‘두 마리아’에 대한 묘사를 통해본 복음서들의 여성관 (The Perspective of Gospels on Women in the descriptions of two Mary)

초록

20세기 후반 페미니즘이 하나의 담론으로 정착하면서 페미니즘의 시각에서 초기 기독교 역사를 재구성하려는 운동이 본격화되었다. 이런 연구들에 의하면 예수와 바울은 기존에 생각해왔던 것보다 여성을 높게 평가하였고, 그들에게 주요한 역할을 맡겼다. 그렇지만 1세기 후반 이후 남성중심적 시각에서 예수의 가르침을 왜곡하는 움직임이 본격화되었다. 1세기 후반의 산물인 복음서도 그런 흔적을 담고 있으며, 그 가운데 특히 누가복음에 남성 중심적 시각이 가장 강하게 관찰된다.
이 논문은 이런 페미니즘의 시각과 연구 결과가 기본적으로 올바른 문제 제기를 하였지만 복음서와 초기 기독교 역사에 대한 이해 부족으로 인하여 복음서 저자들을 반페미니스트로 규정한 것을 비판적으로 검토하였다. 마가복음과 누가복음의 서술은 두 복음서가 추구했던 신학의 관점에서 이해해야 한다. 마가복음이 향유 부은 여인의 이름을 밝히지 않은 것은 ‘메시아의 비밀’이라는 마가복음의 대주제에 맞추기 위한 것이라고 판단된다. 또한 누가복음이 향유 사건의 주도자를 ‘죄를 지은 한 여자’라고 제시했던 것은 스스로 정결을 주장했던 바리사이파에 대립적인 인물을 제시하기 위한 조처이었다. 따라서 누가복음이 남성중심적 시각에서 각색된 문서라는 페미니스트들의 주장에는 다시 생각해 보아야할 요소들이 많다고 생각된다.
요한복음의 두 여인에 대한 묘사는 공관복음의 묘사와 사뭇 다른 모습을 보여준다. 요한복음에는 예수의 사역에서 중요한 역할을 했던 여인들이 여러 명 등장하며, 특히 막달라 마리아는 부활한 예수를 처음으로 만난 증인으로 묘사된다. 이는 막달라 마리아가 베드로나 애제자보다 권위가 더 높은 인물이었을 가능성을 암시한다. 요한복음의 이런 상은 공관복음의 묘사보다 페미니스트들이 재구성한 예수의 여성 상에 가깝다. 그러나 요한복음의 이 진술은 역사적 사실이 아니다. 그것은 베드로 후계자들을 견제하려는 요한 공동체의 의도를 반영하고 있는 것이다. 따라서 요한복음의 진술 또한 신학적 입장에서 해석해야 한다.

영어초록

Since the 1970s, the study of early Christianity has been greatly influenced by feminism. According to the study of feminist scholars Jesus and Paul wanted to give more opportunities and freedom to women in the church. However since the late first century Christians who had male－centered perspective began to distort teachings of Jesus. Gospels contained distorted results. Accommodating feminist perspective I examined descriptions of four Gospels on women. Especially I focused my attention on descriptions on Mary the sister of Lazarus and Mary Magdalene.
It is certain that the first Gospel degraded the position of women and underestimated the role of women. As an example the Gospel of Mark did not concede the meeting of Mary Magdalene and Jesus after Resurrection. We can interpret this description of the Gospel of Mark as the result of its effort to degrade Mary Magdalene. But I think that this interpretation is so simple. The most important theme of the Gospel of Mark is the ‘Messianic secret’. The followers of Jesus did not recognize the identity of Jesus as Messiah until Resurrection. According to this theme it seems natural that Mary Magdalene was embarrassed at the empty tomb. Therefore we can not conclude that the Gospel of Mary degraded Mary Magdalene.
Scholars who uphold the perspective of feminists argued that the gospel of Luke degraded the position of women. According to their arguments the description of the gospel of Luke on the woman who poured perfume on the body of Jesus as ‘sinful woman’ is the conclusive evidence. Because the gospel of Mark simply calls her ‘a woman’. The changing ‘a woman’ into ‘sinful woman’ can be interpreted as an act of degrading her position. But I can not agree with them. The changing of the gospel of Luke is not the result of male－centered perspective but the theology of the gospel of Luke. The gospel of Luke paid many attentions to the poor and sinners. Describing her as ‘sinful woman’ the gospel of Luke expressed that Jesus gave very meaningful role to sinners.
The descriptions of two women in the Gospel of John are quite different from those of the Synoptic Gospels. Especially according to the gospel of John Mary Magdalene was the first person to meet the risen Jesus. Scholars who uphold the perspective of feminists tend to regard this as an historical fact. But I think this is the product of the theology of gospel of John. The community of John had a sense of intense rivalry with the followers of Peter. Therefore the lifting of authority of Mary Magdalene seemed to be the product of the theology of the gospel of John.
