한 소설 두 텍스트 - 이문열의 소설 『영웅시대』의 텍스트 비평 - (Textual Criticism of the Novel - The Era of Heros)

초록

텍스트 비평은 독자들에게 검증된, 신뢰할 수 있는 텍스트를 제공하는 것을 목표로 한다. 특히 현대문학의 텍스트 비평은 텍스트의 생성사와 변천사를 밝히고, 상이한 판본들 간의 대교 작업을 통해 판본들 간의 텍스트 상이점에 대한 상세하고 정확한 연구결과를 작품 연구자들에게 제공하는 것을 목표로 한다.
이문열의 장편 소설 『영웅시대』 역시 서로 뚜렷이 구분되는 두 판본 텍스트를 갖고 있다. 이 소설은 원래 1982년부터 1984년까지 계간지 『세계의 문학』에 8회 연재되었으며, 연재 완료 3개월 후인 그해 10월 민음사에서 단행본으로 출간되었다. 그런데 이 단행본 판본은 연재판본과 동일하지 않다. 초판본에는 없던 방대한 분량의 <동영의 노트> 등이 추가되면서 총 6장으로 텍스트가 확장되며, 이 늘어난 분량은 원고지로는 약 900매에 달한다. 더욱이 <동영의 노트>로 인해 초판본에서부터 농후했던 텍스트의 사변성이 더욱 강화된다.
이밖에도 의미 있는 변화 중 하나가 안나타샤와 관련된 서술이다. 초판본에서 주인공 이동영의 연인 안나타샤(명례)는 숙청의 위기에 몰린 동영을 그의 소원대로 배를 구해 북한에서 떠나보낸다. 이것이 초판에서 안명례가 오랜 동안 이데올로기와 사랑의 애증으로 뭉쳐있던 이동영과 결별하는 방식이었다. 하지만 개정판에서는 안나타샤가 이동영을 떠나보낸 후 수상 보안대원들에게 이동영의 밀항을 고발한다. 이로서 개정 판본에서는 동영에 대한 안 나타샤의 사랑이 순수성을 상실하게 된다.
이외에도 많은 차이를 보이는 이 두 판본은 “같지만, 같지 않은” 소설이다. 그렇다면 독자들은 어떤 텍스트로 『영웅시대』를 읽어야 할까? 또 연구자들은 어떤 텍스트를 분석해야 하며 후일 이문열 전집이 출간된다면, 편집자들은 어느 판본을 『영웅시대』 텍스트로 선정해야 하는가? 그리고 두 텍스트의 차이를 독자들에게 알려야 하는가? 알린다면 어떤 방식으로 알릴 수 있을 것일까? 본 논문은 이와 같은 질문에 대한 하나의 해답으로, 텍스트 비평적인 방법을 도입해 소설 『영웅시대』의 역사·비평본 편집을 시도한다. 보다 구체적으로는 초판본을 기저본(base-edition)으로 설정해 초판본과 개정판 텍스트를 비교하고, 텍스트의 변천과정과 판본간의 상이점을 ‘상이점 기록부 Apparat’로 제작하는 작업이 시도된다. 물론 이러한 연구의 목적은 『영웅시대』 연구자들이나 독자들에게 작품 텍스트 뿐 아니라 텍스트가 생성·변형되는 과정과 그 차이점까지 정확히 연구된 ‘신뢰할 수 있는’, ‘학술적’ 텍스트를 제공하는데 있다.

영어초록

The textual criticism aims to provide the reader with a proven and reliable text. The textual criticism of the contemporary literature, in particular, attempts to show how the text evolved and developed, and to produce for researchers an accurate study on the disparities among different editions by comparing them.
Yi Mun-yeol's novel <The Era of Heros> has two versions obviously distinct from each other. It was serialized into eight parts in the quarterly magazine, The World Literature, from 1982 to 1984 and three months after the finalization of the series in October 1984, it was published in one volume by Minumsa Publishing Company.
However, this single-volume revised edition is not the same as the original serialized version. Actually, quite different. First, with the huge addition of <Dong- Yeong's Note>, which did not exist in the original version, the whole text was expanded into six chapters, amounting to 1,000 pages in total. Moreover, due to the inclusion of Dong-Yeong's Note, the speculativity that was already pervasive in the original version was intensified.
Besides, one significant alteration is the ending of the novel. In the original version An Natasha (Myeong-Rye) procures a boat for Dong-Yeong's escape from North Korea when he was faced with a political purge and this is how she cuts her own Gordian knot of the love-hate ambivalence and idealogical confrontation all intertwined together as a way of terminating her long relationship with him. As contrasted with this, the revised edition shows her reporting his escape to the coast guard after his departure, which disproves the innocence of her feelings for him.
With other discrepancies, these two versions of the "same" novel are "not identical" at all and it leaves us several questions simple but puzzling. Which version are we supposed to read? and which text are the researchers supposed to analyze? and in case Yi Mun-Yeol's complete edition is to be published, which version should be included as the authentic one of <The Era of Heros>? and should the reader be informed of the selection? and how? As a response to these questions and employing a text-critical approach, this article attempts to put together a historical-critical edition of the novel. More specifically, with the first version as the base-edition, a textual comparison will be conducted between the first version and its revised edition, while producing a 'discrepancy record apparat'. The ultimate purpose of this study is to provide the readers and the researchers as well with not only the text itself of <The Era of Heros> but also a 'reliable' and 'academic' text enriched and reinforced with an in-depth research on the genesis, evolution and transformation of the given text.
All the previous studies conducted on <The Era of Heros> use the single-volume revised edition by Minumsa Publishing Company as the text for research.
