첫 사례라고 할 수 있다. 남겨진 왕후들의 언간 묵적으로는 인목왕후⋅장렬왕후⋅인선왕후⋅명성왕후⋅인현왕후⋅정순왕후⋅혜경궁 홍씨⋅순원왕후⋅명성황후⋅순명황후의 필적 289편이 있다.
본고에서는 이들 왕후 10명의 언간을 통해 그 통계적 현황과 서체가 갖고 있는 특징을 밝히고자 하였다. 이들 왕후들의 언간에서 볼 수 있는 서체는 대부분이 궁체로 반흘림, 흘림, 진흘림의 특징이 잘 표현되어 있다. 이들 대부분은 한글 궁체의 단아하고 우아한 미적인 요소가 깃들여 있어서 높은 서격(書格)을 나타내고 있으며 한글서예사에서 중요한 자리매김을 하고 있다고 볼 수 있다. 또한 장법에 있어서도 마치 한문서예의 행초서처럼 획의 비수(肥瘦)나 먹의 조윤(燥潤), 글자의 대소(大小)로 강약을 잘 나타내고 있다.
왕후들은 궁중의 최상류층의 여성으로 궁중의 문화를 주도해 나갔던 만큼 글씨에 있어서도 궁체의 변화를 주도해 나가고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 특히 인목왕후⋅장렬왕후⋅인선왕후의 글씨에서 반흘림의 특징이 나타났고, 명성왕후⋅인현왕후⋅정순왕후⋅혜경궁 홍씨의 글씨에서 흘림의 변화가 현저해졌으며, 또 정순왕후와 혜경궁 홍씨의 글씨에서 부터는 궁체의 백미인 진흘림의 형태가 나타나기 시작하여 순원왕후의 글씨에서 진흘림의 전형이 확고해졌다. 따라서 왕후들의 언간은 한글 궁체의 형태가 바뀔 때 마다 가장 먼저 왕후들의 언간에서 볼 수 있는 다양한 서체가 그 변천을 선도해 나가고 있었음을 알 수 있었다.

영어초록

After the Invention of Hangul, the women at Royal Court uncommonly used the Hangul with high tone and activity. Until now there are materials that the queens left the writs of appointment, novel copies, didactic books, diaries, and letters written in Hangul. They are the precious materials that we can glance at the private lives of queens especially from their Hangul letters.
During the regency by queen mother from behind the veil, the queen had given the writs in Hangul to the Royal Court. I think it was the first case that Hangul was used in the official document. There are the 289 pieces of remains of Hangul written by 10 queens; Queen Inmok, Queen Jangryeol, Queen Inseon, Queen Myeongsung, Queen Inhyeon, Queen Jeongsun, Princess Hong (Hyekyeongkung Hongssi), Queen Sunwon, another Queen Myeongsung, and Queen Sunmyeong.
In this treatise, I tried to clarify the statistical situation and the characteristics that their calligraphic style had through the letters of 10 queens. I could see that most of them were written in the court style of Hangul calligraphy and expressed well the characteristics of half-cursive style, cursive style and true cursive style. Their letters had aesthetic elements of elegance and gracefulness and showed the high dignity of calligraphy. I thought those points played a role in occupying the important position in the history of Hangul calligraphy.
Moreover we can see that in writing characters, the calligraphic style of letters well exposed the general strength & weakness like as in the cursive grass style of Chinese calligraphy through the fatness & slimness of the stroke, or the dryness & richness of Chinese ink, or the bigness & smallness of characters.
I could make certain that queens took the lead the change of court style in Hangul calligraphy because they led the culture of Royal Court as the highest class women. In particular, the characteristic of half-cursive style appeared in the handwritings by Queen Inmok, Queen Jangryeol and Queen Inseon. I could find the distinguished change of cursive style in the writings by Queen Myeongsung, Queen Inhyeon, Queen Jeongsun and Princess Hong.
The true cursive style which was the finest example of court style of Hangul calligraphy started to show up in the writings by Queen Jeongsun and Princess Hong, and the model of the true cursive style settled down from the writings by Queen Sunwon.
The change of the court style appeared in the Hangul letters of queens at the earliest time. They could accept the change and could lead the change because of their highest position. And they showed the change of court style in their letters every change. Consequently we could see queens led the changes and we could find the various calligraphic styles in their letters.
