'추상공간'의 폭력과 공포: <감기>와 <더 테러 라이브>와 <숨바꼭질> (Violence and Fear of the ‘Space of Abstraction’ ：The Flue(Gamgi), The Terror Live, and Sumbakkokjil)

비슷한 시기에 개봉한 세 편의 한국영화 <감기>와 <더 테러 라이브>와 <숨바꼭질>은 모두 실제 지명을 거론하면서 구체적인 한국의 도시 공간을 재현한 작품들이다. 특히 이들이 각각 배경으로 삼고 있는 분당과 여의도, 일산은 1970-1980년대 부동산 안정과 중앙집권적인 지배체제의 강화를 목적으로 한 도시계획의 산물이라는 공통점을 갖고 있다. 본 연구는 세 편의 영화가 제시하는 공간을 ‘사회적인 공간’과 그것의 영화적인 재현이라는 관점에서 탐구한다.
‘사회적인 공간’ 개념은 프랑스의 공간 사회학자 앙리 르페브르에게서 차용한 것이다. 그에 따르면 사회적인 공간의 특성은 공간의 물리적 속성이 아니라 그것이 다양한 사회 질서 안에서 맺고 있는 관계에 의해 정의된다. 절대공간이 붕괴되면서 도시계획과 같은 합리적 국가 권력이나 제도에 의해 등장한 ‘추상공간’은 그 중 몸(들)과 맺는 관계와 공간의 사회적 위계를 가장 극명하게 드러내는 공간이다. 실제적인 ‘몸’과 일상이 부재한 채, 잘리고 정리되고 구획된 공간은 그 자체로 추상화의 작업과 같은 폭력성을 내재하고 있다.
본 연구는 영화 <감기>와 <더 테러 라이브>와 <숨바꼭질>이 나름의 재현방식으로 추상공간의 폭력성과 모순을 폭로하는 지점들을 지니고 있다고 주장한다. 가장 안락하고 편안한 삶을 보장할 것 같았던 공간이 가장 공포스럽고 잔혹한 공간이 되는 모순은 그 공간이 ‘재앙들’을 마주할 때 극단적으로 표출된다. 여기서 재앙들은 일종의 ‘계기’로서, <감기>에서는 치명적인 변종 바이러스의 출현으로, <더 테러 라이브>에서는 테러의 위협으로, <숨바꼭질>의 경우는 연쇄살인의 공포로 체험된다. 그런데 이는 곧 르페브르가 일상생활의 일탈이자 각성의 계기가 되고 결국은 ‘공간의 실천’에 기여한다고 믿었던 상상적인 공간, 즉 ‘재현공간’으로서의 영화의 가능성을 드러내는 것이기도 하다.

영어초록

The Flue(ask Gamgi), The Terror Live, and Sumbakkokjil are commercial films released almost at the same time in Korea, and they made huge success in the box office. The peculiar thing is that they all use the real names of cities or places of contemporary Korea, and function as the reminder of the modern historicity and reality of the cities. Bundang, the setting place of The Flue, Yeoido of The Terror Live, and Ilsan of Sumbakkokjil are the spaces ‘produced’ in the result of government city planning in the 1970’s and 1980’s. This research explores the idea that the spaces in those films would be ‘social spaces’ and their representation of those spaces could be an appealing critical point.
The term and concept of ‘social space’ is borrowed from French sociologist of space Henri Lefebvre. According to him, the specialty of social space is defined not by the space's physical element but by its diverse relationships with others in our social orders. With the destruction of ‘space of absolution’, the ‘space of abstraction’ has appeared by the government systems or legal power like city planning. It is the space where reveals its alienated relationship with 'bodies' and spacial hierarchy in its society. Without the presence of physical bodies and familiar relationships with them, violence is inherent in this abstract space, because it is arranged and divided and even destroyed in force, just like the abstract should be.
1. In this research, I propose that these three films, The Flue(ask Gamgi), The Terror Live, and Sumbakkokjil, disclose contradictions of the absolute space in their own space of representation. These contradictions contain the truth of the absolute space as the most cruel and the fearful space where should have been the most cosy and safe one. And the spacial violence is revealed in ‘moments’ when it encounters some kind of ‘disaster’ such as the fatal influenza virus, the imminent threat of terrorism, and the fear of serial murders. In this point we can consider contemporary commercial films in the notion of Lefebvre’s ‘space of representation’ where contains the possibility and potentiality for the spacial practice and eventually, for the revolution of everyday life.
