교과서에 나타난 향가 교육의 문제 - 「서동요」의 ‘借字’와 「찬기파랑가」의 ‘조약돌’을 대상으로 - (Problems in the Education of Hyangga Contained in High School Textbooks:with a special focus on "chaja" in "Seodongyo" and the "pebbles" in "Changiparangga")

초록

본고는 현행 고등학교 교육현장에서 보이는 향가 교육의 오류를 구체적으로 지적하고 이의 개선을 도모하기 위해 집필되었다. 크게 어학적․문학적 부문으로 나누어 고찰했다.
어학적 부문의 경우 향찰이라는 차자표기의 기본 원리에 대한 설명에 큰 오류가 있음을 지적했다. 향찰표기는 원래 ‘正用字[일반한자] + 借用字’로 어절이 구성되며 정용자는 ‘音讀字’와 ‘訓讀字’로 세분되고 차용자는 ‘音借字’와 ‘訓借字’로 세분되는데, 현행 교과서에서는 음독자와 음차자를 동일시하고, 훈독자와 훈차자를 동일시하여 수록함으로써 교사와 학생들에게 큰 혼란을 주고 있음을 지적했다. 또한 이에서 연원하여 ‘음차자’와 ‘훈차자’가 구사되는 문법적 위치 또한 ‘음차자는 語頭에, 훈차자는 語末에 온다’고 제시함으로써 교육현장에서 큰 혼란을 초래하고 있음을 지적했다. 본고는 향찰에 쓰인 字를 ‘정용자 / 차용자’로 대별하고 정용자는 다시 ‘음독자와 훈독자’로, 차용자는 ‘음차자와 훈차자’로 나누는 것이 향찰표기의 기본 원리이고 교육 또한 이에 준해 이루어져야 함을 주장했다.
문학적 부문의 경우 찬기파랑가의 ‘磧惡希[냇가 자갈밭에서]’에 대한 교육이 잘못되었음을 지적했다. 소창진평이 ‘磧’을 ‘냇가 돌무덤’의 의미로 正解한 이래 많은 연구자들이 이에 동조했었는데 교과서에서는 연구현장의 성과를 정당히 반영하지 않고 ‘조약돌’의 의미로 풀이하고 있는 현황을 비판했다. 교과서에서 이를 ‘조약돌’로 풀이한 후, ‘기파랑의 인격’과 관련지어 교육하고 있는데 그렇게 된 연원을 되짚어 이것이 양주동의 설을 誤認하여 생긴 것임을 분명히 하였다. 그 과정에서 ‘磧’의 정확한 의미를 보여주는 여러 자료를 발굴하여 학계에 보고하게 된 것도 하나의 소득이었다.

영어초록

This paper aimed to indicate the misunderstandings of hyangga at the level of secondary education and to present the proper ways of their modification. For this purpose, a bipartite examination was undergone linguistically and literarily.
From the linguistic point of view, I pointed out that the fundamental knowledge of hyangchal, or the authentic writing system of the Silla dynasty, contained serious misunderstandings. Hyangchal is composed of jeongyongja, or the Chinese letters used in their natural meaning, and chayongja, or the letters simply borrowed from Chinese to indicate sounds. Jeongyongja is subdivided into eumdokja and hundokja, while chayongja is grouped into eumchaja and hunchaja. The main problem in understanding these concepts at the level of secondary education is that eumdokja is confused with eumchaja, and hundokja with hunchaja. To make things worse, these misunderstandings caused another confusion about the locations of these subgroups of hyangchal, explained that eumchaja is located at the front of a word, whereas hunchaja at the rear. In this paper, I clarified that hyangchal should be grouped into jeongyongja and chayongja, while jeongyongja is subdivided into eumdokja and hundokja, and chayongja into eumchaja and hunchaja. This should be the fundamental understanding of hyangchal, on which the education at the high school should be based.
With regards to the literary interpretation, I indicated that the explanation of "jeok-ak-hui" has not been correct. 'Jeok' has been translated into "the pile of stones along the river" by many scholars since Okura Sinpei interpreted as such. However, this proper interpretation was not considered in the field of secondary education, and the word "jeok" has been misinterpreted as "pebbles". This confusion resulted in another incorrect metaphoric interpretation, which related the word "jeok" to Giparang's personality. The origin of this rampant misunderstanding can relate back to the distortion of Yang Ju-dong's theory. While I examined this problem, I discovered various materials that presented the exact meaning of "jeok", which was also another fruit of this study.
