조선조 세종대 문묘제례악에 대한 추고 (Study of the Memorial Music developed for the Confucian shrine during Joseon dynasty King Sejong's reign)

초록

현행 한국문묘제례악은 1430년(세종12)에 조선조에서 새로 제작한 제사아악 가운데 일부로서 남아있다. 그런데 초기 제사아악의 구조로 볼 때, 현행 한국문묘제례악은 여러 면에서 모순점으로 의심되는 부분이 발견된다. 애초 세종대의 신제 제사아악에는 12종의 기본선율유형이 있고, 매 유형마다 12궁을 갖춤으로써 총 144곡의 방대한 규모를 이루고 있었다. 이는 곧 당시 추구해온 유가적 예악제도의 수립과 밀접한 관련이 있으며, 따라서 제사의 종류, 의식절차, 주제자의 신분 등을 고려하여 각각 그 조건에 합당한 악곡을 선별 사용할 수 있는 예적 장치가 마련된 것이라 할 수 있다. 이러한 사실에 기하여 현행 문묘제례악의 모태인 세종대의 문묘제례악을 추고해 봄으로써 현행 한국문묘제례악에서의 모순점이 어떻게 개선되어야 하는지 확인하여 보았다.
그 결과, 현행 한국문묘제례악의 모순점이 극복되려면, ① 조선 전기 제례악의 전통을 따라서 등가에만 악장이 있게 해야 한다. ② 매 절차의 음악은 세종대의 신제 제사아악으로 대처함으로써 송신을 제외한 모든 절차에 오로지 영신곡을 연주하는 폐단이 일소되어야 한다. ③ 초헌에서 『세종실록』 「악보」의 정위와 4배위에 부르던 악장을 적용함으로써 정위 악장 한 가지만을 부르는 잘못을 바로잡아야 한다. ④ 문무퇴⋅무무진의 절차에는 당하악인 고선궁(영신악의 일종)을 연주하지 말고, 세종시기부터 통용되던 ‘서안지악’(『악학궤범』에 전함)으로 대처하여야 한다.
이상의 개선안은 현행 한국문묘제례악에 내재해있는 여러 가지 모순들을 극복할 수 있는 방안은 될 수 있겠지만, 아악기의 연주는 실로 어려운 것이어서 고도의 음악적 훈련이 요구되기 때문에 실천되기 어려운 문제점이 있다.

영어초록

Korean memorial music for the Confucian shrine that is now observed today(韓國文廟祭禮樂) remains as part of the Memorial service Ah-ak music(祭祀雅樂) which was newly developed and established during the Joseon dynasty period, in 1430(12th year of King Sejong's reign) to be exact. Yet, considering the structure of this 'newly created' Memorial service Ah-ak music of the Sejong's era, the current Korean memorial music for the Confucian shrine shows some apparent contradictions, in many aspects. Originally, the Ah-ak music of the Sejong's era had 12 types of basic melody formats, and each format was equipped with 12 Gung/宮 units, resulting in a grand system of total of 144 music pieces in its collection. This had very much to do with the efforts of the people of the time to establish a Confucian institution of protocols and music. And this grand collection suggests that an ideal condition, in which the users would be able to find and select any musical piece that they deemed appropriate for various types of memorial services, found usable for a variety of procedures, and also considered suitable for the status of the conductor itself, was finally secured in terms of musical protocols. In this article, the Sejong era's newly created memorial music for the Confucian shrine, which practically gave birth to the current Korean memorial music for the same purpose, is examined in order to suggest ways of amending the contradictory aspects apparently existent in the current version.
In order to remedy the problems of the current Korean memorial music for the Confucian shrine, several corrections should be made. ① Only the Deung-ga section should contain a musical piece, abiding by the traditions from the early half of the Joseon dynasty period. ② All music for the procedures and steps should be replaced with the Sejong era's newly established memorial music for the Confucian shrine, to eliminate the malpractice of playing the 'Yeongshin' music in every phases except the 'Songshin' phase. ③ During the first offering of a drink, the music that was played in Jeongwi and 4-Baewi phases(according to the 「Musical score」 in 『Annals of King Sejong's reign』) should be used, to rectify the wrongdoing of only playing the Jeongwi musical piece. ④ During the Munmu-twae․Mumu-jin phase, instead of the Goseon-gung piece(a 'welcoming spirit' type of music) which belonged to the Dang-Ha-ak category, the 'Seoan-ji-ak' that had been used since the Sejong era(recorded in 『Akhak Gwaebeom』) should be played.
Suggestions made here could be considered as options to be used in resolving the contradictory aspects inside the current Korean memorial music for the Confucian shrine, yet playing the Ah-ak instruments is a truly difficult task and thus requires a high-level musical training, so it would be considerably difficult to pursue all these suggestions as viable solutions.
