용서 딜레마 서사의 도덕적 상상력－다르덴 형제 감독의 영화를 중심으로－ (Moral Imagination through Dilemma Narrative of Forgiveness: Centering on Dardenne Brothers’ Films)

초록

본 연구는 딜레마 서사가 인간적 가치와 사회 정의에 대한 우리의 인식을 새롭게 한다는 점에서, 도전적인 딜레마 서사를 구현하고 있는 다르덴 형제 감독의 영화를 분석하고, 이로써 구체적인 삶의 공간에서 나타나는 도덕적 가치 체계를 탐구한다. 딜레마란 일반적으로 비교 불가능한가치나 대안이 선택 상황에 나타날 때, 한 가치의 선택으로 인해 다른 가치가 가져올 기회손실이크기 때문에 선택이 곤란한 상황이라고 정의된다. 이러한 딜레마를 도덕적 선택의 차원으로 맥락화한다면, 행위자가 양립 불가능한 두 대안 각각을 선택해야만 하는 도덕적 요구사항이 존재하나, 어느 한 요구 사항도 다른 요구 사항을 압도하지 못하는 상황이라고 정의할 수 있다.
다르덴 형제 감독은, 자신의 안위와 욕망을 떠나 타인의 생명과 필요를 돌볼 도덕적 힘이 인간에게 내재하는지 질문하며 우리 사회의 가치와 정의의 문제를 탐구해 오고 있다. 작중 인물들은본능적이고 자기중심적인 행동과 도덕적이고 이타적인 행동 사이에서 갈등하는데, 이들의 갈등상황의 중심에는 가해와 피해, 참회와 용서라는 대응적·대립적 국면이 생성하는 복잡한 문제가결부된다. 본 연구는 등장인물들이 맞닥뜨리는 이러한 갈등과 선택의 정황을, 특히 용서라는 도덕적 감각과 행위를 중심으로 분석함으로써 다르덴 형제 감독이 용서의 딜레마를 통해 타진하는도덕적 상상력의 의미를 파악하고자 한다. 구체적으로 ‘성찰적 분노(moral anger)’의 개념을 통해‘정의’를 내포하는 ‘용서’의 실천적 맥락을 탐구하고자 한다. 이를 위해 다르덴의 작품들 중 용서의 문제적 국면이 드러나는 <아들>(2002), <더 차일드>(2005), <내일을 위한 시간>(2014), <소년아메드>(2019) 등을 주요 연구 대상으로 삼는다.
우리의 삶은 ‘용서함’과 ‘용서받음’을 보편적으로 요구한다. 그러나 어떤 상황에서 용서는 불가능할 뿐만 아니라 ‘정의’와 대립하는 것으로 이해된다. 용서는 도덕적 딜레마이다. 파렴치하고잔인한 악행을 저지른 가해자를 왜 용서해야 하는지, 어떻게 하는 것이 용서인지, 언제 용서해야하는지 등, 수많은 질문이 ‘용서’의 뒤를 따른다. 용서 옹호론과 용서 반대론은 서로 팽팽하게대결하고 있다. 일률적인 용서의 개념은 존재하지 않으며, 용서가 필요한 상황에 처할 때마다그에 따른 각기 다른 성찰과 행동이 필요하다.
다르덴 형제 감독이 용서의 문제를 이해하는 주요한 근간은, 인간이 지닌 보편적 이성에 대한신뢰이다. 이 때문에 용서의 ‘당위성’과 ‘불가능성’은 더욱 팽팽하게 대립한다. 피해자는 보편적이성이 호소하는 용서에 시달려야 하며, 가해자는 자신의 불우한 환경을 핑계로 악행의 무게를덜고 용서를 구할 수 없다. 따라서 다르덴 형제 감독의 영화에서 용서는 피해자의 치유와 안녕이라는 실용적 효용성과 무관할 뿐만 아니라, 가해자에 대한 섣부른 공감과 연민을 통해 조성되지도않는다. 피해자가 용서로 나아가기 위해서는, 악행의 부정의(不正義)함과 부당함을 직시하고 자신이 받은 상처의 근원을 마주하는 성찰적 분노를 지녀야 한다. 성찰적 분노는, 나약하고 무기력한피해자가 어쩔 수 없이 내몰리는 몰아적(沒我的) 용서가 아닌, 인간적 연대와 회복으로서의 용서를 지향한다. 가해자는 도덕적 주체로서 선택하고 행동해야 할 순간에 외부적 정황에 휩쓸린 비주체적 패배자이다. 다르덴 형제 감독은 가해자가 과거 실패했던 국면과 비슷한 상황에서 이전과는 다른 선택을 하는, 반복과 변화의 장면을 통해 패배자를 일으켜 세운다. 가해자가 보이는 이러한행동의 변화는 신뢰할 만한 뉘우침으로 이해되면서 용서받을 가능성을 형성한다.
다르덴 형제 감독의 영화는 치밀한 개연성을 확보한 도전적 딜레마 서사로 용서에 대한 편파적이고 단선적인 이해를 수정함은 물론, 인간적 가치와 사회 정의에 대한 우리의 인식을 새롭게한다는 점에서 가치가 있다. 본 연구는 다르덴 형제 감독의 영화를 용서 딜레마 서사라는 핵심적논리로 읽어냄으로써, 그들의 작품 세계를 관통하는 윤리적 행위의 의미와 가치를 규명하는 의의를 지닌다.

With the realization that dilemma narrative can freshen our recognition of human values and social justice, this study analyzes Dardenne Brothers’ films which show challenging dilemma narrative and investigates system of moral values appearing in real life space. Dilemma is defined usually as a difficult-to-decide situation where under the circumstance that there are values or alternatives defying priority-evaluating, it is inevitably difficult to make any decision because one choice cannot be made without big loss of other choice’s value. Modified in moral decision cases, dilemma can be defined as a situation where though it is morally compelled to do one thing out of two alternatives that cannot go in tandem, neither of the two choices cannot surpass the other in respect of moral value.
Asking whether human being has any moral power to take care for others’ lives and necessities besides his or her own welfare and desire, Dardenne Brothers investigate the topics of value and justice of our society. Characters in their films meander between instinctive, selfish act and moral, altruistic act. On the core of such conflict, there are complicated problems derived from the action-reaction and battling situation of victimization vs. damage and contriteness vs. forgiving. This study analyzes such conflicting and choice-enforcing situations that confront the film characters, focusing especially on the moral sense and action i.e. forgiveness to understand the meaning of the moral imagination which Dardenne Brothers seek to show through forgiveness-related dilemma. Specifically, using the concept, ‘moral anger’, this study investigates practical meaning and context of ‘forgiveness’ which contains ‘justice’.
Among many Dardenne Brothers’ films, main films of investigation are ‘The Son’(2002), ‘The Child’(2005), ‘Two Days One Night’(2014), ‘Young Ahmed’(2019), which show forgiveness-related dilemma situation.
Normally, in many situations, life demands pardon and being forgiven. But, in some situation forgiveness is impossible and is considered as being contrary to justice.
Forgiveness is moral dilemma. Many questions why immoral and brutal victimizer should be forgiven, how to forgive and when to forgive etc. follow forgiveness. Arguments in favor of and against forgiveness conflict sharply. There is no one exact meaning of forgiveness. Whenever forgiveness is needed there should be different thinking and action accordingly.
The major stem of the way Dardenne Brothers understand problems of forgiveness is the belief in the universal human rationality. So, dutiful feature of forgiveness and impossibility of forgiveness clash more vehemently. Victims are urged by universal rationality to forgive and victimizers’ unlucky environments work as excuses for their wrongdoings and the excuses hider them from seeking forgiveness to lessen the burden of misdeed. Therefore, in Dardenne Brothers’ films, forgiveness is not related with the practical usefulness of mending victims and securing victims’ welfare and the background of forgiveness is not made through immature resonance with and compassion for victimizers. For victims to proceed to forgive, moral anger is needed which enables victims look straightly the injustice and unfairness of affliction and confront objective interpretation of their injury. Moral anger does not aim self eliminating forgiveness which feeble and forceless victims inevitably are forced to choose but aims forgiveness of humanity companionship and recovery. Victimizers are nonautonomous looser who are overwhelmed by outer forces when needed to choose to act as an independent moral individual. In their films Dardenne Brothers show repeatedly with some modification that victimizers act differently in situation similar to that where they failed to make the right choice so as to give victimizers another chance to correct. Such changes of victimizers’ action are understood as trustworthy remorse and put forgiveness in a possible range.
Dardenne Brothers’ films have challenging dilemma narrative of forgiveness which has well-plotted plausibility, correct unilateral and naïve understanding of forgiveness and renew our understanding of human values and social justice. These features make Dardenne Brothers’ films valuable. Interpreting Dardenne Brothers’ films through the core logic, dilemma narrative of forgiveness, this study has its merit in discovering the meaning and value of moral deeds which are constant theme in Dardenne Brothers’ films.
