일본 나라[奈良] 하세데라[長谷寺] 십일면관음상 연구 (A Study on the Eleven-Headed Avalokiteśvara of Hasedera in Nara, Japan)

초록

본 논문은 일본 나라[奈良] 하세데라[長谷寺] 십일면관음상의 도상적 특징과 의미를 재검토하고 모각(模刻)과 관련한 제문제를 살핀 것이다. 727년 제작된 하세데라의 관음상은 높이 7.8m에 달하는 거상(巨像)이자 영험한 연기(緣 起)가 있어 일본에서 오랫동안 경배된 중요한 상이다. 하지만 상에 대한 미술사적 고찰은 비교적 적은 편인데, 이는 원상(原像)이 944년에 소실된 이래 여러차례 재건되었으며, 현재 절에 모셔진 상은 무로마치 시대 1538년에 세워진 상이기 때문으로 파악된다. 하지만 하세데라 관음상은 도상과 모각이라는 측면에서 미술사적인 고찰을 하는 데 중요한 이슈를 제공하며, 관련된 기록과 유물도많아 풍부한 연구가 가능하다. 본 논문에서는 그동안 이 상의 주요한 도상적 특징으로 오른손으로 든 석장(錫杖)을 주목해 온 미술사적 관행을 비판적으로 검토하고, 오히려 연기를 자세히 살펴하세데라 관음상의 신앙과 더 직접적인 관련이 있는 것은 방형(方形) 대좌임을 강조했다.
더 나아가 하세데라 상과 같이 석장을 든 십일면관음상을 ‘하세데라식[長谷 寺](式)’ 상이라 부르며 하세데라의 관음상을 모각한 것으로 여기는 경향을 재고하며, 모각 전통의 다양성과 복잡성을 살폈다. 하세데라 관음상의 모각상으로여겨지는 상 가운데 외형과 크기, 재질이 다른 상 3구를 소개함으로써 모각에는크기, 전설, 봉안 장소, 재질 등의 다양한 요소가 복합적으로 고려됐음을 확인했다.

영어초록

This paper tries to re-examine the iconographic features of the Eleven-Headed Avalokiteśvara of Hasedera(長谷寺) at Nara in Japan and to reveal the complexities of repl ication. First made in 727 A.D., the gigantic wooden statue has been widely worshiped for a long time in Japan. However, the original statue was destroyed in 944, and the current one was established in 1538. It has a unique appearance of standing on a square pedestal with a staff(khakkhara) in its right hand. From the origin narrative(緣起), it can be seen that the square pedestal is an element that emphasizes the spirituality of the statue, whereas the most noticeable element, staff, is not presented in the origin narrative and sutra, so the origin is unclear. Nevertheless, previous studies dealing with the iconography of the Hasedera statue mainly explored the religious meaning of staff, which stems from the standpoint of art historians. This paper critically reconsiders the meaning of staff and emphasizes that the important element in the statue was the square pedestal.
There are many statues of Eleven-Headed Avalokitesvara with a staff in Japan, as like the Hasedera statue. Japanese scholars call these "Hasedera-style" and regard them as the replications of the Hasedera statue. However, the relationship between the "Hasedera-style" and Hasedera statue has not yet been fully considered. This paper critic ally considers the relationship and examines the diversity and complexity of the replication. It is argued that the replication mainly relies on the original iconography, but that the "Hasedera-style" does not represents all of the replicas. With three selected examples, this paper proposes that various factors such as the size, legend, place of enshrinement, and material of the original statue were regarded as significant elements that constitute replication.
