그랜드호텔 형식 영화의 유형별 고찰 - <12인의 성난 사람들>, <포세이돈 어드벤쳐>, <바비>의 대비를 중심으로 (A Study on Types of the Grand Hotel Style Film - Focusing on the Contrast between 12 Angry Men and The Poseidon Adventure and Bobby)

초록

본고에서는 일정한 공간에 갇힌 인간군상의 심리추이를 통해 다양한 인간존재방식을 시사하는 그랜드호텔 형식 영화의 연원과 개념을 살펴본 뒤, 그 환경론적 발생요인에 따라 여러 층위로 범주화되는 그랜드호텔 형식 영화의 유형별 특색을 살펴봄으로써 그 외연을 확장하고 세부적 변별성을 확인해 보고자 하였다.
한정된 공간 속 인물들의 심리추이와 그 동향을 추적하여 인간성 탐구로 나아가는 그랜드호텔 형식 영화는 바이마르시대의 독일 여류작가 비키 바움의 소설 <호텔 사람들>을 영화화한 할리우드 영화 <그랜드 호텔>에서 연원한다. 본고에서는 영화 속 공간을 창출하게 된 환경론적 발생요인에 따라 그랜드호텔 형식 영화의 범주를 3분하여 각 양식별 특성을고찰하였다. 법정극 형식의 <12인의 성난 사람들>에는 1950년대 미국인의 시민정신과 인간의 본질적 성정을 축약한 온갖정서가 갇힌 공간의 심리적 추동과 맞물려 용광로처럼 분출하고 있다. 그리하여 배심원실의 닫힌 공간 속에서 시간별 인물의 심리적 추이를 화면 속에 인상적으로 담아냄으로써 고정관념의 감성에 젖은 인간의 논리적 이성화 과정을 그린다.
재난극 형식의 <포세이돈 어드벤쳐>는 조난선의 재난현장을 배경으로 요나 콤플렉스의 덫에 갇혀 움츠리던 인물들이 한인간의 예지와 용기에 의해 죽음에서 벗어나는 경로를 추적하는 인간 승리의 과정을 추적하고 있다. 그리하여 조난자 상호간의 갈등을 거대한 조난선 내부의 한정된 공간 속에서 숨 가쁘게 재현함으로써 극한 상황 속 인간의 공리적 일체화과정을 그린다. 세태극 형식의 <바비>는 1968년 로버트 케네디 민주당 대선후보의 저격 당일의 현장을 공유한 “다양한인물의 적층적 스토리를 통해 1968년의 세태상”을 적나라하게 전달하고 있다. 등장인물들의 살아온 이력을 통해 “그 어느 때보다 정치적 감수성이 예민했던 1968년 당시, 미국시민의 집단적 초상화”를 공간집약적 상황 속에서 연출해낸다.
그리하여 그 공간에 흐르는 시대적 고민의 일상적 균질화를 토로한다.
이를 통해 볼 때, 그간 단순히 ‘공간이 고정된 인간군상극’ 정도로 막연히 인식되어 온 그랜드호텔 형식 영화는 그 공간 창출의 환경론적 발생요인에 따라 다양한 하위 장르로 범주화되어짐을 확인할 수 있었다.

영어초록

In this paper, we wanted to expand the appearance and check the detailed discrimination by looking at the characteristics of Grand Hotel-style films categorized into different levels according to environmental factors that led to the characters sharing space this paper.
The Grand Hotel-style film, which tracks the psychological trends and trends of characters in limited space and moves toward humanity, is originated in the Hollywood film Grand Hotel, a film adaptation of German female writer Vicky Baum’s novel Hotel People during the Weimar era. In this study, we consider the characteristics of each style by dividing the categories of Grand Hotel-style movies into four categories according to the environmental factors that led to the creation of space in the film. 12 Angry Men in the form of a legal drama is erupting like a melting pot in conjunction with the psychological drive of the trapped space, which condensed the American citizenship and human essentiality in the 1950s. Thus, it depicts the logical rationalization process of humans soaked in stereotypes by impressively capturing the psychological trends of time figures in the closed space of the jury room. The Poseidon Adventure, in the form of a disaster drama, traces the process of human victory in tracking the path of the characters cringing in the trap of Jonah Complex to escape death by the foresight and courage of a human being. Thus, the process of utilitarian integration of humans in extreme situations is depicted by reproducing the conflict between the survivors breathlessly in a limited space inside the huge ship. Bobby, in the form of a timeline-drama, delivers the 1968 World Award through the additive stories of various characters, which shared the scene of the 1968 shooting of Democratic presidential candidate Robert Kennedy. Through the characters’ living histories, “the collective portrait of American citizens in 1968, when political sensibility was more sensitive than ever,” is produced in a space-intensive situation. Thus, it expresses the daily homogenization of the contemporary concerns flowing into the space.
Through this, it was confirmed that Grand Hotel-style films, which track psychological trends in closed spaces and execute human exploration, have various patterns depending on environmental factors of space creation.
