Don DeLillo's Falling Man traces how the terrorists' attack on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001 has changed Keith and his family afterwards. The title, 'Falling Man', is named after a performance artist who unexpectedly jumps from high buildings around New York city. It reminds people of the horrible 9/11 traumatic event where many people trapped in the Twin Towers were forced to fall from high windows. At the same time, 'Falling Man' symbolizes survivors like Keith who cannot but compulsively repeat the traumatic experiences and who remains still in the course of falling. Keith is isolated from the world and has no interest in the outside world. Finally he indulges himself in the poker game, through which he only acts out the traumatic experience.
On the other hand, his wife Lianne becomes vicariously traumatized by seeing the survival of Keith from Ground Zero and by being exposed to terrible scenes relayed by TV. While Keith appears to be in emotional numbing, Lianne responds hypersensitively to the event by looking for the signs of past and future terror. She gradually works through the trauma after seeing the performance of 'Falling Man'. Falling Man's performance testifies the falling men that day. That is, he transmits the knowledge of the falling men who disappeared by the half-imposed and self-imposed restriction not to circulate the horrible image. He asks the spectators to bear witness to and take a ethical responsibility to falling men. After seeing the second performance, Lianne privately associates her husband's friend who died on 9/11 with the falling men and tries to reconstruct the symbolic cracked by the event to make various voices be heard.
