초록

(연구배경 및 목적) 인간의 삶이 변화하고 진화하는 가운데서도 종교는 인간 존재의 중요한 측면으로 남아 있으며, 삶의 궁극적인 의미를 지속해서 추구하고 있다. 현대 종교학의 근간을 제공한 것으로 평가되는 루돌프 오토에게 ‘두려운 신비’ 개념은 그의 성스러움에 대한 이론 중 인간의 잠재된 공통 관념이나 가치판단, 신학적 이해와 거리를 둔 가장 핵심적인 개념으로 꼽힌다. 본 연구는 종교학의 이론이던 두려운 신비 개념을 종교적 공간의 이해로 확장시키고, 이를 브루더 클라우스 필드 채플의 분석에 활용함으로써 그 결과가 현대 종교 건축의 연구나 새로운 종교적 공간 디자인에 활용되는 것을 목적으로 한다. (연구방법) 첫째로, 루돌프 오토의 이론적 배경과 성스러움에 대한 그의 총론적 의미를 탐구하고 그 중 두려운 신비 개념의 특수성을 파악한다. 둘째로, 브루더 클라우스 필드 채플의 건축 특성을 탐구함으로써 대상의 공간적 이해 토대를 마련한다. 셋째로, 두려운 신비의 개념을 대표적 사례를 통해 탐구하여 두려운 신비 개념이 종교적 공간에서 가지는 특성을 파악한다. 넷째로, 앞의 연구를 바탕으로 브루더 클라우스 필드 채플에 나타나는 두려운 신비 특성을 분석하여 결론을 도출한다. (결과) 첫째, 브루더 클라우스 필드 채플은 광활한 대지와 이에 대비되는 어둠의 직면을 통해 두려운 신비의 무성적 감정을 불러일으키고 동시에 인식주체를 일상적 세계와 분리시켰다. 둘째, 채플에서 급격한 천장고와 시선의 변화를 만드는 것은 인식주체의 종교적 감정을 고조시켰다. 또한 물의 공간을 통해 수직적 공간감을 증폭시키는 것은 인식주체의 종교적 겸손을 이끌어 냈다. 셋째, 천장에서 쏟아지는 빛의 움직임을 내부로 유입시키고 이를 벽의 패턴을 통해 강조시키는 것은 두려운 신비의 생동성을 공간에 부여시켰다. 건축가는 흩어진 빛의 점들이 개구부를 중심으로 회전하듯 보이게 하여 이를 강조시킨다. 넷째, 예외적 구축 방식과 생소한 물성의 사용은 인식주체의 개념 해체와 혼란을 야기함으로써 공간 자체를 두려운 신비에 속한 이질적인 것으로 느끼게 한다. (결론) 브루더 클라우스 필드 채플에서 두려운 신비의 특성으로 확인한 분리성, 고조성, 생동성, 이질성은 각각 어둠의 대비, 수직적 공간감, 빛의 움직임, 재료의 물성을 통한 표현에 기인하였다. 본 연구의 결과는 이러한 특성과 공간적 표현방식의 연관성을 통해, 종교건축에서 나타난 표현들이 두려운 신비에 대한 인간의 감정반응과 어떤 인과관계를 가지는지 보여준다. 이 결과는 두려운 신비를 핵심으로 하는 성스러운 경험을 고양하기 위해 종교적 공간 디자인에서 선택할 수 있는 표현 방법을 제시하며, 본 연구의 결과가 향후 종교적 공간의 계획과 분석에 활용될 가능성을 기대하게 한다.

영어초록

(Background and Purpose)As human life changes and evolves, religion remains a crucial aspect of human existence and continues to pursue its meaning of life. Regarded as foundational to modern religious studies, Rudolf Otto's concept of “Mysterium Tremendum” is considered the central idea in his theory of the sacred, as it distances itself from latent common notions, value judgments, and theological interpretations inherent to human understanding. This study aims to extend the concept of the Mysterium Tremendum from religious theory to an understanding of religious spaces. By analyzing the Bruder Klaus Field Chapel, this research aims to provide insights that contribute to the study of contemporary religious architecture and the design of new sacred spaces. (Method) This study proceeded in four steps. First, it examined the theoretical background of Otto and explored the comprehensive meaning of the sacred in his work, focusing on the distinctive nature of Mysterium Tremendum. Second, the architectural characteristics of the Bruder Klaus Field Chapel were analyzed to form the basis for understanding its spatial features. Third, this study investigated the concept of the Mysterium Tremendum through representative examples to identify its specific manifestations in religious spaces. Based on these analyses, the characteristics of Mysterium Tremendum observed in the Bruder Klaus Field Chapel were studied to draw meaningful conclusions. (Results) This study yielded several key findings. First, the Bruder Klaus Field Chapel elicited the essence of Mysterium Tremendum through a contrast between the vastness of its natural surroundings and the confronting darkness within it, isolating the perceiver from the ordinary world. Second, drastic shifts in ceiling height and perspective intensified religious emotions in the perceiver. The inclusion of water further amplified a sense of vertical spatiality, evoking profound humility. Third, the movement of light streaming through the ceiling and interaction with the patterned walls infused the space with vitality, capturing the dynamic nature of Mysterium Tremendum. The architect enhanced this vitality by arranging the scattered light points to appear as if they were revolving around the central openings. Fourth, the use of unconventional construction methods and unfamiliar materials created disorientation and a sense of otherness, making the space itself an embodiment of Mysterium Tremendum. (Conclusions) The Bruder Klaus Field Chapel exhibited the attributes of separation, intensification, vitality, and otherness through contrasts of darkness, vertical spatiality, light dynamics, and materiality. These findings demonstrate how spatial expressions are directly connected to human emotional responses to the Mysterium Tremendum. This study highlights specific design strategies that enhance sacred experiences and offers valuable insights for future religious architectural projects and spatial analyses.
