초록

본 연구에서는 한국 구전설화 <도통하러 떠난 세 사람>을 대상으로 이야기의 중심 화소인 ‘돌(石)’과 ‘삶다’의 의미를 분석하고 이야기의 주요한 화두인 ‘도통함’의 의미를 밝히는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이 이야기는 일상적인 우리의 삶과 가까운 설정을 취하면서도 득도담의 ‘도통’에 관한 의미가 명확하게 설정되어 있다. 이야기에서 세 남자가 ‘위기 발생’의 순간에서 어떠한 선택을 하느냐가 도통에 성공하느냐, 혹은 실패하느냐로 이야기의 방향을 가르는 변수로 작용한다. 결국 이야기의 결말이 ‘성공/실패’의 양상으로 엇갈리게 되었다는 점을 통해 세 남자가 여자를 대하는 태도와 그 선택이 도통에 ‘성공하느냐, 실패하느냐’를 결정짓고 자신의 욕망을 어떻게 인식하고 받아들이는지가 관건으로 나타난다.
두 남자가 도통에 실패한 원인을 정리하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 도통하고자 하는 주체가 ‘돌 삶기’의 행위를 ‘경쟁’ 혹은 ‘시합’의 의미로 인식하게 되면 도통함에 실패하게 된다. ‘돌 삶기’ 화소는 사람의 자질을 평가하는 시험의 성격을 의미하면서도 절대적으로 그 사람의 물리적인 능력을 판별하는 것이 아니므로 여기서 ‘경쟁’의 마음이 끼어들어 도통에 실패한 것이다. 둘째, 두 남자에게 여성의 개입은 장애물로 작용한다. 설정한 목표를 이루기 위해 중요한 많은 것을 경계하고 멀리하듯이 여자를 멀리하는 것도 두 남자가 넘어가야 할 장애물과 같았다. 이런 두 남자의 모습으로 말미암아 자기 마음을 인정하고 그 마음을 통해 자신을 더욱 발전시켜 나아가는 것이 얼마나 중요한 것인지 알 수 있다. 셋째, 두 남자는 좁은 가마솥 안에서도 자기가 설정한 ‘선(線)’을 깨지 못했다. 여기에서 ‘선’의 의미는 ‘집착과 아집’이라 할 수 있다. 자기중심의 좁은 생각에 집착하여 다른 사람의 의견과 입장을 고려하지 않는 것이다. 또한, 집착과 아집은 딱딱한 돌과 같은 이들의 경직된 자아라 할 수 있다.
다음으로 남자와 여자가 도통할 수 있었던 것을 정리하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 남자는 여자를 따라갔지만 그런데도 자기의 본래 신념을 잊어버리지 않았다. 초세속을 지향하는 마음가짐은 흐트러지지도 여자가 걸림돌이 되지도 않았다. 이러한 점을 통해 남자는 ‘유연한 자아’를 가진, 융통성이 있는 사람이라는 것을 확인하였다. 둘째, 남자는 ‘딱딱한 돌’의 노예가 되는 것이 아닌, 두 남자와 달리 모든 것을 구분 짓는 ‘선(線)’에 대하여 그 어떤 경계도 짓지 않았다. 즉 이야기에서 딱딱한 돌에 물리적인 힘을 가하여 돌의 모양과 속성을 변하게 한다는 것은 바로 인간 존재의 변화를 의미하는, ‘존재의 초월(超越)’과 맞닿아 있다는 점을 확인하였다.
결국, 이 이야기에서는 선(線)을 뛰어넘을 수 있는 사람이 삶에서 초월을 실현하는 존재로서 신선이 된다는 도가적인 의미를 구현하면서도 이러한 의미에는 자연과 세상의 이치가 고스란히 담겨 있다. 따라서 초월적 존재로 변모하기 위해서는 자신의 신분과 상황, 그리고 처지를 뛰어넘어 관계와 존재의 구분과 경계를 짓지 않는 것이 핵심이 되었다. 이에 따라 이야기에서 ‘합심’의 진정한 의미는 ‘선’을 초월하는 것, 즉 경계가 없다는 것에 있다.

영어초록

This study analyzes the meanings of “stone” and “boil” in the term “boil stone” the central element and primary topic of the story by examining the traditional Korean folktale “Three People who Went to Spiritual Enlightenment.” This story closely focuses on the daily lives of the characters, and clearly denotes the meaning of spiritual enlightenment. In this story, the choices of three men at the outset of a crisis serves as an element that determines the story direction based on their subsequent success or failure. In the end, the ending of the story is divided into a “success/failure” aspect, and the key point is how the three men’s attitude toward women determines “success or failure” of spiritual enlightenment and how they perceive and accept their desires.
If the cause of the failure of the two men’s spiritual enlightenment is sorted out, first, if the subject who wants to do so recognizes the act of “boiling a stone” as the meaning of “competition” or “match”, the spiritual enlightenment fails. The “boiling stone” motif means the nature of a test that evaluates a person’s qualities, but it does not determine a person’s physical ability absolutely, so if the mind of “competition” intervenes here, it fails spiritual enlightenment. Second, women’s involvement in two men acts as an obstacle. Staying away from women was like an obstacle for two men to cross, just as they were wary of and distancing from many important things to achieve their goals. These two men show how important it is to acknowledge one’s heart and develop oneself further through it. Third, the two men could not break each other's “line,” even in a narrow cauldron. The meaning of their “line” can be deemed “obsession and ego.” They are obsessed with narrow self-centered thoughts and do not consider the opinions and positions of other people. In addition, obsession and ego represents their rigid selves that are akin to hard stones.
The actions that men and women can do are summarized as follows. First, the man followed the woman, but he did not forget about his original convictions. Therefore, his mindset regarding super-secularity was neither distracted, nor did the woman become an obstacle for him. This confirms that a man represents a flexible ego and person. Second, the man did not become a slave to a hard stone, and unlike the other two men, he did not set any boundaries regarding the “line” that separates everything. In other words, the story confirmed that the physical force applied to the hard stone to change the shape and properties of the stone is directly related to the “transcendence of existence”, meaning a change in human existence.
In the end, this story embodies Taoism’s meaning that a person who can cross the line becomes a visionary as a person who realizes transcendence in life, hence it contains the full reason of nature and the world. Thus, the transformation of existence is beyond status, situation, and self-determination, and there is no distinction between the boundaries of relationships and existence. Also, in this story, the true meaning of “united mind” lies in transcending “line” there is no boundary.
