The purpose of this study was to investigate the interrelations of body mass index(BMI) with
the indicators of cardiorespiratory function and exercise performance capacity in middle-aged
women, and to improve public health by providing health-related informations regarding
overweight and obesity. The subjects of this study were 664 middle-aged women who had no
experience of specific exercises and diseases. Subjects were divided into 5 groups(BMI<18.5㎏/
㎡:underweight group, UWG, n=35;BMI 18.6-22.9㎏/㎡:normal weight group, NWG, n=220;
BMI 23.0-24.9㎏/㎡:overweight group, OWG, n=184;BMI 25.0-29.9㎏/㎡:obese group, OG, n=
199;BMI≥30㎏/㎡:severe obese group, SOG, n=26).
The obesity indicator was BMI. Cardiorespiratory indices were systolic blood pressure(SBP),
diastolic blood pressure(DBP), resting heart rate(HRrest), and forced vital capacity(FVC). The
indicators of excercise performance capacity were V˙ O2max, grip strength(GS), sit-up(SU), vertical
jump(VJ), whole body reaction time(WBRT), and sit-and-reach(SAR). Data analyses by means of
SPSS(16.0) were related to univariate analysis and multiple linear regression analysis. The results
of this study were as follows:
First, the groups with high BMI had higher blood pressure than group with low BMI. However,
HRrest of UWG was significantly higher than OWG. There was no significant difference between
groups in the FVC.
Second, the groups with low BMI had higher V˙ O2max, SU, VJ, and WBRT than groups with
high BMI. However, the effect of BMI on GS and SAR was low.
Third, the SBP was significantly interrelated with DBP, GS, and BMI. DBP showed significant
interrelations with SBP, GS, and SAR. The interrelations of FVC with V˙ O2max and of GS with
VJ were significantly high. However, HRrest had no significant interrelated variables.
Fourth, V˙ O2max was significantly interrelated with BMI and SU. The interrelations of SU with
VO2max, VJ, SAR, and of GS with SBP, DBP, FVC, VJ, SAR, BMI, and of VJ with WBRT, BMI,
FVC, SU, GS, and of SAR with DBP, SU, GS were significantly high.
Fifth, BMI was significantly interrelated with BMI, VJ, SBP, and GS.
In summary, the blood pressure of middle-aged women with high BMI was higher than the
same age group with a low BMI. There was no significant interrelations between HRrest and
other variables. High muscle strength and high muscle power is likely to be related to the good
function of respiratory muscle. However, high FVC was not an indicator of good V˙ O2max. Low
BMI was significantly interrelated with the indicators of good aerobic exercise capacity, VJ, and
WBRT. The indicators of muscle strength and muscle power were significantly interrelated with
the index of cardiorespiratory function, exercise performance, and BMI. Therefore, it was
necessary for middle-aged woman who had no specific experience with exercises and who wanted
to decrease their BMI to focus on the improvement of aerobic exercise capacity, muscle endurance
and muscle power.
