    초록

The scars of war are not easily forgotten anywhere in the world. Moreover, the scars only deepen as time passes by no matter how big or small the war is. There are various results from war. It rapidly changes from harmony to resentment, and even has affects on the next generation. That is why we often say that the sadness is bigger for those who survived in war than those who died or were injured. The mourning of war does not stop there. It results in ignorance of the world, distrust of others, numbness to death, even despair of one's life. Bertolt Brecht, who witnessed the horrible scenes of war, warned to the survivors of war not to be fooled by the temptation of another war.
Three years of The Korean War had left enormous damages. According to a report submitted to UN, the casualties of South Korea alone was up to 1.3 million people. Among soldiers, forty seven thousands died, one hundred eighty three thousand injured, and seventy thousand became war prisoners or missing. Among politicians, approximately three hundred sixty four thousand were murdered by North Korea for various political reasons. More than two hundred thousand South Korean youth were forced to join North Korea's volunteer army, and more than 5 million South Koreans lost their homes. The ravages of war had resulted in many refuge camps, dispersed families, war orphans, the destruction of the economy, and unstable society. Therefore, the awareness of a war-experienced generation have had a deep effect on their ordinary life, and even became the milestone in changing the flow of society and history in the post-war era.
However, as second Two Koreas Summit Meeting is happening, we need to reinvestigate The Korean War from various points of view, beyond the differences in generations. When The Korean War broke out, it had instantly became the main topic among intellectuals around the world. Arguments among J. P. Sartre, A. Camus, M. Merleau-Ponty are some examples. Their position towards The Korean War demanded world wide attention. J. P. Satre expressed the criminality of Korean War based on fact and reasoning, Merleau-Ponty showed a disillusionment for the Communism and Camus got exasperated on North Korea's invasion, which was against the spirit of humanism. The differences in opinions toward The Korean War were so controversial that it had resulted in a hurt friendship between A. Camus and J. P. Sarte and M. Merleau-Ponty to turn his back on Sartre.
Then how were the intellectuals in our society? This is an issue that needs to be investigated comprehensively from a broad point of view, in terms of society, politic, culture, economy, and history. Surely, there were many who actually participated in The Korean War, but there were as many who did not. However, the works of latter fell to draw that much of attentions from the readers. This dissertation is about research of the poets who had actually been though The Korean War, but kept certain distance from it. The poet Shin Dong-jib's early poems from the 1950's are used as basic text. His poem focused more on the internal meaning of the war rather than the mere description. By doing so, he tried to create his supernatural interests and middle world in a poetic way.
