초록

The population and ethnic changes in Eastern Europe in the 20th century showed enormously complicated phenomena. The magnitude of the political changes during the 20th century in Eastern Europe can be attested by the existence of 19 states and Kaliningrad at present. At the end of the 19th century, Eastern Europe was a very complicated region due to different ethnic nations. 112.7 million people lived in Eastern Europe, which amount a total of 2,090,800㎢. As a result of the end of World War I, the political map of Eastern Europe changed. Approximately 140.1 million people used to live in Eastern Europe at the end of the 1920s. Compared with the population at the end of the 19th century, this is an increase of 28.4 million people. From a demographic viewpoint, World War II has brought basic changes not only in the total population of Eastern Europe but also in regional structure. Following the war, the population of Eastern Europe saw a rapid growth to reach more than 156 million by the end of the 1960s. Between World War I-II and the 1960s Eastern Europe saw a population increase of 15.2 million along with a major change in the ethnic composition. In the last 40 years the population of Eastern Europe has increased by 41.1 million. For almost 100 years Eastern Europe showed an population increase of 84.7 million. Social and demographic changes in Eastern Europe between the late 19th century and the early 21st century were great. During the time, the borderlines changed several times, so it was a period of instability and turbulence. The process of national creation ended with success, whether it was the result of an intentional national movement or an accidental one, and the ideology of national state finally won the victory.
