이황 철학의 리 이론에 대한 비판적 접근- 리발, 리동, 리도설을 중심으로 - (A Critical Study about a Theory of Li(理) in Yi Hwang’s Philosophy - Focusing on the Theory of Libal(理發), Lidong(理動), Lido(理到) -)

초록

본 연구의 목적은 이황 철학의 리 이론에 대해 비판적으로 검토함으로써 이황의 철학을 어떻게 해석하는 것이 좀 더 적절한 것인지에 대해 검토하고자 하는 것이다. 이황 철학의 정체성에 대한 규정은 매우 다양하다. 이이가 이황의 철학은 리의 능동성을 주장한 이론이기 때문에 주희의 리 무위설과 다른 이론이라고 주장한 이래, 이이의 후학들은 모두 이이의 견해를 이어 받아 이황을 리의 능동성을 주장한 사상가로 평가한다. 한편, 이이 및 이이 후학들의 이와 같은 평가가 있은 후에, 이황의 후학들은 스승 이황의 철학에 대한 이이의 평가가 적절하지 않은 것이라고 반론을 펼치면서, 이황이 주장한 ‘리발설’(理發說)을 비롯하여‘리생기설’(理生氣說), ‘리동설’(理動說), ‘리도설’(理到說) 등이야 말로 주희의 이론에 근거한 이론이라고 주장한다. 이황 철학에 대한 다양하고도 상반된 평가는 이이 이후 오늘날까지 약 400여 년 동안 지속되고있다. 거대한 사상가가 펼친 이론에 대한 평가와 규정이 이처럼 다양한것은 매우 자연스럽지만, 다른 한편으로 이황 철학에 대한 평가와 규정을 하나의 견해로 수렴하는 방법이 있고, 그러한 것이 가능하다고 한다면 그러한 방법을 모색해보는 것도 의미 있는 작업이라고 생각한다. 그래서 필자는 본고에서 이와 같은 방법을 모색하고자 한다.
이와 같은 길을 모색하기 위해 필자는 먼저, 이황 철학에 대한 연구자들의 연구방법에 대해 의문을 가져보았다. 여기서 우리는 이황 철학의 연구자들이 이황의 철학을 평가하고 규정할 때 그들이 가졌던 공통점을 발견할 수 있었다. 이이 이래 수많은 학자들이 이황 철학의 정체성을 해명하기 위해 사용한 방법이 바로 ‘리의 능동성 여부’를 기준으로 놓고 그 철학의 성격을 규명하고자 했다는 것이다.
이러한 이유에서, 본고에서는 일반적으로 이황 철학의 정체성을 리의 능동성 여부에 초점을 맞추어 규명하려는 시도에 대해 비판적으로 고찰하고자 한다. 다시 말해, 리의 능동성 여부에 초점을 맞추어 전체적인 측면에서 이황의 리 이론을 분석하기보다는 이황의 리 이론을 주제에 따라 ‘심성론’, ‘우주론’, ‘인식론’으로 분류한 후, 각각의 영역에서 리의 능동성과 관련된 표현(‘理發’, ‘理生氣’, ‘理動’, ‘理到’)과 이론이 어떤 의미를 지고 있는지에 대해 재검토하고자 한다. 만약 이러한 작업이 제대로 진행된다면 이황 철학의 정체성이 보다 온전히 규명될 수 있을 것이며, 이와 함께 이황 철학이 갖고 있는 독창성 역시 밝혀질 것으로 기대할 수 있다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to clarify the identity of Yi Hwang(李滉)’s philosophy, especially the theory of Li(理). Considering Yi Hwang’s status in Korea Neo-Confucianism, the study about the identity of Yi Hwang’s philosophy is very important because it is closely connected with the identity of Korea Neo-Confucianism. But It is very difficult to clarify what the identity of Yi Hwang’s philosophy is. So the interpretation about Yi Hwang’s theory of Li could not reach agreement.
There are two historical stances that have evaluated Yi Hwang’s philosophy. One thing is that ‘Yi Hwang’s philosophy is different from Chu Hsi’s Philosophy’, the other is that ‘Yi Hwang’s philosophy have inherited Chu Hsi’s Philosophy intactly’. That is, two stances are evaluations of ‘sameness’ and ‘difference’. Here, the point is to understand Li, which is the core concept of Chu Hsi’s Philosophy. The evaluation of ‘different’ came from Yi I(李珥) and his successors, since Yi I criticized that Libalsul(理發說) is the theory that insists there is activity of Li’, and his successors criticized even Lidongsul(理動說) and Lidosul(理到說). The other side, the evaluation of ‘sameness’ came from Yi Hwang’s successors who would defend Yi Hwang from that critique. Two different schools have debated about the activity of Li for a long time, but they have not agreed each other. To this days, the dispute continues. On the one hand, the modern scholars who support Yi I’ point of view evaluate that the insistence there is activity is the creativity of Yi Hwang’s theory. The other hand, the modern scholars who want to defend Yi Hwang evaluate that his Libalsul is not different entirely from Chu Hsi’s Philosophy.
After all, the key point is ‘activity of Li’. Namely, it is whether we can regard the theory of Libal(理發), Lidong(理動), Lido(理到) as insisting the activity of Li, or not although the theory is seen to that way superficially. However, here the author has a question. If ‘the frame of Li’s activity’ is the proper key point to clarify the identity of Yi Hwang’s philosophy, why many scholars do not still agree about the identity of Yi Hwang’s philosophy? Do they not agree because the key point that Yi I discovered is not enough? This study will critically try to review stances that generally evaluate identity of Yi Hwang’s philosophy is creative or just follow Chu Hsi’s Philosophy, focusing attention on ‘activity of Li’. Existing disputes concentrated Yi Hwang’s theory of Libal, and in some cases, they evaluated it ambiguously without separating the theory of Libal from the theory of Lidong and Lido. But as the theory about ‘the theory of Mind and Nature Yi Hwang’, the theory of Libal is different from theory of Lidong and Lido. The theory of Lidong is related with Cosmology of Yi Hwang, and the theory of Lido is related with Epistemology of Yi Hwang. So, to clarify the identity of Yi Hwang’s philosophy, we need to distinguish the theory of Libal, Lidong, Lido separately.
For these reasons, first, this study distinguishes the theory of Mind and Nature, Cosmology, Epistemology in Yi Hwang’s philosophy separately. And it analyzes in what context the theory of Libal, Lidong, Lido appear, what appearances of these theories mean, what their ends are, and what Yi Hwang intended to get through the expression of Libal, Lidong, Lido. In this way, we will approach the identity of Yi Hwang’s philosophy. In this study, we will clarify that the theory of Libal came from the process of justifying ‘the theory of two nature and two emotions’(二性二情論), that the theory of Lidong was the theory to justify the fundamental and absolute character of Li on ‘one Li’(一理), and that the theory of ‘Lido’ was presented to justify Epistemology of the inter communication of subject and object.
