조선 세조대 여진 정벌과 홍윤성의 활동 (Conquest against Jurchens and activities of Hong Yoon-seong in the reign of King Sejo, Joseon)

초록

본고는 1460년(세조 6)에 일어난 조선의 여진 정벌인 ‘경진북정’ 전후 홍윤성의 활동에 대해 살펴보았다. ‘경진북정’은 모련위의 추장이었던 낭발아한을 조선이 처벌하자, 그의 아들 아비거가 여진인들을 규합하여 조선의 변경을 침입한 것에서 기인하였다. 세조는 여진인들의 침입이 격하되자 홍윤성을 조전원수로 삼아 함길도로 파견하였다. 세조는 홍윤성을 파견하면서 그에게 내구마와 금으로 용을 그린 안장, 주홍의 말다래, 홍모영의 장식을 하사하였다. 이는 세조가 자신을 대리해서 홍윤성을 파견한다는 의미를 부여하였다고 볼 수 있다.
세조는 權臣인 홍윤성을 파견함으로써 도망간 여진인들을 안정시켜 돌아오게 하고, 배반한 여진인들을 귀순시켜 두만강 유역에서 조선과 여진과의 싸움이 확전되는 것을 막으려고 하였다. 홍윤성은 세조의 방책에 따라 여진인들을 적극적으로 귀순시켜 집으로 돌아오게 하였고, 그의 활동으로 투항·귀순한 자들을 서울로 상경시키기도 하였다. 세조는 아비거가 조선을 침입하다가 죽고, 홍윤성의 여진 초무가 성공을 거두자, 여진 정벌을 일시적으로 중지하였다.
그러던 중 明은 조선의 낭발아한에 대한 처벌을 문제시하고 여러 차례 칙서와 사신을 보내며 조선을 압박하였다. 이때 여진인들은 명의 조선 압박을 이용해 조선에 한편으로는 귀순하고, 한편으로는 침입하는 것을 멈추지 않았다. 결국 세조는 明使가 모련위 지역에 머물고 있음에도 신숙주와 홍윤성을 파견하여 여진에 대한 정벌을 실행하였다. 당시 정벌의 총지휘관은 신숙주였고, 부지휘관은 홍윤성이었으며, 이들은 총 8,300명의 군사를 4로군으로 편성하였다. 이들은 종성을 출발하여 여진인들의 거주 지역을 기습 공격하고 4일 만에 귀환하였다.
‘경진북정’으로 조선군은 여진인 430여 명을 죽이고, 9백여 채의 집과 재산을 불태웠으며, 죽이거나 사로잡은 우마가 1천여 마리에 이르는 등 이전 3차례에 걸친 여진 정벌보다 최대의 전과를 올렸다. 경진북정의 성공이 가능했던 것은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 세조의 권신인 신숙주와 홍윤성을 각각 정벌의 책임자와 부책임자로 파견하여 장수들에게 정벌의 의지를 강력하게 보이고 실천하였다. 둘째, 이 정벌은 문신들이 지휘관이 된 최초의 여진 정벌로, 이들은 당시 공을 앞세워 성급한 정벌을 주장하던 무신들을 제어하면서 여진 지역에 대해 철저하게 파악하여 준비하였다. 셋째, 조선의 군사 행동이 단기간에 전 군사가 전방위로 기습 공격하고 철수하였다. 마지막으로 세조가 무인의 자질과 무재를 가진 홍윤성을 파견함으로써 자신을 대리화시키고 신숙주를 보완하게 함으로써 문무 양측면에서 정벌의 성과를 이끌어내었다.

영어초록

The sudy reviewed activities of Hong Yoon-seong at the time around ‘Gyeongjin Bukjeong(庚辰北征, conquest to northern area in the year of Gyeongjin)’ which was one against Jurchens occurred in the 6th year of Sejo(1460). ‘Gyeongjin Bukjeong(庚辰北征)’ was caused by the invasion of Abigeo(阿比車) and other Jurchens to border area of Joseon. His invasion was stimulated by his father’s death. Joseon killed his father Nangbalahan(浪孛兒罕) who was the chief of Moryeonwi(毛憐衛). Sejo sent army under command of Hong Yoon-seong, Jojeonwonsoo(助戰元帥) to Hamgildo against their increasing invasion. Sejo gave him Naeguma(內廏馬), saddle with painted dragon in gold, scarlet saddle flap, and decoration of Hongmoyeong(紅毛榮). This means that Sejo sent Hong Yoon-seong instead of him.
Sejo sent Hong Yoon-seong, a powerful courtier to let fled Jurchens return and betrayed Jurchens surrender. This aimed to prevent expansion of war between Joseon and Jurchens in Tumen river basin. Hong Yoon-seong actively made Jurchens surrender and return to home according to plan of Sejo. Some of the Jurchens were sent to the city of Hanyang to live there. Sejo temporarily stopped conquest to Jurchens because Abigeo died during invasion to Joseon and Hong Yoon-seong succeeded placating Jurchens.
Then Ming Dynasty(明) raised issue regarding death of Nangbalahan and pressed Joseon by sending a Royal letter and envoys several times. Jurchens surrendered to Joseon, But on the other hand, they invaded Joseon, using pressure to Joseon from Ming. In the end, Sejo sent Shin Sook-ju to conquer Jurchens though an envoy from Ming stayed in Moryeonwi(毛憐衛). Then times, the commander for the conquest was Shin Sook-ju and the vice-commander was Hong Yoon-seong. There were 8,300 soldiers in total composed of Four direction army. They started in Jongseong, suddenly attacked the area where Jurchens lived. It took only 4 days from the start of the conquest till return.
Joseon army recorded military achievements better than existing three conquests through ‘Gyeongjin Bukjeong’. That is, killed 430 Jurchens, burned about 900 houses including property, about 1,000 horses including cow live or dead. The reasons of success of Gyeongjin Bukjeong’ are as follows.
First, Sejo’s strong willingness to conquer was shown to the generals by appointing Shin Sook-ju and Hong Yoon-seong as commander and vice-commander respectively. Second, The conquest to Jurchens was the first one by a commander with the position of civil minister. The organization of such personnel made it possible to control military ministers who insisted hasty conquest for the purpose of their performance. Therefore, thorough preparation was possible, making deep study on Jurchens area. Third, Soldiers of Joseon made sudden attack with all forces for short period and then, withdrew. Finally, Sejo showed himself though not participating in the conquest, by sending Hong Yoon-seong with quality and skill as military man. And Sejo led performance of conquest in the aspects of literary and military by supplementing Shin Sook-ju.
