초록

이 논문은 서울 수국사 왕실발원 <삼불괘불도> 수화승 ‘철유’ 의 생애와 유파 관계를 통해화풍을 알아보고 도상과 양식 특징을 파악함으로써 창의적인 기법과 새로운 불화 양식을 시도한 ‘철유’ 의 뛰어난 예술성을 조명해보고 수국사 <삼불괘불도>의 불교미술사적 위치를 규명해보는 글이다.
수국사는 왕실의 원찰로서 수준 높은 불화들이 많이 조성되었다. 이 가운데 1908 년에 조성된 <삼불괘불도>는 특이한 도상의 구성과 19 세기 후반기부터 20 세기 초반에 걸쳐 서울·경기 지역은 물론 전국에 걸쳐 매우 뛰어난 활동을 보이는 석옹당 철유(石翁堂 喆侑)가 출초(出草)와 감동겸 도편수(監董兼都片手)를 맡고 있어 주목된다. 한국 근대기 최고의 화승이라고도 말 할 수 있는 ‘철유’ 는 다양한 주제의 화적을 남기고 있으며, 여러 화승들과의 관계를 통해 기법의 다양성을 추구하고 있음을 살펴볼 수 있다. 특히 전통성을 유지한 도상의 변용과 독특한 양식을 추구한 서양화적 기법 등 예술성과 창의성이 돋보이는 불화를 조성함으로써 불교회화사적 의의를 새롭게 마련하고 있다.
이처럼 ‘철유’ 의 뛰어난 기량으로 조성된 수국사 <삼불괘불도>는 석가불·약사불·아미타불로 구성된 석가삼세불도 형식에 약사불을 제외하고 노사나불이 구성된 매우 특이한 삼신삼세불 형식으로 한국의 불화 가운데 유일무이한 도상으로 불교미술사적 의미가 매우 크다고 하겠다. 그리고 과하지 않은 서양화 기법의 음영 표현과 밝고 명쾌한 색채의 구성, 광배의 묘사방법과 영락장신구의 장엄 등은 ‘철유’ 만이 갖고 있는 독창적인 감각으로 이루어낸 성과이다.
이렇게 창의적인 도상과 새로운 불화 양식의 시도를 살펴볼 수 있는 수국사 왕실발원 <삼불괘불도>는 뛰어난 예술성을 펼쳐 낸 한국 근대 불화의 큰 맥을 형성했다고 할 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

This study attempts to and examine the outstanding artistry of 'Cheol‐yu', who tried creative techniques and new styles of Buddhist paintings, and to identify the Buddhist historical position of the <Three Buddhas Banner Painting> at Suguk temple by illuminating the iconography and stylistic characteristics through a leading monk painter Cheol‐yu’s life and his sector relations for the <Three Buddhas Banner Painting> promoted by the Royal Family at Suguk temple in Seoul.
Suguk temple, the main temple of the royal family has many high‐quality Buddhist paintings. Among them, the Three Buddhas Banner Painting, which was created in 1908, is composed of a unique iconography, for which Seokongdang Cheol‐yu(石翁堂 喆侑) very active in Seoul and Gyeonggi area as well as throughout the country was appointed as Chulcho (出草) and Gamdonggyeom Dopyeonsu(監董兼都片手) from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. Cheol‐yu, who can be said to be one of the best monk painters in the Korean modern period, leaves painting records with various subjects, and it can be seen that he pursues diversity of techniques through the relationship with various monk painters. Especially, by creating Buddhist paintings that show artistry and creativity, such as transformation of iconography maintaining traditionality and Western painting technique that pursues unique style, he newly prepared a Buddhist painting historic meaning.
As such, the <Three Buddhas Banner Painting> at Suguk temple which was created with the outstanding skills of 'Cheol‐yu', is a very unusual form of Trikaya and Three World Buddhas, comprising Locana, that is, the only one of a kind iconography of Buddhist paintings, which is very meaningful in the Korean Buddhist art history, excluding the Bodihisattva from the form of Three World Buddhas Painting comprising Sakyamuni- Bodihisattva-Amitabha. The shadow expression, not excessive, of the Western painting technique, the composition of bright and cleIt can be said that the "Three Buddhas Banner Painting", where a creative iconography and an attempt at new Buddhist paintings are found, formed the big vein of Korean modern Buddhist paintings that unveiled excelar colors, and the method of describing the halo and the magnificence of Yongrak ornaments are accomplished by the unique sense of 'Cheol‐yu' alone.lent artistry.
