    초록

    In this paper I examined Plan B's Space Discovering Project: 112 Sogongdong at Sogongdong in 2010, focusing on the public art's relation to the site. I particularly attended to Walter Benjamin's flâneur who resides precisely in his refusal to become part of the crowd. The flâneur seeks to find collective signals of the past in the visual artifacts of city-like architectures, advertisements, fashions, and all that is on the street. Based on this view, I tried to illuminate how the place's chasm that Henri Lefebvre hoped to find in daily life are tailor shops in 112 Sogongdong.
    Sogongdong has changed from a center of business and politics as well as a passage of introduction of Western culture to the fringes of society for several decades.
    Centuries ago Sogongdong was definitely a powerful engine of growth. Now however, only abandoned old buildings fill the street. Nowadays, this town has been designated as a redevelopment area by the Seoul government. The urban renewal has created a problem; it has eliminated cultural diversity between regions. As a result, we are surrounded by a building estate without a past. So we cannot read the centuries, nor the past, nor what is possible in redevelopment areas. It is a time for city planners to consider the history and culture of the place established by time before redeveloping Sogongdong.
    In order to explore the history and culture of the street, I took a close look at the old and empty buildings. There are the decades-old tailor shops on the first floor. The decades-old tailor shops must be understood in relation to the culture of the late 19th century and the middle 20th century.
    In this context, five artists who joined in this project chose the tailor shops as subject matter. They installed temporary works in this place from 18 June to 17 July in 2010. They tried to attract the attention of viewers or passersby to the tailor shops in two ways: One is to show tailor shops as the city's historical artifacts and the other is to show the daily life established in relation between the city and the people. Therefore the people who viewed the works can consider the custom tailors as an allegory or symbol of 112 Sogondong's history. Their efforts are for proposing a new method to develop links between the area's diversity and the urban redevelopment through public art. Paying attention to the interrelation between space and time, this paper argues that public art which embodied the history and daily life of the place rather than the city government's ideology can unite citizens psychologically in reforming the city.
