국립민속박물관 소장 보물 <신․구법천문도(新舊法天文圖)>의 원(原) 병풍 장황(粧䌙) 연구 (A Study on the Original Mounting of the Folding Screen the Astronomical Chart Showing both the Traditional Joseon and Western Styles stored in the National Folk Museum)

초록

본 연구는 8점의 낱폭 상태였던 국립민속박물관 소장 보물 <신․구법천문도(新舊法天文圖)>를 병풍으로 복원한 근거에 대해 담고 있다. 보물로 지정되기 1년 전인 2000년에 보존처리를 진행한 바가 있으나, 당시에는 병풍의 원형을 알 수 없어 손상부만을 처리하고 낱폭으로 보존처리를 완료했다. 하지만 전시 과정에서 낱폭 상태로 전시하는 것에 대한 문제점이 발생해 병풍으로의 장황 복원이 시급했다.
여러 해에 걸쳐 ‘신․구법천문도’의 또 다른 작례를 조사했고, 총 9건의 ‘신․구법천문도’가 현존하고 있음을 확인했다. 분석 가능한 6건에 대해 채색 재료 성분 및 도상 등의 과학적인 분석을 실시하여 국립민속박물관 소장 보물 <신․구법천문도>와 동시대에 제작한 것으로 추정하는 천문도를 분류해 내었다. 6건 중 시기가 가장 앞선 것은 한국의 국립민속박물관 보물본과 영국의 휘플과학사박물관본이었는데, 그 제작 시기는 18세기 중엽 이후로 추정한다. 반면 일본 국립국회도서관본, 국립중앙박물관본 2건(본관 10968, 덕수 1218), 그리고 또 다른 국립민속박물관본(민속 70195)에서는 19세기 중엽 이후 유럽에서 유입된 합성 무기안료인 양록(洋綠, 에메랄드 그린)과 양청(洋靑, 울트라마린 블루)이 확인되어 앞의 2건과는 시기적으로 차이를 보인다.
국립민속박물관 소장 보물 <신․구법천문도>는 입수 당시 그림 뒤에 붙어있던 ‘구 병풍 속틀지’로 병풍 1폭의 크기 및 구조를 추산했고, 남아 있던 병풍띠[回粧]와 병풍의(屛風衣)를 과학적으로 성분 분석하여 이를 장황 복원에 적용했다. 동시대 ‘신․구법천문도’ 중에는 하회장[下縇]의 정보를 얻을 수 없어 시기적으로는 차이가 있으나 원(原) 장황 형태를 유지하고 있던 국립중앙박물관본(덕수 1218)을 참고하여 쪽염 비단으로 병풍 장황을 설계했다.
설계된 내용을 바탕으로 2023년에 보존처리 및 장황을 복원해 현재 병풍 복원이 완료된 상태이다. 이 논문은 현재까지 조사한 ‘신․구법천문도’의 과학적 분석을 기반한 결과물로, 천문 관련 민속자료를 연구하거나 추후 유사 ‘신․구법천문도’의 병풍 장황을 복원하는 데에 도움이 되길 바란다.

영어초록

This study is about the basis for restoring the folding screen the Astronomical Chart Showing both the Traditional Joseon and Western Styles, a treasure held by the National Folk Museum of Korea, which consisted of eight individual pieces. Conservation treatment was conducted in 2000, a year before it was designated as a treasure, but since the original shape of the folding screen was unknown at that time, only the damaged parts were treated and conserved separately. However, during the exhibition, issues arose during exhibition due to the display of the panels as individual pieces, making the restoration of the screen mounting a priority.
Over several years, we researched other examples of the astronomical chart showing both the traditional Joseon and western styles, and found a total of nine cases existed. We conducted a scientific analysis of the coloring material composition and iconography of the six cases, and found a case that is believed to have been produced at the same time as the treasures the Astronomical Chart Showing both the Traditional Joseon and Western Styles owned by the National Folk Museum of Korea. The oldest versions of the six cases are the Astronomical Chart Showing both the Traditional Joseon and Western Styles (Treasure) owned by the National Folk Museum of Korea and the edition in Whipple Museum of History of Science. The production time is estimated to be after the mid-18th century. However, in the edition in The National Library of the National Assembly of Japan, two editions in the National Museum of Korea(Bonguan 10968, Deoksu 1218), and another edition in National Folk Museum of Korea(Minsok 70195), emerald green and ultramarine blue introduced from Europe after the mid-19th century were detected in the painting, showing a temporal difference from the previous two cases.
The size and structure of original folding screen were estimated through the folding screen’s inner frame paper attached to the back of the original edition of the Astronomical Chart Showing both the Traditional Joseon and Western Styles owned by the National Folk Museum of Korea. In addition, in terms of materials, the materials of the folding bordering(回粧) and folding screen robe(屛風衣) were identified through scientific composition analysis and applied to the restoration. Since it was not possible to obtain contemporary information, the restoration of trimmings in the bottom(下繪粧) was designed using indigo dye silk by referring to the National Museum of Korea's edition(Deoksu 1218), which maintained its original mounting form despite the differences in time.
Based on the design, conservation treatment and restoration of the folding screen were carried out in 2023. This study identified the time and materials of the astronomical chart showing both the traditional Joseon and western styles through scientific analysis. We hope that this will be helpful in researching relics related to astronomy in the future or restoring folding screens of the astronomical chart showing both the traditional Joseon and western styles of similar times.
