중국 두 차례의 美學熱과 그 영향(1949-2002) (“Aesthetics Popularity 美學熱” and Its Effects in Mainland China(1949-2002))

초록

본 논문은 1949년에서 2002년에 이르는 근 반세기의 시간동안 중국 대륙에서 전개되었던 두 차례의 미학열(美學熱)의 전개과정과 그것이 현재의 중국 미학계에 미치고 있는 영향을 비판적으로 검토해 봄으로써 현재 중국 미학계가 봉착한 위기의 근본적인 문제점을 진단해내는 데 그 목적이 있다. 중국에서의 미학은 서양, 일본, 구소련의 세 가지 경로를 통해 수용되었는데, 이는 그들이 미학이라는 학문을 바라보는 다양한 시각을 가능하게 해주었다. 본 논문의 연구대상이 되는 50년대와 60년대 이루어졌던 제1차 미학열과 80년대 재차 이어졌던 제2차 미학열 현상은 하나의 사회적 현상으로 대두되어 진행되었다는 점, 여느 국가들과는 달리 강력한 전파력을 지니고 빠르게 진행되었다는 점 그리고 사회, 정치적 목적으로 활용되었다는 점 등에서 그 특수성을 찾을 수 있다. 그러나 이와 동시에 사회, 정치적인 통제 안에서 급속하게 발전되어 온 중국의 미학이 그 학문적 순수성을 잃어버리고 결과적으로는 원래의 미학이라는 학문이 연구되어오던 연구 범위에서 벗어나거나 그 학술적 지표를 잃어버리는 등의 폐단을 낳았다는 점 또한 부정할 수 없다. 미학열이 종결된 당대 중국 미학계가 더 이상의 미학열 시기의 이론을 능가하는 참신한 이론을 생산해내지 못 한 채, 이전까지의 연구 성과들을 맴돌며 답습하는 정도에만 머물고 있는 원인 또한 여기서 찾을 수 있다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 이러한 난관을 극복하기 위한 방안으로 미학열의 진행과정과 그 후의 미학계의 행보에 관한 비판적 고찰을 시도하였다.

영어초록

The Ultimate aim of this paper is to indicate the fundamental problems of the crisis that Chinese aesthetics is currently facing by using the critical appraisal method on the particular development process of the "Aesthetics Popularity(美學熱)", that arose two times between 1949 and 2002 for about half of a century in mainland China, and the current impacts of it over the aesthetic field. In China, there were three main channels from they had received a study of aesthetics: Japan, some western Europe countries and the former Soviet Union. These different sources enabled them to deal with a very advanced study of aesthetics with various perspectives. The uniqueness of the main object of this study, the first "Aesthetics Popularity" movement which happened between the 50’s and 60’s, and the second "Aesthetics Popularity" movement, which occurred in the 80’s, can be recognized from the three aspects: first, their emergence and the posterior spread as a social phenomenon. Second, their propagation in China was rapid unlike their propagation in other East Asia countries at that time. Third, they were exploited for political purposes. However it can’t be denied that the rapid spread of both popularity movements under a political control had some negative effects such as the loss of its academic purity that consequently caused severe impacts for instance the deviation from the academic field where aesthetics had originally been studied or the loss of its academic purpose. Even though the "Aesthetics Popularity" period has come to an end, still the study of aesthetics remains in the state of following or circling around the achievements of previous studies without developing novel theories that may be better than the "Aesthetics Popularity" developed theories in discussion. Hence, in this paper, a critical review on the progress of the "Aesthetic Popularity" process had been attempted, furthermore, a deep analysis and a partial statistical analysis had been performed in order to better understand the ensuing academic situation of the "Aesthetic Popularity". At the same time, this study suggests the necessity to re-evaluate the academic achievement which earlier Chinese aestheticians had built up before the "Aesthetic Popularity" periods. This is due to the fact that the early aestheticians held profound discussions on philosophically leading issues, on how to embrace this new knowledge and how to integrate it with their own knowledge system. Finally few methods that might be helpful to overcome those barriers that the current Chinese aesthetics is facing were presented.
