관동대지진, 소문과 증언과 문학 (Kanto Earthquake in Korean Literature —Rumor, Testimony and the Locus of Literature—)

초록

관동대지진기 조선인 학살에 관한 문서 대부분은 학살의 잔혹상을 증언하는 내용이다. 사건 자체에 대한 증언을 넘어서 사건이 개인의 삶과 공동체의 향방에서 차지하는 의미가 질문되고 구성된 일은 드물다고 하겠다. 이 논문에서는 조선인 학살 관련 문학 텍스트를 통해 증언 이상의 문학화 시도를 살펴보고자 했다. 이를 위해 김기진의 에세이와 김동환의 서사시, 그리고 정우홍의 소설과 송영의 소설·희곡을 다루되 관동대지진 관련 일본 텍스트 등과의 교차를 통해 그 의미를 입체화하려 했다. 김기진의 에세이(「마음의 폐허」) 등은 관동대지진 체험을 인류화·보편화한다는 점에서, 김동환의 장편 서사시 『승천하는 청춘』은 남녀간 사랑을 통한 학살 경험의 승화·초월을 기도한다는 점에서 독특한 바 있다. 정우홍의 「진재전후」와 송영의 1923년 배경 소설 및 희곡은 대지진 경험을 좀더 긴 시간축에 위치시키면서 트랜스내셔널한 연대의 가능성을 재구성하려고 한다는 점이 주목된다. 김기진·김동환이 ‘숭고’의 전략을 구사한다면 정우홍·송영은 ‘연대’의 가능성을 시사함으로써 대지진기 경험을 문학화한다. 돌이켜보건대 당시 문학에서 대지진을 직·간접적으로 다룬 텍스트 중 학살의 잔혹상 자체를 초점으로 한 종류는 거의 없다. 검열로 인한 난관을 고려해야겠으나, ‘증언 이후’를 생각해야 할 현재 시점에서는 이들 텍스트를 회피나 우회로 평가하기보다 대지진기 경험을 그 시공간적 제한성을 넘어서 의미화하려 한 시도로서 기억할 필요가 있을 것이다.

영어초록

The massacre of Koreans during the Great Kanto Earthquake is an event that still casts a deep shadow over East Asia although 100 years have passed. Since 1945, through the dedicated efforts of many scholars and civic groups, a significant number of testimonies have been collected and recorded, making up most of the historical materials related to the massacre of Koreans. As such, many of the documents created about this incident testify to the brutality of the massacre. Beyond the testimony of the incident itself, it is rare to be questioned and constructed what it had been in the afterlives of individuals and community. In this paper, I attempted to examine attempts to approach a variety of literary responses to the massacre rather than few commitment to testimony. To this end, I picked up Kim Ki-jin’s essay, Kim Dong-hwan’s epic poem, Jeong Woo-hong’s novel, and Song Young’s novel and play, and placed them in the intersection with texts of Japanese writers or voices from contemporary Korean-Japanese. Kim Ki-jin’s essay (“Ruins of the Heart”) universalizes the experience of the Great Kanto Earthquake as a revolutionary one, while Kim Dong-hwan’s long epic poem “Ascending Youth” prays for the sublimation and transcendence of the such a terrible experience of massacre through love. It is also noteworthy that Jeong Woo-hong’s “Before and After the Earthquake” and Song Young’s 1923 background novel and play attempted to reconstruct the possibility of transnational solidarity by placing the experience along a longer time axis. While Kim Ki-jin and Kim Dong-hwan use the strategy of ‘sublimity’, Jeong Woo-hong and Song Young recollect the experience by contemplationg upon the possibility of ‘solidarity’. All of them refused or evaded a representation of the massacre as nothing but a brutal genocide, but transformed it into a bitter but reflected experience for a rebirth of a nation and the world. This might be primarily due to censorship and their efforts were not successful, but we need to think about “a path beyond testimony” through these examples. In this sense, it is recommendable to remember these texts as an attempt to reappreciate the earthquake and the massacre rather than denying these texts as avoidance or detours.
