초록

본 연구의 목적은 북한에서 열린 국제 포스터 전시와 당시 논의되었던 담론들을 통하여 1950년대 후반그라휘크 미술(Graphic Art)의 대표적 분야였던 포스터에 관한 이슈들을 살펴보는 것에 있다. 1950년대 후반북한의 예술계는 1960년대 주체미술이 본격적으로 진행되기 이전으로, 그 어떤 시기보다 역동성을 지닌 시대였다. 본 연구는 당시 북한의 대표적 미술 잡지였던 『조선미술』에 실린 북한에서 열린 해외 포스터 전시들에 관한 문헌들과 같은 시기 북한 내에서 논의되었던 포스터 관련 담론들을 주목하였다. 구체적으로는 1957년에 평양에서 폴란드 포스터 70여 점이 소개된 <파란 쁠라까트 전람회> 와 이듬해 소련, 중국, 몽골, 베트남, 불가리아, 루마니아, 헝가리, 독일 등에서 355점의 포스터가 전시된 <조선인민군 창설 10주년 쏘련 및 인민 민주주의국가 포스타 전람회>의 전시평을 연구하였다. 또한 같은 시기 『조선미술』에 실린 정현웅과 엄도만의 포스터 담론을 통하여 이 시기의 북한 내 포스터가 어떠한 이슈들을 지니고 있는지 살펴보았다. 연구 결과 북한의 작가들은 당시 전시된 포스터의 주제보다는 포스터의 다양한 기법들을 주목하였으며, 국가별로 포스터의 특징을 설명하며 북한 포스터의 정체성에 대한 고민을 나타냈으며, 질 좋은 포스터를 만들기 위한 인쇄술 향상의 필요성을강조하였다. 또한 이 시기의 포스터 담론들은 그라휘크 분야에 대한 사회적으로 낮은 인식과 낙후된 인쇄술의발전 필요성, 그리고 획일화된 포스터 구성 방식을 문제 제기하였다. 이에 대한 해결책으로는 1) 포스터 작가의전문적 육성, 2) 정치적 이념을 초월한 포스터의 장르적 특수성 파악, 3) 지도자들의 포스터 전문 지식 쌓기, 4) 포스터 평가 절차의 간소화를 대안으로 제시하였다. 이러한 초기 자료의 분석은 주체미술이 확립되기 이전주요 쟁점들과 그에 대한 배경을 파악함으로써, 북한 포스터의 통시적인 흐름을 이해하는 데 있어서 단초를 제공한다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to research North Korean exhibitions exhibiting foreign posters, which represent the concurrent trend of Graphic art, and to examine the relevant issues through the discourse in the late 1950s. North Korean artistic circles in the late 1950s were more dynamic than ever, in that the Juche (self-reliance) art movement started to prevail in the 1960s.
This study covers the literature about overseas poster exhibitions in North Korea, such as articles in the iconic art journal Joseon Misul, and the controversies regarding the themes and methods of the posters in the North. In detail, the study focuses on reviews of the <Poland Plakat Exhibition>, which featured about 70 Polish posters in Pyongyang in 1957 and the <10th anniversary of the founding of the Korean People's Army>, which featured 355 posters from the Soviet Union, China, Mongolia, Vietnam, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary and Germany in 1958. Also, this study analyzes the context of discussions between Artist Jeong Hyun-woong and Um Do-man, through the articles in the magazine Joseon Misul.
According to the research, North Korean artists paid more attention to various techniques of posters than to the subjects of foreign posters displayed. They illustrated the characteristics of posters from different countries, which led to deliberation over the identity of North Korean posters. Finally, they emphasized a necessity to improve printing techniques to make quality posters. In addition, concerns were raised about the low levels of social awareness regarding the graphics, the underdevelopment of printing technologies, and the uniformity in compositions of posters. Consequently, the following solutions were recommended: 1) fostering poster writers' expertise; 2) identifying common characteristics of posters transcending political ideologies; 3) enhancing the expertise of society leaders on posters; and 4) simplifying procedures of the poster assessment. The analysis of these early North Korean poster materials provides a clue to understanding the usual flow of North Korean posters by identifying key issues before the establishment of Juche (self-reliance) art and its background.
