천문대로서의 첨성대 이설(異說)에 대한 재론(再論) (A Review on Divergent Views of Cheomseongdae as an Astronomical Observatory)

초록

고대 천문학은 점성학적인 목적과 같은 맥락에 서 있다. 『삼국사기』 선덕왕지기삼사 는 선덕왕이 미래를 정확히 예지하는 능력을 보여주기 위한 기사였다. 따라서 여기에 등장하는 첨성대의 실체도 그 예지 기사를 매개하며, 동시에 범주화하고 있다. 오히려 한 칸을 띄어 쓰고 별기 운운하며 소개한 첨성대는 지기삼사 내용 전체를 동시에 아우르는 정도의 위력으로 자리한다고 하겠다. 첨성대가 천문대에 어울리지 않다는 지적은 이미 많다. “① 출입이 불편하다. ② 관 측 공간 좁다. ③ 기단이나 창구 및 정자석의 방향이 모두 진남북 방향에 맞지 않다. ④ 평지에 지어졌다.”라는 이유가 그것이다. 첨성대는 그 설계에서부터 건축에 이르기까지 선덕여왕의 心象과 무관하지 않다. 많은 이설이 이 부분을 집중해서 보았던 이유이다. 첨 성대는 단순하지 않다. 그 형상을 보아도 한 가지 기능만을 염두에 두지 않았고 아마도 다목적 기능을 소화해야 했을 것이다. 첨성대를 출입하는데 불편하거나 천문을 관측하는 데 좁은 공간은 바로 첨성대의 또 다른 다양한 기능을 배려했기 때문으로 봐야 한다. 따 라서 이상의 몇 가지 이유가 천문대로서의 첨성대가 부정되는 빌미가 되지 못한다. 필자는 『삼국유사』 기이편 ‘선덕왕지기삼사’의 문장 구조를 도표로 만들어 보면서 찬 자의 의도가 무엇인지를 가늠하고자 했다. 지기삼사 편 말미에 첨성대의 등장은 의외의 건축물이 소개된 것이 아니라 지기삼사 편과 아주 긴밀히 연관된 건축물이라고 본다. ‘知 幾’의 각 ‘事’의 내용과 각각의 후기는 서로 맥락이 통하고 있다는 점에서 그렇다. 선덕여왕이 예측한 날짜와 첨성대는 무슨 연관이 있을까? 그것은 첨성대의 성격 규 명에 대단히 중요한 또 하나의 실마리라고 하겠다. 당연히 선덕여왕이 예측한 ‘모년·모 월·모일’은 曆日에 대한 내역이다. 첨성대는 역일 제작과 연결된다. 역일을 제작하기 위 해서는 점성, 곧 천문 활동이 우선이다. 여왕이 자신의 죽음을 예측했기 때문에 이는 占 星과도 맥이 닿아 있다. 점성은 ‘보고, 알아서 맞추는 것’이라는 범주에서 ‘별[星]’을 매개 한 예측의 방편이다. 전통시대의 모든 역일은 다가올 날짜를 기입해 놓았고, 동시에 날짜별 점성적 성격 의 具注 내역이 빼곡히 기재되어 있었다. 역일의 대부분은 길·흉을 예단하는 점성의 내 용으로 가득 차 있다. 역일이 瞻星과 占星의 성격을 동시에 갖는 具注曆日이었던 이유이 기도 하다. 고대인들에게 날짜는 해와 달의 움직임에 따라 만들어진 시간임과 동시에 점 성적 기능도 하고 있었다. 첨성대는 曆日(날짜+점성) 제작과 관련된 천문대였다. 무엇보 다도 그 기능에서 점성적 성격이 짙다. 동시에 첨성대의 형상은 통치자의 의도가 반영되 어 건축됨으로써 다양한 목적을 함의하고 또 그 형상을 통해 그 목적을 실현시키고자 했 을 것이다. 선덕왕지기삼사편에서 소개된 첨성대는 제목을 함축한다.

영어초록

Ancient astronomy lies in the same context of astrology in its purpose. ‘Queen Seondeok’s Prophecy of Three Events (called Jigisamsa in Korean)’in 『Samguksagi』 was to show Queen Seondeok’s power to foresee the future. Thus, the substance of Cheomseongdae shown in the story is intermediated by the prophecy and categorized accordingly. Cheomseongdae introduced by leaving space, mentioning a separate note shows its strong power enough to cover the whole story of the prophecy of three events. There are lots of views that Cheomseongdae is not suitable for an astronomical observatory. The reason includes; “① Uncomfortable access ② Small space for observation. ③ Direction of the platform, window, and 井-shaped rectangular stone is not in true north and south. ④ Built on the flatland.”. Cheomseongdae is relevant to Queen Seondeok’s image from the design to actual construction. This is why quite a few different views focused on the matter. Cheomseongdae is never simple. The shape itself shows that it would not be made for just one purpose, that is, may be multi-functional. Thus, it is quite reasonable to see that the reason of uncomfortable access and small space for astronomical observation seems to have been built with the consideration of other functions except the astronomical observation. Accordingly, the reasons above mentioned have no justification to deny Cheomseongdae as an astronomical observatory. This study tried to understand what was the compiler’s purpose by making a diagram of the sentence structure of “Queen Seondeok’s Prophecy of Three Events’in Giyi, 『Samgukyusa』. The appearance of Cheomseongdae at the end of “Prophecy of Three Events’was to introduce the structure closely interrelated to “Prophecy of Three Events’n not just an unexpected structure. It is why that the story and review of each ’event’of the ‘prophecy’are interacted in their context. What is the correlation between the date Queen Seondeok foresaw and Cheomseongdae?, which can be a very important clue to define the nature of Cheomseongdae. Surely the date, ‘yyyy·mm·dd’Queen Seondeok predicted was the specification of calendar. Cheomseongdae is connected to calendar production. To make a calendar, astrological, or astronomical activities are pre-required. Queen Seondeok predicted the day of her death, which is connected to astrology. Astrology is a means for prediction by mediating ‘stars’in the category of ‘see/read, and guess/predict’. All the calendars in the traditional age had not only the dates to come, but also astrological notes by date on them. Most of the calendars were full of astrological notes or remarks to predict good or ill luck. That is why the calendar is Guju Calendar(meaning a calendar with astrological notes on) with the nature of both astronomy and astrology. For the ancients, the date functioned as both time made by the movements of the sun and the moon and astrology. Cheomseongdae was an astronomical observatory related to making a calendar(date+astrology). Above all, it shows a strong astrological characteristic. And also, during the construction, the ruler’s purpose was reflected on the shape of Cheomseongdae, which implies diverse purposes and there would be an effort to achieve the purpose through the shape. That is, Cheomseongdae introduced in ‘Queen Seondeok’s Prophecy of Three Events’implies the title itself.
