대한제국기 신지식인들의 탈유학적 양상들— 근대 잡지 기사를 중심으로 — (Study on the expanded searching for the Oriental Philosophy of the New intellectuals in 20th century Korea: Focus on modern magazines)

초록

서구 제국주의의 실력과 자국의 열세를 뼈아프게 자각한 대한제국기 신지식인들은 대체로 서구적 근대화의 전철을 밟아 문명한 독립 국가 건설을 꿈꿨다. 이들은 새로운 매체인 신문과 잡지를 통해 계몽과 자강을 이뤄내려 했다. 당시의 위기를 성리학적 세계관의 한계로 인정했던 신지식인들은 서구를 수용함으로써 이를 극복하고자 했다. 동아시아의 주류 학술이었던 유교에 비판이 이뤄짐에 따라 신지식인들의 전통에 대한 모색의 범위도 유교 밖 제자백가로 넓어졌다.
지금 ‘동양철학’에 제자백가는 당연히 포함된다. 그렇다면 ‘동양의 전통’이 확장되고 있던 20세기 신지식인의 제자백가에 대한 태도나 활용은 어땠을까. 이 논문은 당시 신지식인들의 주된 담론 매체 중 하나였던 잡지를 중심으로 확장된 전통적 사유의 하나로 제자백가에 대한 탐색의 양상을 규명하고자 근대잡지가 창간되기 시작한 1896년으로부터 국권피탈과 함께 언론이 중단되기 직전인 1909년까지 발간된 잡지 안에서 특히 관자(管子)와 묵자(墨子)를 다룬 기사를 분석한다.
제자백가에 대한 탐색은 17세기 후반 이후 실학자들에서도 확인되었고, 신지식인들의 탐색 역시 조선 후기로부터의 면면한 흐름 안에 있다는 것은 분명해 보인다. 이런 맥락에서 이 논문은 관자와 묵자라는, 유가의 전통적 대적자들을 중심으로 이들에 대한 인식과 태도가 어떻게 달라졌는지를 확인한다. 이용후생이라는 실질적 목표가 이론의 가치를 판정하는 더 중요한 기준으로 대두되면서 우주론과 인성론을 주로 연구했던 성리학의 지위는 독존에서 ‘공맹에 대한 하나의 해석’으로, 망국을 초래했다는 비판의 대상으로 옮아갔다. 동시에 양명학과 같은 유학 안에서의 대안이 주목받기도 하고, 관자나 묵자 같은 제자백가로도 시선이 넓혀졌다. 그리하여 이기의 「양묵변」에서는 묵자에 대한 억압을 한탄하고 이러한 억압을 초래한 맹자를 비판하기에 이르기도 한 것이다.

영어초록

New intellectuals during the Korean Empire, who were painfully aware of the prowess of Western imperialism and their country's inferiority, generally dreamed of following in the footsteps of Western modernization and building a civilized independent state. They tried to achieve enlightenment and self-renewal through new media such as newspapers and magazines. The new intellectuals, who recognized the crisis at the time as a limitation of the Neo-Confucian worldview, tried to overcome it by accepting the West. The scope of the new intellectuals' search for traditions expanded to include the Hundred schools even they were counted as the outside or enemies of Confucianism in the Joseon period.
Of course the Hundred schools were the one of most important "Oriental Philosophy". Then, what was the attitude and use of the new intellectuals in the 20th century toward the Hundred schools when the "Oriental Tradition" was expanding? This paper analyzes articles focused on Guanzi(管子) and Mozi(墨子), especially in magazines published from 1896 when the modern magazine began to 1909, just before the media was suspended, centering on the modern magazine, which was one of the main discourse media of the new intellectuals at the time.
The search for the Hundred schools had also been confirmed by Silhak(實學) scholars since the late 17th century in Joseon, and it seems clear that the search of new intellectuals were also within the trend from these aspects. In this context, this paper confirms how perceptions and attitudes had changed, centering on the traditional opponents of Confucianism, such as Guanzi and Mozi. As the practical goal of welfare(利用厚生) emerged as a more important criterion for determining the value of theory, the status of Neo-Confucianism, which mainly studied cosmology and personality theory, shifted from independence to 'an interpretation of communism' and to the object of criticism for causing ruin. At the same time, alternatives within the study abroad, such as Yangmyunghak(陽明學), attracted attention, and the view was also broadened to student white families such as temples and Mozi. Thus, in Yi Ki's "Yangmukbyeon(楊墨辯)", he lamented the oppression of Mozi and criticized the Mencius who caused such oppression.
