구비설화에 나타난 혐오감정의 두 양상, ‘식욕-음식’ 짝패와 ‘성욕-여성’ 짝패의 교차와 변주 (Two Aspects of Hate Feelings in the Oral tales, the Intersection and Variation of 'Appetite-food Suit' and 'Sexuality-woman Suit’)

초록

본 논문은 구비설화에 나타난 혐오를 식욕과 성욕의 관점에서 고찰한 것이다. 혐오감정은 식욕이나 성욕처럼 인간의 가장 본능적 조건에서 검토될 필요가 있기 때문이다. 그런데 혐오감정을 제대로 이해하기 위해서는 이들 욕망과 결부되어 있는 구체적 대상을 함께 고려할 필요가 있다. 욕망은 비가시적이기 때문이다. 필자는 그것을 ‘식욕-음식’의 짝패, ‘성욕-여성’의 짝패로써 설명하고자 했다. ‘식욕-음식’의 짝패와 관련한 혐오감정은 본능적 반응과 문화적 반응의 층위에서 나타나는데, 전자는 오염음식과 후자는 금지음식과의 관련성이 높다. ‘성욕-여성’의 짝패와 관련한 혐오감정은 본능적 반응과 윤리적 반응의 층위에서 나타나는데, 전자는 결혼 이전의 여성, 후자는 결혼 이후의 여성과의 관련성이 높다. 이때 전자는 여성을 창녀의 시선으로 바라봄으로써 혐오감정을 직접적으로 표출하고, 후자는 열녀(또는 성녀)의 시선으로 바라봄으로써 혐오감정을 이면적으로 표출하게 된다. 여성을, 한 인간으로서 존중받아야 될 대상이 아니라, 남성 중심의 사회, 또는 가부장제 하의 사회에서 ‘창녀’, ‘열녀’라는 이분법으로만 바라본 것이다. 그런 점에서 구비설화에서 파악되는 ‘열녀담론’은 ‘혐오담론’으로써 분석될 여지를 내재한다. 한편, ‘식욕-음식’의 짝패와 ‘성욕-여성’의 짝패는 상호 교차되고 변주는 모습을 보여주기도 한다. 문둥병 환자를 소재로 한 구비설화에서 이런 점이 잘 확인된다. 이들 설화에서 ‘식욕-음식’의 짝패와 ‘성욕-여성’의 짝패는 철저하게 문둥병 환자인 남편에 종속되며, ‘성욕-여성’의 짝패가 ‘식욕-음식’의 짝패와 동일시되기도 한다. 한 인간으로서의 여성이 아니라, 남편의 문둥병을 치료하기 위한 ‘음식’으로써 전이되고 있는 것이다. 이는 혐오감정이 다기적(多岐的)으로 분출되는 현상, 혐오감정 간의 위계상 권력 등을 이해하는 데 시사점을 준다.

영어초록

This paper examines the hate feelings to related the appetite and sexuality in the oral tales. It is noted that the hate feelings need to be examined in the human's most instinctive conditions, such as appetite or sexuality. However, in order to understand the hate feelings, it is necessary to take into consideration the specific objects associated with appetite and sexuality. Because the concepts of appetite and sexuality are invisible, I tried to explain these ideas as the suits 'appetite-food' and 'sexuality-woman.' The hate feelings of the 'appetite-food suit,' appears on the layer of instinctive reaction and cultural reaction in society. The former is highly related to the contaminated food and the latter is related to the prohibited food. The hate feelings associated with the 'sexuality-woman suit' appears on the layer of an instinctive response and an ethical response. The former is associated with the concept of women before marriage, and the latter with women after marriage. At this time, the former concept expresses the hate feelings directly by looking at the woman by the prostitute's gaze, and the latter expresses the hate feelings by looking at the gaze of the virtuous women (or the saint). Women are viewed not only as a person to be respected, such as a human being, but as a dichotomy of a "prostitute" or "virtuous women" in a male-centered society or a patriarchal society. In this respect, the 'discourse of the virtuous women,' which is understood in the oral tales, has a possibility to be analyzed as the 'discourse of hate.' On the other hand, the 'appetite-food suit' and 'sexuality-woman suit' are crossed each other and shows the variation. This is well figured out in oral tales as based on the leprosy patients. In these oral tales, the suits of the 'appetite-food' and 'sexuality-woman' are thoroughly dependent on the leprosy husband and 'sexuality-woman suit,' which are equated with the 'appetite-food suit.' It is not a woman as a human being, but a "food" for treating her husband's leprosy. This gives suggestions for understanding of the phenomenon that the hate feelings are divaricate, and that in this case, there is power of the hierarchy between the hate feelings.
