대가야와 신라의 ‘國婚’과 ‘變服’의 함의 (The Implications of Daegaya and Shilla’s Royal Marriages and “Changing Clothes”)

초록

이 글에서는 대가야와 신라의 ‘國婚’을 통해 양국 관계의 추이를 살펴보았다. 국혼 과정에서 나타나는 신라 衣冠과 ‘變服’ 문제를 복식의 정치적 의미에서 분석하였다.
6세기에 들어서면서 대가야는 백제와 신라의 위협에 직면하였다. 이에 대응하여 대가야는 신라에 국혼을 요청하였다. 대가야는 신라와의 국혼을 통해서 백제와 신라의 군사적 위협에서 벗어나 독자성을 유지할 수 있었지만, 신라와의 관계는 점차 신라에 복속되어 가는 방향으로 전개되었다.
전근대 복식은 禮的 질서의 확립을 위해 활용된 수단이다. 신라 의관은 국혼의 성립 과정에서부터 논의된 주요 안건이었다. 대가야에 파견되었던 신라인들은 신라 의관을 착용하고 있었고, 대가야의 여러 지역에 배치되었다. 대가야왕에 의해 신라인들이 배치되었던 점을 고려한다면, 대가야가 신라의 대가야 잠식 의도를 알고 있었더라도 이들에게 일정한 임무를 부여하고 그 역할에 대해 기대했던 바가 있었을 것이다.
이후 신라에서는 공식적으로 대가야에서 신라 복식으로 활동했던 신라인들을 통해 대가야에 대한 영향력 확대를 꾀하였고, 국혼 관계를 유지하면서 점진적으로 대가야를 흡수･병합하려고 했다. 이 과정에서 대가야인의 ‘變服’ 문제가 대두하게 되었다. 대가야인의 ‘變服’으로 인해 대가야 내부에 갈등이 생겼고, 대가야인들이 신라를 선택하게 되는 상황이 점차 늘어나게 되었다. 즉, 대가야인의 ‘變服’은 결국 신라가 가야 제국을 복속･통합하는 데에 있어서 효과적으로 활용되었다. 대가야는 점진적으로 신라에 복속되었고, 562년에 최종적으로 소멸하게 되었다. 국혼 관계에서 나타나는 신라 의관과 ‘變服’은 신라가 가야 제국을 복속･통합하기 위한 조치 중의 하나였음을 알 수 있다.

영어초록

This paper explores the development of the relationship between Daegaya and Silla through the royal marriages conducted between them. Specifically, the symbolism of Silla's clothing and undergoing a “Changing Clothes” in the process of royal marriages is analyzed in terms of the political meaning of clothing.
With the onset of the 6th century, the Daegaya faced threats from Baekje and Silla. In response to this struggle, Daegaya requested conducting royal marriages with Silla. These royal marriages helped Daegaya evade the military threats of Baekje and Silla, while also allowing Daegaya to maintain its independence. However, as a result, Daegaya’s status gradually developed into one of subjugation under Silla.
During pre-modern times, clothing was used as a means to establish ceremonial rank. Silla clothing was an important issue that was discussed from the establishment of the royal marriage system. Many people from Silla were dispatched across various regions of the Daegaya, wearing the traditional clothing of the Silla. An important point to consider is that these individuals were dispatched under the command of Daegaya’s king. As such, even if the people of Daegaya had been aware of Silla's intention to encroach on their territory, the dispatched individuals would have been given certain tasks and would have been expected to fulfill them accordingly.
Afterwards, the Silla sought to expand its influence on Daegaya through the Silla people who were officially active in Daegaya wearing Silla’s traditional clothing. Furthermore, Silla and Daegaya upheld the custom of royal marriages, as a means of the former’s attempt to gradually absorb and merge the land and people of Daegaya. It was through this process that the “Changing Clothes” of the Daegaya people became an important issue. Conflicts arose within Daegaya due to the noticeable changes in their fellow people, and there were increasing instances in which the Daegaya people chose Silla over their own identity. In other words, the transformation of Daegaya was effectively utilized in Silla's subjugation and integration of Daegaya and its people. Daegaya was gradually subjugated under the Silla, and finally disappeared completely in 562. Silla's clothing and “Changing Clothes” that appear in the national relationship were one of Silla's measures to subjugate and unify the Gaya.
