제주도 효제문자도 연구 (A Study of Hyojemunjado of Jeju Island)

초록

지역의 풍토색은 지역의 생산력과 결합하여 다양한 기층문화로 나타난다. 그 문화는 다시 인간에 의해서 생산되고 향유되며 문화이데올로기화 된다. 제주도(濟州島) 효제문자도(孝悌文字圖)는 이런 풍토적인 문화를 잘 반영한 기층문화의 성과라 할 수 있다.
조선시대 주류 문화 중 하나였던 효제문자도는 유교의 덕목을 도상화(圖像化)하여 일상 속에서 조선 왕조의 국가이데올로기를 구현하고자 했던 교훈적인 그림 병풍이었다. 양반과 서민을 막론하고 병풍은 바람막이용과 장식용, 관혼상제에 필수적으로 사용되는 중요한 의례용 기물이었다. 원래 조선의 통치 이데올로기의 교화적인 수단으로 발흥하여 민중들의 멋과 풍류를 담아냈던 효제문자도는 오늘날 ‘민화’라는 전통회화의 한 형식으로만 남겨졌다.
제주도 효제문자도는 육지의 어느 지역보다도 독창적인 형식을 남겼다. 제주도 효제문자도는 조선의 영향권 아래 있었음에도 불구하고 양식적인 면과 구성 방식, 색채 면에서 육지의 효제도문자도와 전혀 다른 제주인의 미의식을 창출해내고 있다. 놀라운 것은 중국 본토나 베트남의 문자도 형식을 제주도 효제문자도에서 찾아볼 수 있다는 것이다. 이는 서로의 지역이 물길이 닿을 수 있는 표착지였다는 사실과 무관하지 않을 것이다.
한라산의 풍부한 식생과 제주의 독특한 자연환경은 도상에도 영향을 끼쳤다. 갖가지 수목과 화초, 철새, 토착 조류 등 다양한 자연 대상물들에 대한 기억과 상상력을 동원해 현실과는 다른 독창적인 이미지들을 만들어 냈다. 여기에서 제주도 효제문자도의 현대성을 엿볼 수 있다. 추상적인 형태와 기하학적인 문양, 생략된 도상, 세련될 만큼 깔끔한 색 처리 등 현대의 디자인적인 요소를 창출해내고 있다. 이것이 바로 육지의 효제문자도의 내용과 형식을 빗겨간 제주도 효제문자도의 특징이라고 할 수 있다.
단아한 색과 절제된 표현, 수채화처럼 맑은 분위기는 바로 ‘재료가 너무 귀한 나머지 아끼고 아낀 흔적의 결과’라고 결론지을 수 있다. 비·바람에 대처하기 위해 낮게 지어진 집의 크기에 알맞게 병풍의 크기 또한 여백 없이 바로 그림이 끝나는 지점에서 표구를 마감해야 했기 때문에 그 높이가 낮아졌다고 볼 수 있다.

영어초록

The climate of a region influences its grass-roots culture as reflected, ultimately, in the capacity for production of the region. The culture is recreated, enjoyed, and exercised by the people in the region before it finally becomes a cultural ideology. Hyojemunjado (孝悌文字圖) – Ethics Character Picture – is a product of the grass-roots culture while reflecting the underlying foundation of the indigenous culture.


As a part of the mainstream culture from the Joseon Dynasty, Hyojemunjado, was the educational means to establish a governing ideology to keep the reign of the monarchy. The Confucian virtues found in everyday life were expressed in graphic imagery and painted on afolding screen, Hyojemunjado. Regardless of the lifestyle, whether it is of the aristocrat or the commoner, a folding screen was an important household possession providing multiple functions as a windbreak, decorative furniture or a necessity item for the ritual and ceremonial events from wedding to funeral. Despite its educational origin, Hyojemunjado culture flourished and became a popular medium to portraythe charms and romanticism of the populace. But today, Hyojemunjado survives only as a genre of Korean traditional arts called Minhwa, meaning folk painting.


Hyojemunjado of Jeju Island has left a legacy of a very distinctive style in contrast to those native to other areas of Korea. Although the Jeju style was also under the influence of the same force as on the mainland, itsstyle, composition, and colors are completely different from the ones that can be seen in other areas, manifesting the distinguished aestheticism of the Jeju people. A further surprise is that the styles of mainland China or Vietnamcan also be found in the Hyojemunjado character pictures of Jeju. This should not be irrelevant to the fact that these areas are located within regions easily accessed by water travel.


The rich vegetation of Mt. Hallasan,and the unique natural environment of Jeju, also influenced the process of graphic imagery. The images, unique but different from the realistic ones, were created by mobilizing the imaginary power and the stored memories of various natural objects from trees and shrubs, flowering plants, and migratory or endemicbirds. This renders an opportunity to look at the modernity embedded in Jeju’s Hyojemunjado character paintings. They contain the elements of modern designs such as the abstract feature, geometric pattern, omittedgraphic imagery, and stylish and neat coloring. Such characteristics are the uniqueness of Jeju’s Hyojemunjado paintings, as they vary from the contents and the format accommodated in the classic Hyojemunjado styles of Korea’s mainland.


Elegant colors expressed in a temperate touch, and the lucid mood of a water painting, can be concluded to be evidence of the painter’s efforts to conserve the valuable painting materials as they were very difficult to procure. In Jeju Hyojemunjado, the mounting of the screens starts right from the edge of the character pictures making the height of the screens relatively lower than those from other areas. It is because the screens had to be made to be fitted in the low ceiling of Jeju’s traditional houses as they were designed to cope with the wind and rain.
