This study analyzes the landownership system and the characteristics of land management by catholic church during the colonial period, in hapduck village, situated in Dangjin district, Chungnam Province.
Hapduck village is a religious community established for as a part of missionary work of Korean Catholic. Since father Krempff was holding office in 1908, Hapduck church started to accumulate land, and soon became an enormous landlord. The church was possessing about 550 thousand pyoung at Dangjin district and 150 thousand pyoung at Hapduck district. This was to provide an economical base for poor Catholics, who became the poorest and degraded to the lowest status after the religious persecution in the early 19th century, and also to appropriate church funds from tenants rents. These were the reasons why religious factors had taken part in church landlord- tenants relations. The tenancy business was managed by church members via church organization. Priority of distributing farmland was according to church members but if the tenants violate the ten commandments, the church withdrew the tenancy contracts. Overall evaluation of the church landownership was neither exploitative nor ‘parasitic’. The economical relationship of Hapduck village’s agricultural business was closely linked with its religious structure and organization, and furthermore with social and cultural relationship. Also, it was interesting to note that there was a sign of growth among small - holding tenants during the colonial period either in land size and in numbers.
