초록

From the prehistoric to modern tirres, the theme rmst mentioned in
mythologies is man followed by animals, plant life and natural
environment surrounding the man. Mythologies need special symbols to
accomplish their given functions and it is in these instances that
animals and plants that can represent the symbols needed by
mythologies naturally appear as characters in the stories enabling the
mythologies to fulfill their functions as intended. Encapsulation of
animals and plants that have close relationships with humans based on
perception from experience and enchanted imagination is a theme that
has been repeated endlessly throughout cultural art from the beginning
of the ages. In view of this, this paper takes a look at the functions
and symbols of animals and plants that appear in the mythologies of
Ieiu Island.
First, they tell stories about the genesis of life and the origins of
both animate and animate things. Second, symbols represented by plant
lifes are intenrediaries between earth and Heaven, life's vitality and
reinvigoration, showing how and why life and death go together, and
manifesting divine rreanings and wishes through flowers that best
express mysteries of the nature. And, third, symbol represented by
animals include divineness, messengers of god, festivity, productivity,
resurrection, and vocation
All subject matters making up mythologies are premised on creation
of symbolic meanings and because of this convey the man's life and
thinkings as an integrated whole. If we sought, we would find infinite
stories of man, nature, and space in mythologies. In this sense, reading
and studying of mythologies make possible a very meaningful study
into an unknown world that is full of symbols and signs.
