초록

기후온난화, 종의 소멸, 지구상의 평화 위기 등 인류의 난제는 근대철학이 주체, 자아, 이성을 지나치게 중심에 놓은 결과가 아닌가 하는 의문이 든다. 그렇다고 불교에서 말하는 만법무아론에 따라 자아는 허상에 불과한 것인가는 질문도 던지게 된다. 이 소논문에서 나는 데스먼드의 사이론적 존재론을 다루면서 존재의 자기화(selving)와 그리고 존재에 대한 네 가지 이해, 즉 일의적, 다의적, 변증법적, 사이론적 이해를 통해 자아 현상을 탐구하고자 한다. 그런 후에 자아의 실재성에 관해 숙고하려 한다.
인간 자아는 타자와의 관계 속에서 존재로 들어오고, 나타나고, 전개하고, 자신에 새겨진 약속한 것이 성취되기도 하고 배반되기도 한다. 물론 이런 존재의 과정, 즉 발생, 전개, 실현의 과정 안에, 그리고 과정을 가로질러, 하나의 통합적인 존재가 있다. 자아가 통합적이면서 되어가는 과정에 있음을 데스먼드는 자기화(selving)라고 부른다. 자아를 일의적(univocal) 의미로 탐구하면, 타자와의 소통 이전부터 시작된 비객관적 내밀한 자아, 기초적 자아를 만날 수 있다. 내밀한 자아는 욕망, 상상력, 기억을 매개로 자기 밖의 타자를 만나고 상호작용하면서 변화되기에, 한편으로는 자기 내부의 기원적 타자성과 자기 밖의 타자적 타자성을 왕복하면서 자기를 인식하고 자기를 발전시키는 자기화의 과정에서 다의적 이해로 확장한다. 또한 자아에 대한 변증법적 이해에서 우리는 자애적 자아와 몰아적 자아의 차이를 말할 수 있고 여기서 자아의 자기 초월을 통한 되어감의 종국에는 초월의 방향이 역전되어 선 혹은 최종적 계시로부터 영감을 받아 열린 전체로 나아간다. 몰아적 자아는 자아와 타자 사이를 상호매개하고 상호 초월을 인내하며 관대하게 기다린다. 데스먼드에 따르면, 몰아적 자아상이 기초적 자아, 감각적 자아 그리고 자애적 자아의 심연에 있는 약속의 실현이라 말할 수 있다. 자기화의 초월 방향이 자애적 자아를 넘어 몰아적 자아로 나아간다는 것은 개체적 자아(self)가 열린 존재 공동체(Self)로 통합되어 가는 것이 모순이 아님을 보여준다.

영어초록

There is a question as to whether humanity's difficulties, such as climate warming, extinction of species, and global peace crisis, are the result of modern philosophy placing too much emphasis on the subject, self, and reason. However, according to Buddhism's doctrine of selflessness, the question arises as to whether the ego is nothing more than an illusion. In this essay, I will deal with Desmond's metaxological ontology and explore the phenomenon of the self through the selving of being and four understandings of being: univocal, equivocal, dialectical, and metaxological. Afterwards, I would like to reflect on the reality of the self.
The human self comes into existence, appears, and develops in relationships with others, and the promises made to it are either fulfilled or betrayed. Of course, within and across these processes of existence, that is, the processes of emergence, development, and realization, there is one integrated existence. Desmond calls the process of being integrated and becoming as selving. If we explore the self in a univocal sense, we can encounter the non-objective idiotic self, the elemental self, that began before communication with others. Since the idiotic self is changed by meeting and interacting with others outside the self through desire, imagination, and memory, on the one hand, it goes back and forth between the original otherness within the self and the otherness outside the self, thereby recognizing and developing the self. In the process of selving, it expands to equvocal sense. Also, in the dialectical sense of the self, we can talk about the difference between the erotic self and the agapeic self, where in the end of becoming through the self-transcendence of the self, the direction of transcendence is reversed and opened with inspiration from good or final revelation, moving forward as a whole. The agapeic self mediates between the self and the other and waits patiently and generously for mutual transcendence. According to Desmond, it can be said that the agapeic self-image is the realization of the promise that lies in the abyss of the idiotic self, the aesthetic self, and the erotic self. The fact that the direction of self-transcendence goes beyond the erotic self to the agapeic self shows that it is not a contradiction for the individual self to be integrated into an open community of being (Self).
