대순진리회 마음관 연구 서설 - 해원(解冤)과 감응(感應)을 중심으로 - (An Introduction to the Study of the View of the Mind in Daesoonjinrihoe(大巡眞理會) － Focused on Resolution of Grievances and Resonance －)

초록

이 글은 마음의 본질을 뇌의 작용으로 대체하려고 하는 현대 과학의 유물론을 반박하는 종교의 입장을 정리한다는 데에 그 목표를 두고, 그 한 사례로서 대순진리회의 마음관을 ‘해원’과 신명 ‘감응’이라는 문법을 활용하여 살핀 것이다.
대순진리회 세계관에서 마음은 그 자체로 신성하기도 하지만, 그 마음 주재 당사자의 윤리적 실천에 따라 신명이 응한다는 사실을 더욱 강조한다. 즉 대순진리회의마음관은 윤리와 영성 추구가 하나로 결합되어 있는 형태이다. 그것을 읽어내는 가장 좋은 문법이 바로 ‘해원’과 신명 ‘감응’이다.
해원과 감응이라는 문법으로 대순진리회의 마음관을 독해한 결과를 요약해보면다음과 같다. 첫째, 마음은 의지를 일으키는 기관으로 규정된다. 다만 마음을 갖는주체가 인간만이 아니라 천지의 모든 신명들, 심지어 동물들에게까지 확장되어 있다는 점, 그리고 그 의지는 해원 관념과 연결됨으로써 대순진리회 수행의 근거로 제시된다는 점에서 특징적이다.
둘째, 대순진리회는 마음을 욕망을 일으키는 기관으로 규정하고, 잘못된 욕망인허욕으로써 양심이 사심으로 변질되지 않도록 전념하라고 가르친다. 허욕은 추상적인 관념으로 끝나지 않고 온갖 죄악들을 만들어낸다. 그러므로 허욕이 발동하지 않도록 경계해야 하고, 상생의 마음으로써 욕망의 문제를 풀어나가야 한다고 말한다.
셋째, 마음은 인간의 의지에 따라 외재적 신명이 감응하는 기관으로 해명된다. 이것은 기존 동양전통의 마음담론에서는 찾아볼 수 없는 독특한 주장이다. 이 규정은 마음의 주체와 객체 이중성 문제를 푸는 열쇠가 된다. 아울러 정신통일의 측면에서 마음과 영[心靈]이 어떻게 통합되는 것인지 그 원리를 보여주고, 나아가서는 무자기(無自欺)나 안심(安心), 안신(安身), 시련(試鍊), 최고신에 대한 신앙 등 대순진리회의 여러 수행의 근거로 작용한다.
이상의 사실로부터 대순진리회 세계관에서는 신명의 존재를 인정하지 않는 현대과학의 마음 접근법은 받아들여지지 않을 것이라고 말할 수 있다. 특히, 현대의 문명이 물질에 치우쳐 인류가 교만에 빠졌고 그것이 세상 파멸의 원인이 되었다고 보는 게 대순진리회의 문제의식이므로, 대순진리회의 세계관에서는 형이상학적 개념인 마음을 물질인 뇌, 혹은 뇌와 심장에 종속시키는 행위는 물질문명에 치우친 현대과학의 병폐인 것으로 진단될 것이다.

영어초록

This paper aims to apprehend the position of religion which refutes materialism of the contemporary science that is prone to replacing nature of mind with functions of brain. In addition, it also tries to understand the concept of mind in Daesoonjinrihoe by utilizing mechanism of ‘resolution of grievances’ and ‘resonance.’ Daesoonjinrihoe focuses on ‘resolution of grievances’ and ‘resonance,’ however, it is not intended to be unified with a specific god or to acquire particular luck by mind.
Mind itself is sacred in the outlook of Daesoonjinrihoe, but emphasizes the fact that divine beings respond according to ethical practice of the mind owner. That is, the concept of mind in Daesoonjinrihoe is a combination of morality and spiritual pursuit. To analyze this, ‘resolution of grievances’ and ‘resonance’ with divine beings are the best tools. They are essential in term of depicting how the concept of mind in Daesoonjinrihoe relates with cultivation practice of mind.
The view of the mind by resolution of grievances and resonance can be summarized as follows: first, mind is defined as an organ to keep up one’s will. Its meaning extends to not only human beings but also divine beings in the universe even as well as animals. It is very unique since the will is related to perspective on resolution of grievance and suggested as a basis of cultivation practice in Daesoonjinrihoe.
Secondly, the mind is an apparatus that brings up emotional arousal. Thus, Daesoonjinrihoe teaches man to keep his consciousness. Vain desire is not the abstract perspective, but makes all kinds of evil and sins. In this regard, man should watch himself not to evoke vain desire and resolve its related problems by mutual beneficence.
Thirdly, the mind is an apparatus that resonates with extrinsic divine beings by human will, which is very unique that it is not found in the typical discourse regarding mind in the traditional Eastern custom. It becomes a principle to solve the duplicity problem in terms of the subject and object. Furthermore, the argument is to show how heart-mind and spirit are integrated at the perspective on oneness of mind and to work on a basis of practical cultivation such as guarding against self-deception, quieting the mind, quieting the body, hardships, faith in the supreme god and so on.
From the facts mentioned above, the mind approach of the contemporary science which neglects the existence of divine being is not accepted in the perspective of Daesoonjinrihoe. Especially, Daesoonjinrihoe is aware of the idea that the humankind is full of arrogance due to materialism, which has been attributed to the apocalypse. Thus, the attempt to subordinate the mind of metaphysical concept to a brain, namely substance, or a brain and a heart should be perceived as a malady of material-oriented contemporary science.
