『雲谷陶山徽音』의 편찬 의식에 대한 고찰 (A Study on the Compilation Consciousness of 『Ungok Dosan Hwieum(雲谷陶山徽音)』)

초록

본 논문에서는 조선 후기의 학자 申益愰이 편찬한 『雲谷陶山徽音』에 대하여 고찰해 보았다. 이를 위하여 우선 신익황의 삶을 그의 편찬 사업에 주목하여 고찰해 보았다. 신익황은 葛庵 李玄逸과 학문적으로 토론하며 가르침을 받았으며, 이를 통하여 많은 학문적 발전과 이론적 정립을 이룬 퇴계 학맥의 계승자 중 한 사람이다. 그의 문집에는 각종 성리 논변이 남아 있으며, 『雲谷陶山徽音』‧『晦庵退溪 兩先生 棲息講道帖』‧『敬齋箴集說』‧『東國勝景臥遊錄』 등 각종 편찬 사업에 지속적으로 노력하였음을 확인하였다.
신익황의 『운곡도산휘음』은 송나라 주희와 조선의 이황이 속세를 떠나 은거하면서 학문을 연구하고 후진을 양성하는 중에 읊조린 아름다운 시편을 모아놓은 책이다. 신익황은 구암 이정이 편찬한 『운곡휘음』의 편차를 수정하고, 여기에 퇴계 이황의 시를 짝을 맞추어 선집하고 논해를 가한 『도산휘음』을 덧붙여서 완성하였다.
신익황은 이 책의 편찬을 통하여 ‘문학은 도의 구현’이라고 생각하는 전통적인 재도적 문학관을 표출하였다. 그는 이상적인 문학의 정점에는 주자의 문학이 있다고 생각하고, 그 이상적인 경지로 들어가기 위한 착수처에 바로 퇴계 이황의 문학이 있다고 생각하였다. 이러한 의식 하에 그는 기존에 존재했던 『운곡휘음』의 편차를 합리적인 방향으로 수정하고, 송나라의 주자와 조선의 퇴계를 나란히 위치시키고 짝을 맞추어 편집하는 주체적인 의식을 드러내었다. 공자로부터 시작되어 주자를 거쳐 우리나라의 퇴계로까지 연결된 유가의 道統이 스승인 갈암 이현일을 거쳐 면면히 이어지고 있다는 의식 하에, 신익황은 퇴계 학맥의 계승자 중 한 사람으로서의 소명의식을 담아 이 책을 편찬하였다. 또한 퇴계의 작품을 단순히 선집하는 데서 한 단계 더 나아가 작품 내용이나 시구 풀이와 관련한 논해를 추가하였다는 점에도 의미를 부여할 수 있다.
본고에서 살펴본 『운곡도산휘음』 뿐만 아니라 신익황은 주자와 퇴계가 세속을 떠나 은거하던 중의 시문과 사적을 모아 집성한 『회암퇴계 양선생 서식강도첩』을 편찬하였다. 그리고 주자 문인의 언행을 모아 기록한 『理學通錄』이나 무이산 관련 기록과 시문을 모은 『武夷志」와 같은 책이 퇴계에게 있어서도 필요하다고 생각하였다. 이는 유학 도통의 계승자로서 퇴계를 확실히 자리매김하고자 하는 편찬 의식의 발현이며, 『운곡도산휘음』은 이러한 편찬 의식이 구체적으로 구현된 저작물이라는 점에서 그 의의를 찾을 수 있겠다.

영어초록

This paper studied about 『Ungok Dosan Hwieum(雲谷陶山徽音)』 which was compiled by the late Joseon Dynasty scholar Shin Ik-hwang(申益愰). To this end, first, it considered the life of Shin Ik-hwang, focusing on his compilation business. He was taught while discussing academically with Galam(葛庵) Lee Hyeon-il(李玄逸). Through this, he was one of the successors of the Toegye academic genealogy, who has achieved many academic development and theoretical establishment. In his collection of literary works, it contained various kinds of discussion about human nature and natural laws. Also, It was confirmed that he had continued to make efforts in various compilation business such as 『Ungok Dosan Hwieum』, 『Hoeam Toegye two teacher SeosikGangdocheob(晦庵退溪 兩先生 棲息講道帖)』, 『Gyeongjaejam Jibseol(敬齋箴集說)』 and 『Dongguk Seunggyeong Wayulok(東國勝景臥遊錄)』.
Shin Ik-hwang’s 『Ungok Dosan Hwieum』 was a collection of beautiful poems which were recited by Zhū Xī(朱熹) of the Song Dynasty and Lee-Hwang(李滉) of Joseon, when they retired from the world, studied learning and fostered the younger generation. He corrected the chapter order of 『Ungok Hwieum』 compiled by Guam(龜巖) Lee-Jeong(李楨), and completed this book by adding 『Dosan Hwieum』 which he selected in pairs Toegye Lee-Hwang’s poems and commented about that.
Through the compilation of this book, Shin Ik-hwang expressed the traditional literary view of moral value as ‘Literature is the implementation of morality’. He thought that at the peak of ideal literature, there was Zhūzǐ(朱子)’s literature, and that there was the Toegye Lee-Hwang’s literature right at the starting point for entering the ideal stage. Under this consciousness, he revised the existing chapter order of 『Ungok Hwieum』 in a reasonable direction, and he represented the subjective consciousness by placing side by side Zhūzǐ of the Song Dynasty and Lee-Hwang of Joseon and editing them in pairs. Under the consciousness that the genealogy of Confucianism which started with Confucius and passed through Zhūzǐ to Toegye in Korea has continued ceaselessly through his teacher Galam Lee Hyeon-il, Shin Ik-hwang compiled this book with a sense of vocation as one of the successors of the Toegye academic genealogy. In addition, it could be meaningful in that it took a step further from simply selecting Toegye’s works and added an explanation related to the content of the work and the interpreting the phrase in a poem.
In addition to 『Ungok Dosan Hwieum』 reviewed in this paper, Shin Ik-hwang compiled 『Hoeam Toegye two teacher SeosikGangdocheob』, a collection of poetry and prose and historical records from the period when Zhūzǐ and Toegye were living in seclusion. Also, he thought that Toegye needed books such as 『Lihaktongrok(理學通錄)』 which collected and recorded the words and deeds of the Zhūzǐ’s disciple, and 『Muyiji(武夷志)』 which collected records and poetry and prose related to Mt. Muyi(武夷山). This was an expression of the compilation consciousness to establish Toegye as the successor of Confucianism. And, the significance of 『Ungok Dosan Hwieum』 could be found in that it was a literary work in which this compilation consciousness was concretely embodied.
