초록

본 연구의 목적은 과학적 발견에 있어 시각화가 지식형성의 측면에서 보조적인 수단이 아닌 필수적인 요소가 될 수 있는가하는 의문에 답하는 것이다. 본 논문을 통해, 과학이 세계에 대한 구체적 관찰로부터 보편적 지식을 획득하는 과정에서, 시각화가 역사적으로 어떻게 그 역할을 수행했는지 살펴보고, 지식시각화 분야가 오늘날 과학연구에 있어 실질적인 역할을 수행할 수 있는 지 검토한다. 또한, 전형성과 개별성, 객관성과 주관성의 이분법적 관점을 극복할 수 있는 과학-예술의 혼성관점에서, ‘신-감응력’개념과 ‘감각질’개념을 중심으로 과학지식 형성에 기여할 수 있는 새로운 지식시각화의 가능성에 대해 탐구할 것이다. 이를 위해, 중세와 르네상스 시대의 지식 시각화의 전통을 살펴보고, 중세의 교육적 시각화와 르네상스의 고아한 시각화의 두 전통이 서로 다른 관점의 산물이 아닌 동일한 지식에 대한 시각화의 정도의 차이라는 점을 통해 이분법적 관점을 극복할 수 있는 단초를 마련할 것이다. 나아가, 이러한 관점이 발전된 형태로 구현된 레오나르도의 중복선 드로잉을 ‘창발’의 개념을 통해 분석한다. 실제 과학 발견에 있어 지식시각화가 과학지식의 보조적 수단이 아니라 실질적인 필수적 요소가 될 수 있는가하는 가설에 대해 생물학자 라이트, 도브잔스키, 심슨 등의 연구과정의 사례를 통해 검증한다. 이들의 생물학 연구에서 사용된 하향식 접근 방법론으로서의 수학과 상향식 접근 방법론으로서의 이미지 드로잉이 함께 그 역할을 수행하고 있는 사례를 근거로, 양자의 방법론이 혼합될 수 있는 새로운 관점의 가능성을 제시한다. 이를 위해, ‘신-감응론’개념과 ‘감각질’개념을 도입하여, 구체적인 대상에 대한 실재적 ‘관찰’과 관념으로서의 과학적 ‘이론’의 합일을 지향하는 지식시각화의 새로운 관점을 모색한다. 결론적으로, 이러한 전체적인 논의를 통해 도출된 과학-예술 혼성관점에서 중요하게 바라본 최근의 지식시각화 동향을 정리하고 미래과제를 제시한다.

영어초록

The purpose of this research is for answering to a question how knowledge visualization is necessary in scientific researches not subordinate. Through this paper, I will explore how knowledge visualization has played a participating role in the history of science forms the generic knowledge from the specific observations of the real objects, and investigate whether it could continue to play a practical role in forming contemporary scientific knowledge.In addition, the possibilities of new knowledge visualization from the hybrid perspective in Science -Art based on the concepts of ‘neo-sentience’ and ‘qualia’ will be explored in order to converge a dichotomy between the typical and the individual, the object and the subject, the view point of “they” and the view point of “I”. I will study on the tradition of knowledge visualization in the Middle Age and Renaissance, and infer the fact that two different traditions, the medieval didactic visualization and the Renaissance elegant visualization were stemmed not from the different kinds of perspective but from the different degree of one. This paper argues that this clue could be suggested by rethinking the fact that the didactic and the elegant are not opposing relation, and therefore, the dilemmatic relation and the dichotomous perspectives could be transformed to the new scientific methodology. Also, this paper analyzes the drawings with overlapping lines by Leonardo da Vinch which creates the emergent cosmos from the chaos to interact with each other and referring to the eminent biologists Wright, Dobzhansky, Simpson, this paper examines that knowledge visualization as necessary factors not the subsidiary ones in constructing scientific knowledge. Particularly these biologists simultaneously used the top-down methodology like mathematics and the bottom-up methodology like their drawings and this become the converging approaches for integration of each sides of knowledge. I will investigate a range of possibilities that a new knowledge visualization with new perspective will be explored on the conceptual foundation of ‘neo-contience’ and ‘qualia’. Consequently, this paper will show the currents field of knowledge visualization and open up new vistas from the new perspective based on Science-Art hybridization.
