설학(雪壑) 이대기(李大期)의 유배와 「백령도지(白翎島誌)」 (A Study on the Exile of Seolhak Lee Dae-gi and Baengnyeongdoji (白翎島誌))

초록

본고는 남명학파 중북(中北)의 선비 설학(雪壑) 이대기(李大期, 1551∼1628)가 서해 절도 백령도에 유배되어 지은 도서(島嶼) 인문지리지(人文地理誌) 「백령도지(白 翎島誌)」를 상세하게 고찰하여 그 의의와 가치를 밝힌 논문이다. 이대기는 1614년영창대군이 죽임을 당하자 관직을 버리고 낙향하여 은거하였다. 그리고 집권 세력이었던 대북(大北)의 폐정과 대북의 영수 정인홍(鄭仁弘)의 실정에 반대한 동계(桐 溪) 정온(鄭蘊, 1569∼1641), 역양(嶧陽) 문경호(文景虎, 1556∼1619) 등과 정치적입장을 같이하고 이들을 비호하다가 결국 1620년 백령도에 위리안치되었다. 당대는 폐정과 실정으로 인해 민심이 이산하고 시비와 의리가 어지럽혀지는 등 남명학파의 갈등과 분열이 극심했던 시기였다.
세상이 어지러워 유배되었지만 반대로 유배는 곧 자신의 출처와 절의를 밝히는 명백한 증험이 되므로 이대기는 불평하거나 한탄하는 마음이 없었고 오히려 그의 심사는 편안하고 달가웠다. 이대기는 유배온 뒤 백령도가 관방의 요해지로서 지리적·전략적으로 중요한 곳인데 섬과 관련한 기록이 거의 전무하여 보고들은 것을바탕으로 백령도의 전모를 다룬 「백령도지」를 지었다. 「백령도지」는 위치, 거리, 해랑적(海浪賊)의 출몰, 전설, 형세, 관방(關防)의 요해지, 백령진(白翎鎭)의 설치, 역대의 백령 첨사(白翎僉使), 시세 변화에 따른 감회, 해랑도(海浪島)에 거주하던 백성들을 쇄환해 온 일, 백령도 인근의 도전도(島箭島)·대청도(大靑島)·소청도(小靑 島), 형승, 바닷길, 목마(牧馬), 조수, 초목, 생업, 풍토, 생리, 기후, 우물, 수질, 귀신숭배와 무속 신앙, 음란한 풍속, 목재와 약재 상기생(桑寄生), 대청도의 뽕나무 홍덕휘(洪德輝) 등을 기술한 2,866자로 된 장문의 지지(地誌)이다.
본 연구를 통해 「백령도지」가 백령도의 전모를 다룬 최초의 사찬 도서 인문지리지라는 점에서, 또 일반적인 지지 자료의 형식을 탈피하여 저자의 소회와 문학성이가미된 인문지리지라는 점에서 의의와 가치가 있음을 밝혔다. 이러한 본고의 연구성과는 백령도의 향토사·풍토사 연구 및 이대기 연구에 기여될 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

This paper is an in-depth study on Baengnyeongdoji, a geographical book by Lee Dae-gi (1551-1628). Lee Dae-gi was a Confucian scholar from the Nammyeong School who was exiled to Baengnyeong Island in the West Sea. He abandoned his official position and went into exile after the death of Prince Yeongchang in 1614, taking refuge with like-minded scholars, including Tonggye Jeong Un (1569-1641) and Yeongyang Mun Gyeong-ho (1556-1619), who opposed the corrupt government of Daebuk (大北) and the policies of Yeongsu Jung In-hong. Supporting these scholars eventually led to his exile to Baengnyeong Island in 1620. During that time, the Nammyeong School faced severe internal conflict and division due to disputes over political stances caused by the corrupt government and policies of the time, resulting in divided public sentiment and personal loyalties.
Though exiled due to the tumultuous state of affairs, Lee Dae-gi viewed his exile as clear proof of his origins and principles, and, therefore, he did not complain or lament.
Instead, he found comfort and contentment. After his exile, Lee Dae-gi recognized the strategic importance of Baengnyeong Island as a crucial geographical and strategic location.
However, he noticed a lack of records and information on the island. Based on the reports he received, he compiled a comprehensive geographical account of Baengnyeong Island titled Baengnyeongdoji.
Baengnyeongdoji covers various aspects of the island, such as its location; distance; incidents of pirate raids; legends; current situation; the significance of defense facilities; the establishment of Baengnyeongjin; historical envoys to the island; reflections on economic changes; the work of the people living on Haerangdo Island; neighboring islands like Dojeondo, Daecheongdo, and Socheongdo; topography; sea routes; raising horses; fishing; plant life; livelihoods; local customs; geography; climate; wells; water quality; ghost worship and shamanism; decadent customs; and the use of timber and medicinal plants like Sanggiseng (桑寄生) and HongDeokhwi (洪德輝), the mulberry tree on Daecheongdo Island. In sum, Baengnyeongdoji is a lengthy 2,866-character geographical record covering diverse aspects of Baengnyeong Island.
This study demonstrates that Baengnyeongdoji holds significance and value as the first privately compiled literary geographic account that comprehensively covers the various aspects of Baengnyeong Island. Additionally, the work stands out from the general format of geographical records by incorporating the author's personal reflections and literary style.
The research findings of this paper can contribute to the study of the local folk history and geography of Baengnyeong Island and offer insights into the life and work of Lee Dae-gi. Furthermore, the regional and cultural studies presented in this paper can contribute to understanding the significance of Baengnyeongdoji as a unique and valuable literary geographic account of the island.
