한국 물때력(潮汐曆)의 두 체계 -‘7물때식‧8물때식’의 실효성과 의도성에 대한 추론- (Two Systems of the Tidal Calendar in Korea－Inferences on the Effectiveness and Intention of the 7th-Day Tidal System and the 8th-Day Tidal System－)

초록

우리나라의 물때체계는 7물때식으로 불리는 서해안형과 8물때식으로 불리는 남해안형이 병존하고 있다. 두 개의 물때체계는 일반적인 지역 단위의 문화형처럼 존재해온 것일 수 있지만, 일정한 지점을 기준으로 물때라인을 형성하고 있어서 면밀하게 계산되고 의도된 역법으로서 가능성이 충분하다. 이러한 문제의식을 기반으로 먼저 물때라인을 구체적으로 구획하였다. 근래에 물때 연구가 활발하게 이루어지면서 두 개의 물때체계를 구획하는 경계점이 파악되었는데, 본격적인 논의를 위해 기존 자료를 섭렵하면서 장흥 회진지역에서 청산도와 평일도를 거쳐 제주도를 동․서로 구획하는 물때라인을 구체화하였다.
다음으로 두 개의 물때체계와 지식이 실효성이 있는 것인지 파악하기 위해 국립해양조사원의 조석데이터를 파악하여 유의미한 지점의 1년간 조석을 분석하였다. 물때력이 달력과 달리 독자적인 역법을 구축하고 있는만큼 그 시작점에 해당하는 ‘한물’의 데이터를 집중적으로 파악하고, 민간의 물때체계와 지식의 실효성을 주목하였다. 그 결과 서해안과 남해안의 물때가 과학적으로도 1일 정도의 차이가 발생하고, 민간에서 일명 ‘조금’ 시기라고 인식하는 3일 정도의 기간과 그 이후 ‘물이 살아난다’는 시점 또한 조석데이터에서 확인할 수 있었다. 다만, 민간의 물때라인은 전라도 남해안을 가로질러 제주를 동서로 양분하는데, 조석데이터는 서해와 남해가 갈라지는 진도의 조도군도가 기준점으로 파악되는 점에서 차이가 있었다.
끝으로 민간의 물때라인이 왜 조도군도를 기준점으로 하지 않는가에 대해 추론했다. 조석데이터에 의한 기준점은 자연현상을 그대로 반영한 것일 뿐 역법으로서 기능할 수는 없는 것이었다. 물때력은 하루 단위로 세어가기 때문에 날짜 구분에 대한 기준점이 필요하다. 따라서 물때력의 기준을 ‘한물’ 때의 간조시 자정(子正) 시간으로 비정하고, 물때라인과 관련성을 파악하였다. 결과적으로 물때라인은 ‘한물’ 때의 간조시 자정 라인과 유사한 경계를 형성하고 있었다. 이를 통해 물때력과 물때라인이 역법으로서 시간의 합법칙성을 갖추고 있음을 파악할 수 있었다. 성글게나마 물때를 역법의 체계로 파악하기 위해 전통지식으로 전승되어온 물때체계와 현대의 과학적 조석데이터를 비교하였고, 유의미한 결과를 도출했다고 판단한다.

영어초록

Korea has two tidal systems: the west coast type which is called the 7th-day tidal system and the south coast type which is called the 8th-day tidal system. The two tidal systems may have existed as forms of ordinary regional culture, but since their tidal lines are drawn along certain geographical places they have enough potential to be recognized as carefully calculated and intended calendar systems. Based on this assumption, specific tidal lines were drawn.
Then, in order to determine whether the two tidal systems and knowledge of them are effective, the tidal data from KHOA (the Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency) were consulted for analysis of the tides for one year at significant points. Unlike ordinary calendars, the tidal calendar has its own unique system. Hence, this study intensively focuses on the data on ‘hanmul’, which is the starting point of the tidal calendar, and pays attention to the effectiveness of popular tidal systems and knowledge of them. Analysis of the tidal data confirms that scientifically, there is a difference of about 1 day between the west coast tide and the south coast tide and there is a period of about 3 days that folklore identifies as the ‘neap tide’ period, and there is a period that is commonly referred to as ‘water comes to life’. However, there was a difference in that the tidal line of folklore cuts across the southern coast of Jeolla Province and divides Jeju Island into east and west but the tidal data from KHOA identifies the Jodo Islands in Jindo, which divides the west coast and the south coast, as the baseline.
Lastly, inferences were made on why the tidal line that has been passed down among people does not use the Jodo Islands as a reference point. The baseline drawn by tidal data from KHOA reflects natural phenomena as they are, and cannot function as a calendar system. Since the tidal calendar is based on counting on a daily basis, it needs a reference point to count days. Therefore, this study has set the criterion for the tidal calendar as the midnight time at the ebb tide during the ‘hanmul’ period, and examined its relationship with the tidal line. The results of analysis show that the tidal line forms a boundary similar to the midnight line at the ebb tide during the ‘hanmul’ period. From this study it has been confirmed that the tidal calendar and the tidal line have validity for a calendar system. In order to understand the tide as a calendar system, this study has compared the tidal systems that have been passed down as traditional knowledge and the modern scientific tidal data. The results seem significant for understanding the tide as a form of calendar system.
