마왕퇴백서 『역전』의 도기론(道器論) 연구 (A Study on the View of Dao(道) and Qi(器) in the Mawangdui Silk Manuscripts of the Yizhuan)

초록

이 논문은 백서 『역전』의 ‘도기론(道器論)’을 전국시대 후기의 사상사 속에서 분석하여 유가가 『역』을 경전으로 도입한 이유와 과정을 밝힌 것이다. 백서 『역전』, 「계사」에는 형이상학적 토대가 없던 유가가 도가의 사유를 재해석해서 만들어낸 형이상의 도(道)와 형이하의 기(器)에 관한 새로운 이론이 보인다. 이 형이상의 도는 말로도 글로도 전달할 길이 없지만, 『주역』의 성인은 형이상의 도를 깨닫고 상(象)과 괘(卦)와 사(辭, 괘효사)라는 형이하의 기를 가지고 사람들에게 전달한다. 뿐만 아니라 그 성인은 신물(神物)을 매개로 신명(神明)과 통하여 천지자연의 조화에 관여하는 자이기도 하다.
이것은 무위를 통해 도를 깨닫고 무위를 통해 도를 전달하는 도가의 성인과 동일한 논리구조를 가지지만 ‘무위’의 자리에 ‘형이하의 기’ 즉 상, 괘, 사를 넣고 있는 점에서 차이가 있다. 즉 유가 사상가들이 도가의 논리를 수용하면서도 ‘무위’라는 수동적 행위를 거부하고 유가적 특성을 반영하여 도가 사상을 극복하고자 한 시도였다. 전국시대 후기에 이르러 도가의 형이상학이 현실 정치에서 강력한 힘을 발휘하기 시작하자 유가 사상가들은 위기감 속에서 도가 이론을 극복하고자 하였다. 점술서였던 『역』에 눈을 돌린 것은 바로 그 이유였다. 다만 백서 『역전』, 「목화(繆和)」에 보이는 설화를 통해 백서 『역전』 속에는 형이상학적인 도 개념과 함께 기존 유가가 가지고 있던 자연의 도리라는 의미에서의 도 개념 역시 포함되어 있다는 것 또한 확인할 수 있다.

영어초록

This paper attempts to reveal concretely in the history of thought the formation of the Yizhuan易傳between the late Warring States period and the early Han period by examining the discourses on the Dao(道)and the qi(器) in the silk manuscript of the Yizhuan which was discovered at the Mawangdui馬王堆 site from the Han period.
The silk manuscript of the Yizhuan vividly shows the Zhouyi’s transformation from a divination text to a philosophy book. Therefore, its proper reading should be done within the context of the stream of the history of thought. The purpose of this paper lies in the examination of the view on the Dao and the qi in the Yizhuan silk text in the history of thought.
In the silk text “Xici,”(繫辭) Confucius raises a question as to writings and words, and then he himself says in answer that the sage can convey what he means with “images”(象), “hexagrams”(卦), and “statements”(辭). In short, because what the sage meant could not be conveyed by writings or words, he himself produced “images,” “hexagrams,” and “statements” and conveyed his ideas.
Therefore, the excerpt shows that the Confucian sages who practice ceremonies and rituals are superior to the Daoist sages who practice the “teaching without words.” Also the last sentence, “黙而成之, 不言而信, 存乎德行” (to accomplish things while remaining silent and to be trusted without speaking is something intrinsic to virtuous conduct), attests to it. In other words, the Daoist concept of “non-action” (黙而成之, 不言而信) is encompassed in the Confucian concept of action (德行). Now, we can understand that the thesis that “the metaphysical is the Dao and the physical is the qi” was conceived in its theoretical struggle with Daoism.
Yet in the silk text “Xici,” the sages are in contact with the metaphysical Dao only through Confucian rituals and do not transmit it to others. It states that they communicate with the shenming(神明), or spiritual brightness, through the mediation of spiritual or numinous things and intervene in the harmony of Heaven, Earth and nature.
Xunzi produced the idea of “通於神明, 參於天地” (communicating with the spiritual brightness and engaging with Heaven and Earth) by absorbing those of other theorists and producing his own from it. Therefore, it is believed that, roughly from the time of Xunzi, Confucian thought began to use the concepts of shenming and “spirits” which transcend cognition. And it became further developed into the thought of the Yizhuan.
