『東儒學案』으로 본 조선성리학의 전개 (A Deployment of Confucius Studies in Joseon Dynasty Seen Through 『Dongyuhakan』)

초록

1943년에 출간된 하겸진의 『동유학안』은 일제강점기 유일의 ‘學案’식 저술이다. 이 책은 한국의 유학자 152인을 16개의 학안으로 분류하여 상중하 3책 23편에 싣고 있다. 이 책에서 우리가 주목하는 것은 크게 세 부분으로, 형식적 체계와 구성, 학안과 학파의 분류 및 배치, 그리고 수록 인물과 그 평가가 그것이다. 본 연구는 하겸진의 『동유학안』이 보여주고 있는 이 세 가지 측면에 주목해 그 내용을 분석하고 그 특징과 의의를 확인하고 있다.
무엇보다 성리학적 전통을 계승하려는 하겸진의 지향은 형식적 체계와 구성에서부터 분명하게 확인되며, 그것은 학안과 학파의 분류 및 배치, 수록 인물과 그 평가에서도 일관되게 나타난다. 이와 함께 『동유학안』 전체를 관통하고 있는 하나의 특징을 찾는다면, 그것은 다름 아닌 ‘도통론적 시각’이 중심에 자리 잡고 있다는 점이다. 『동유학안』은 철저한 도통론적 토대 위에서 서술된 성리학사였고, 체제나 형식적 측면에서도 ‘도통론적 시각’은 철저하게 관철하고 있다. 또 도통론은 단순히 『동유학안』이 견지하고 있는 시각에 그치지 않고, 조선성리학을 바라보는 시선 자체이기도 했다. 『동유학안』에서 그려지고 있는 조선성리학의 전개사는 곧 도통의 전개사였다. 『동유학안』은 그 자체로 이미 조선성리학의 전개사를 도통론이라는 하나의 시선 속에 일관되게 담아내고 있는 것이다.
하지만 『동유학안』이 일관되게 견지한 도통론적 시각은 동시에 『동유학안』의 피할 수 없는 한계이기도 했다. 그 한계는 도통론 자체가 절대적인 진리를 전제하고 있다는 점에 기인한다. 그런 까닭에 근대적인 학문 방법론과는 가까워질 수 없었고, 당연히 학문적 객관성은 상처를 받을 수밖에 없었다. 이와 같은 약점에도 불구하고 『동유학안』은 한주학파의 끝자락을 장식한 하겸진의 시선을 통해 조선성리학의 전개 과정을 그려볼 수 있는 귀중한 계기를 제공해 주고 있다.

영어초록

『Dongyuhakan』 of Ha Gyeom-jin, published in 1943 was the only ‘Hakan’-style writing from the Japanese Colonial Period. This book is classifying 152 Korean scholars into 16 Hakans, containing them in 3 books of first, second and third and 23 pieces. There are largely three aspects to pay attention in this book for formative system and composition, classification and arrangement of Hakan and academic faction, and the listed personnel and evaluation. This study is to analyze the contents with the attention paid on the three aspects displayed by Ha Gyeom-jin's 『Dongyuhakan』 and confirm its characteristics and implication.
More than anything else, the Ha Gyeom-jin's aim to succeed the Confucius tradition is clearly recognized from its formative system and composition and it is consistently displayed in the classification and arrangement of Hakan and academic faction, as well as the listed persons and evaluation. Along with the foregoing, if there is any characteristic that penetrates entire 『Dongyuhakan』, it would be the point that the ‘authenticity argument view’ is well settled in the middle. 『Dongyuhakan』 was the Neo-Confucianism depicted on the foundation of thorough authenticity argument foundation and the ‘authenticity argument view’ was thoroughly accomplished in the systematic or formative aspect. Also, the argument of authenticity lineage did not stop at the simple view sustained on the 『Dongyuhakan』, but it was the view toward the Joseon Confucianism as well. The development history of the Joseon Confucianism demonstrated in 『Dongyuhakan』 is the development history of authenticity argument 『Dongyuhakan』 is consistently described under a view of argument of authenticity lineage for the development history of the Joseon Confucianism in and itself.
However, the authenticity argument view sustained consistently by 『Dongyuhakan』 was also the limitation unavoidable for 『Dongyuhakan』 at the same time. This limitation is attributable to the fact that the argument of authenticity lineage itself is premised with the absolute truth. For such an attribute, it could not approach to the modern academic methodology and the academic objectivity had to suffer inevitably. Notwithstanding such a weak point, 『Dongyuhakan』 provides a valuable turning point to draw the deployment process of the Joseon Confucianism through the view of Ha Gyeom-jin who decorated the end point of Hanju Academic Faction.
