초록

지역은 사회적 관계 속에서 일상생활을 영위하는 주민들의 삶의 터전이며, 개인이나 집단의 정체성을 제공하는 사회 문화적 장소이다. 사람들에게 거주지는 하나의 소우주이다. 거주 공간으로서의 장소는 우리에게 안정과 영속의 이미지를 부여하며 가치의 중심으로 자리한다. 지역문학은 이렇게 고유한 장소의 아우라를 재현하고 생성할 문화적 힘의 장(場)이라 할 수 있다. 지역은 중앙의 통제와 지시에 의해 채워질 텅 빈 공간이 아니라, 정신의 역사와 환경을 갖고 있는 문화 생성의 단위이다.
지역문학은 고유한 미학적 경험의 장소가 그러한 지역의 경계 내에 있음을 환기시킨다. 그렇듯 지역문학은 자기중심적 세계관과 토착적 정서를 기반으로 자족적으로 구현되는 문화적 실체이다. 그러한 장소에서 지역의 작가들은 같은 이야기를 다르게 반복하기를 통해 자신만의 고유한 영토를 확보하고자 한다. 그것은 중심은 물론이고 다른 지역문학과의 차이를 바탕으로 자신의 존재가치를 증명해가는 지난한 일이기도 하다.
그런 관점에서 이 글에서는 광주·전남작가회의에서 펴내는 회원작품집 『작가』 11호(2005년)부터 18호(2012년)까지에 실려 있는 소설 14편을 대상으로 지역작가들의 변방의식과 트라우마의 양상을 살펴보았다. 살펴 본 작품들의 경우 일차적으로, 장소에 내재된 역사적 기억(대체로 5·18의 상흔)을 되풀이하여 이야기하고 있는 점이 유별났다. 오랜 시간이 흘렀어도 지역의 작가들에게 무의식의 형태로 각인된 폭력의 상흔이 여전히 치유되고 있지 않다는 점에서 특히 지역을 생(生)의 아닌 죽음의 공간/골짜기로 인식하고 있다는 점에서 문제적이 된다.
한편 지역의 공간을 벼랑 끝에 선 변방으로 인식하고 있는 일련의 작품들의 경우 근대적 기획에 의해 타자/변방으로 규정된 원주민/지역민들의 삶이 얼마나 황폐해졌는가 하는 점을 문제 삼고 있다. 지역의 작가들은 ‘이제 바다엔 배가 없다.’고, 그래서 삶의 근거가 뿌리째 뽑혔다고 인식하고 있음에도 불구하고, 문제는 어떤 전망도 발견할 수 없다는 데 있다.
