초록

조선시대의 마지막 왕조인 순조-순종대는 강대국의 외침과 개방압력으로 인한 정치적 격동기로서의 시대적 배경을 안고 있다. 이에 따라 사회적으로는 극도의 혼란기에 빠져들어 왕실을 비롯하여 민중들에 이르기까지 현세 및 내세의 안녕을 위한 실질적인 의지처가 필요했을 것이며, 이에 왕실에서 직접 시주하여 민중들을 끌어 들이기 위한 수단으로서의 괘불화 조성에 앞장서 왔다고 할 수 있을 것이다.
특히 왕실의 안녕을 위한 佛事는 지역적으로 왕실과 가까운 서울․경기지역 소재의 원찰을 통해 적극적으로 이루어지고 있었음은 지금까지 전해오는 왕실발원 괘불화 畵記와, 각 사찰에 전해오는 왕실 시주의 후불화라든가 불상 및 범종 등을 통해서도 충분히 짐작 가능하리라 생각된다.
지금까지 조사․보고된 순조-순종대 조성의 서울․경기지역 괘불화는 27점 정도이다. 이 가운데 왕실의 안녕을 기원하는 발원과 함께 시주 내용을 알 수 있는 괘불화만 무려 14점에 이를 정도로 당시 시대상을 반영하면서도 예술성까지 겸비한 대표적인 불화이나, 단지 조성시기가 뒤떨어진다는 이유만으로 그동안 연구대상에서 소홀히 여겨져 왔다. 19 ～20세기 들어 서울․경기지역에 집중하여 괘불화가 조성되고 있는 점에 착안하여 관심을 가져오던 차 최근 공개되지 않았던 왕실발원 괘불화인 서울 흥천사․봉국사․봉원사 괘불화가 모습을 드러냄으로써 순조-순종대 왕실발원 괘불화의 본격적인 연구에 박차를 가하게 되었고 흐름을 파악하는데 도움이 되었다.
순조-순종대 왕실발원 괘불화의 원활한 연구를 위하여 먼저 이 시기 시대상을 통해 서울․경기지역 괘불화를 조성하게 된 배경을 살펴보았으며, 다음으로 왕실관련 괘불화의 주제별에 따른 도상 전개 및 화기에 대해 알아보았다. 특히 외형적 화면구성 및 형태만을 통한 도상의 단순 이해보다는 화기 및 발원내용을 통해 도상을 이해하는 것이 필요하다고 판단되어 왕실발원 괘불화의 화기 분석에 중점을 두었다. 이어서 순조-순종대 왕실발원 괘불화의 흐름 이해에 도움이 되리라고 생각되어 화면구성과 형태 및 색채와 문양 등 양식특징에 대해 구체적으로 살펴봄으로써 일반 괘불화와의 차이점을 밝혀보는데 역점을 두고자 하였다.
아직도 미공개 자료가 더 밝혀질 가능성이 있으리라 생각되나 지금까지 조사된 자료를 통해서나마 순조-순종대 왕실발원 괘불화의 일면이나마 살펴보았다는데 의의를 두고자 한다.

영어초록

The reigns of Kings Sunjo-Sunjong, which were the last period of the Joseon Dynasty, were turbulent times interspersed with invasions by foreign powers and external pressure to open the door. As the society fell into extreme chaos, both the royal house and people were in need of substantial refuges that they would resort to for their well-being in this world and the next. In this historical situation, the royal house led the creation of Buddhist banner paintings by dedicating offerings as a means to involve people.
In particular, local Buddhist projects(佛事) for the well-being of the royal house were carried out actively through vow temples in the Seoul-Gyeonggi(서울-京畿) area close to the royal palaces as suggested clearly by the painting records(畵記) of royal house- sponsored Buddhist banner paintings extant, background paintings commissioned by the royal house preserved in temples, Buddhist statues, Buddhist bells, etc.
Some 27 Buddhist banner paintings created during the reigns of Kings Sunjo-Sunjong have been found and reported in the Seoul-Gyeonggi area. Among them, as many as 14 Buddhist banner paintings contain information on prayers for the well-being of the royal house and the details of offering. Although they are representative Buddhist paintings outstanding in terms of both historicity and artistry, however, they have been regarded as less significant by researchers only because they were created relatively late.
Along with the interesting fact that the creation of Buddhist banner paintings in the 19th-20th centuries was concentrated in the Seoul-Gyeonggi area, recently, Buddhist banner paintings at the Heungcheon-sa(興天寺), Bongguk-sa(奉國寺), and Bongwon-sa(奉元寺) Temples, which were created with the support of the royal house, were opened to the public. This has not only given impetus to research on royal house-sponsored Buddhist banner paintings during the reigns of Kings Sunjo-Sunjong but also made a contribution to the understanding of the historical development of Buddhist paintings.
For research on royal house-sponsored Buddhist banner paintings during the reigns of Kings Sunjo-Sunjong, this study examined first the background of the creation of Buddhist banner paintings in the Seoul-Gyeonggi area by reviewing the historical situations of those days, and then analyzed icons and painting records according to the theme of Buddhist banner paintings related to the royal house. Furthermore, as it was considered necessary to understand icons based on painting records and the contents of prayers rather than simple understanding of the icons through external screen composition and form, this study focused on the analysis of the painting records of the royal house-sponsored Buddhist banner paintings.
In addition, this study put emphasis on differences between royal house-sponsored Buddhist banner paintings during the reigns of Kings Sunjo-Sunjong and ordinary Buddhist banner paintings by scrutinizing style characteristics such as screen composition, form, color and pattern as it was believed to be helpful in understanding the development of the royal house-sponsored Buddhist banner paintings.
Although it is possible to find unpublished materials in the future, this study is still meaningful in that it illuminated an aspect of royal house-sponsored Buddhist banner paintings created during the reigns of Kings Sunjo-Sunjong with available materials.
