초록

그동안 남송대 불전미술 연구는 석가모니의 극히 일부 이야기들만이 표현된 작품을 중심으로 이루어져, 이 시대 불전도상의 전반적 양상은 파악되지 않았다. 이런 상황에서 복건성 천주시 개원사의 남송대 동탑 기단부에 석가모니의 전생, 현생뿐만이 아닌 중국 불교의 역사와 고승 등 다양한 내용으로 구성된 부조가 무려 39장면이나 남아있어 주목된다.
본고는 각 장면의 제목과 도상을 분석해 다음과 같은 내용상의 특징을 밝혔다. 먼저 개원사 동탑 불전부조에는 중국의 불전미술 작품 중 가장 다양한 전생담이 담겼다. 동시에 중국 불전미술 최초로 선어록, 비유담, 지괴소설의 내용이 조각되었다. 또한 이 작품은 중국 불전미술 작품 중 중국 불교의 역사가 표현된 가장 이른 시기의 작품이다.
본고는 불전부조의 제작 시기가 동탑의 건립 시기(1248~1250)와 동일함을 증명하기 위해 불전부조의 석재인 휘록암과 도상의 표현 특징을 살펴보았다. 먼저 문헌을 통해 남송대에 동탑 불전부조의 석재로 청석 즉 오늘날의 휘록암이 사용되었다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 다음으로 불전부조의 복식, 가구, 공수법, 장난감의 표현에서 남송대 문화가 잘 반영되었음을 확인했다.
개원사 불전도상 중 대단히 주목되는 것은 민머리와 복두의를 착용한 석가모니이다. 이 도상들에서 석가모니는 나한을 연상시킨다. 더욱이 일부 장면들은 선사의 말씀을 기록한 선어록으로 이와 같은 사실들은 개원사 불전부조가 선종적 성격을 지녔음을 나타낸다. 또한 입태 장면의 마야부인 도상 역시 주목된다. 이 장면에서 마야부인은 의자에 앉아 있는데 그동안 이런 포즈의 마야부인은 오대 1작품, 청대 2작품 만으로 도상의 연계를 논할 수 없었다. 하지만 개원사 불전부조로 인해 이 문제는 해소되었다. 나아가 이 도상은 조선시대 팔상도 중 입태 장면 속 앉아 있는 마야부인 도상의 연원에 단초를 제공했다.

영어초록

Until now, the study of the story of Buddha’s life from Southern Song dynasty has focused on works in which only a few stories of Shakyamuni had been expressed, and the overall aspect of the iconography of Buddha’s life of this era had not been identified. Given the circumstances, it is noteworthy that there are as many as 39 scenes of reliefs consisting of various contents such as the history and eminent monks of Chinese Buddhism as well as the past and present life of Shakyamuni remain on the base part of the East Pagoda of Southern Song dynasty in Quanzhou, Fujian.
This paper analyzes the title and the iconography of each scene and reveals the following characteristics of the content. First of all, the reliefs on Buddha’s life on the East Pagoda at Kaiyuansi contains the most diverse Jataka tales among depictions of Buddha’s life in China. Also, for the first time in the depictions of Buddha’s life in China, excerpts from the recorded sayings of Seon masters, narrative sermons, and Zhi-guai stories. In addition, this work is the earliest story of Buddha’s life to express the history of Chinese Buddhism.
To demonstrate that the reliefs were produced during the same period as the East Pagoda (1248–1250), this study examines the diabase stone used for the carvings and analyzes the characteristics of the iconography. First, historical records indicate that ‘blue stone,’ known today as diabase, was used in the construction of the East Pagoda during the Southern Song Dynasty. Furthermore, elements of Southern Song culture are evident in the reliefs, particularly in the depiction of clothing, furniture, toys, and the gesture of respectfully clasping both hands together.
A notable characteristic of the reliefs is the depiction of Shakyamuni with his head shaved and wearing Bokduui(a monk’s robe that covers the head). In these iconographies, Shakyamuni is reminiscent of Arhats. Moreover, as noted earlier, some scenes are derived from the records of the sayings of Seon masters. These elements indicate that the reliefs reflect the influence of Seon Buddhism. In addition, the iconography of Queen Maya’s conception also draws attention. In this scene, Maya is sitting on a chair. This particular pose has been difficult to analyze due to the limited number of extant examples, including only one painting from the Five Dynasties and two from the Qing dynasty. The relief at Kaiyuansi provides insight into the development of this iconography. Furthermore, the relief serves as a key reference point for tracing the origins of Maya’s conception in a seated pose seen in Palsangdo paintings of the Joseon Dynasty.
