초록

이 글은 대구지역 최초로 일본군 ‘위안부’ 피해자 신고를 한 문옥주의 ‘증언들’의 서사 방식을 살펴보기 위한 것으로서, 최근 발견된 『경상매일』의 기획연재기사—대구지역 일본군 ‘위안부’ 문옥주의 육필수기 「지옥의 나날들」을 분석함으로써 문옥주의 증언이 지역일간지라는 공적 매체를 통해 서사화되는 방식을 분석한 것이다.
「지옥의 나날들」은 ‘육필수기’의 1인칭으로 서술되면서도 문옥주가 실제 구술 증언한 부분은 확연하게 차이나는 부분이 다수 있다. 「지옥의 나날들」은 문옥주의 실제 증언에는 없었던 정신대 서사를 허구적으로 재구성하면서 ‘정신대’라는 의장 아래서 일본군‘위안부’를 설명할 수 있었던 1990년대 초반 한국사회의 인식을 보여주고 있다. 또한 문옥주의 증언 중 일부를 편집하여 허구적 서사로서 전시 성폭력을 재현하는 과정에서 1980년대 이전 위안부 서사의 재현을 답습하고 있는데, 이는 지역 일간지—공적 매체가 식민지 시대 민족의 피해를 부각함으로써 국민적 경각심을 제고한다는 명분 아래 증언을 자의적으로 편집하고 허구적 서사로 재구성한 것이다.
이처럼, 「지옥의 나날들」의 서사는 1991년 김학순의 증언 이후, 일본군‘위안부’의 피해 증언이 공적 매체에 기록되는 초기 과정을 보여주고 있다. 그럼에도 「지옥의 나날들」에는 문옥주가 살았던 당대 삶터에 대한 서사를 덧붙임으로써 “일본군‘위안부’로서 문옥주” 이전에 “대구에 살았던 문옥주”의 서사를 발견할 수 있는 계기를 제공한다. 지역에서 삶터를 기반으로 한 일본군‘위안부’의 증언과 서사를 연구하는 일은 중요하다. 정대협—정의연으로 대표되는 보편적 운동뿐 아니라 그들이 놓치고 있는 피해증언자들이 살아온 삶터—지역의 서사에 주목해야 할 때이다. 일본군‘위안부’의 증언과 역사는 그들이 살아온 지역의 기억과 서사, 그리고 지역적 정체성과 연계하여 연구되어야 하며, 더불어 지역을 중심으로 진행되어온 ‘위안부’ 해결 운동의 역사 또한 함께 논의되어야 할 것이다.

영어초록

The purpose of this writing is to examine a narrative method in ‘testimonies’ of Mun Ok ju who reported the victim of ‘Japanese Military Sexual Slavery’ for the first time in Daegu area. The aim is to inquire into a method that Mun Ok ju’s testimony is narrated through the public media called a local daily newspaper, by analyzing 「Days in Hell」, which is the handwritten memoir of Mun Ok ju as a comfort woman for the Japanese army in Daegu, with regard to the planning series article of 『Gyeongsang Maeil』 that was found these days.
As 「Days in Hell」 is described in the first person of the ‘handwritten memoir’, there are many distinct differences in the actual oral testimony of Mun Ok ju. As 「Days in Hell」 reconstructs the narrative of comfort women fictionally that had not been in the actual testimony of Mun Ok ju, the perception of Korean society in the early 1990s is being shown that had been available for explaining ‘comfort women’ for the Japanese military under the band dubbed ‘Japanese military sexual slavery (comfort women).’ Also, the representation of the pre- 1980s comfort women narrative is being followed in the process of recreating the wartime sexual violence as a fictional narrative by editing some of Mun Ok ju’s testimony. Still, this is what the public media as local daily news arbitrarily edited the testimony and reconstructed it into a fictional narrative in the name of raising the public awareness through highlighting the damage to the colonial people.
In this way, the narrative in 「Days in Hell」 is demonstrating the initial process that the testimony of damage to the Japanese military ‘comfort women’ is recorded in the public media after Kim Hak sun’s testimony in 1991. Nevertheless, 「Days in Hell」 offers an opportunity available for discovering the narrative of ‘Mun Ok ju who had lived in Daegu’ prior to ‘Mun Ok ju as ‘a comfort woman’ for the Japanese forces’, by being added the narrative on the site of Mun Ok ju’s life at that time. It is important to inquire into the testimony and the narrative on the military ‘comfort women’ by Japan based on a place of life in the region. It is time to pay attention to the narrative of life’s space and region with the lives of the victims that they are missing, as well as the universal movement represented by Jeongdaehyeop(挺對協) and Jeonguiyeon(正義帶). The testominy and the history of ‘comfort women’ for the Japanese military should be researched in connection with memory, narrative and local identity in the region that they had led a life. Moreover, the history of resolving ‘comfort women’ that had been progressed centering on the region also must be discussed together.
