    초록

    During the Southern Song period, the influential Zen Buddhism Temple was designated as Five mountains and monasteries, However, It is by the end of the Yuan dynasty that the system of Five mountains and monasteries, which led to hierarchization of Zen Buddhism Temple, was clearly established. There is a commonality amongst the East Asian Zen sect in terms of the way in which the system of Five mountains and monasteries was accepted, which can be characterized as the so-called model of “five mountains above(五山之上)”. In this system, Munjong(文宗) of the Yuan dynasty designated Dalongxiangjiqingsi(大龍翔集慶寺) Temple as “five mountains above” and gave the chief monk the right to appoint monks, which gave rise to the establishment its status as a central temple of Zen Buddhism. There are common elements in the East Asian history of Zen Buddhism in that the system of “five mountains above” was introduced by the state with the intention of endowing a new status to a newly built Zen Buddhism temple from the point of the state power.
    Bearing the case of “five mountains above” in mind, King Gongmin ordered the Naong(懶翁) affiliation to lead Zen Buddhism through the reconstruction of Hoeamsa Temple with the aim to strengthen his power. The acceptance of the system of Five mountains and monasteries was closely linked with the evolving institutionalization of Zen such as the acceptance and spread of Gongan chan, the introduction of qinggui(淸規), and the formalization of Zen temple. In order to highlight the status of Hoeamsa Temple, the Naong affiliation actively implemented a series of projects to promote Jigong(指空) and Naong.
    In the late Goryeo and early Joseon Dynasty, Hoeamsa Temple existed as a representative Zen Buddhism temple through the support of the royal family. In addition, the status of Hoeamsa Temple is revealed through the editing and publication of zen texts. The compilation and publication of zen texts in the 14th century were characterized by the prosperity of Gongan chan and the editing and publication of zen texts reflecting the independent perception of Goryeo Zen Buddhism. Hoeamsa Temple existed as a temple with a role and function as the center of Zen Buddhism culture.
