강릉 경포대의 역사적 의미와 가치 (Historical meaning and value of KyongPoTae(鏡浦臺) in Gangneung)

초록

과거나 지금이나 변하지 않은 것은 경포대 앞에 펼쳐져 있는 경포호이다. 이 호수의 둘레는 12㎞에서 8㎞에 이르렀다. 석호인 경포호 주변에는 울창한 송림이 있으며, 그 너머로는 푸른 동해바다가 있다. 이에 경포대는 활달한 동해를 한눈에 조망할 수 있는 웅장하고 화려한 우리나라의 대표적 누대 건축물 중에 하나이다.
특히 경포호수는 구슬을 갈아 낸 것처럼 맑고, 거울에 비칠 정도로 청아하고 고와서 경호(鏡湖)또는 감호(鑑湖)라 불렀다. 경포호수는 어질고 온화하다. 그리고 풍랑이 칠 때의 경포호수의 모습은꿋꿋함을 자랑하는 선비의 자태와 같다. 따라서 경포호수는 군자호(君子湖) 또는 현호([賢湖]－어진호수라는 뜻)라고 불리기도 했다. 이러한 점은 경포대가 품고 있는 또 다른 자연적이며 인문적 가치라 할 수 있다.
경포대는 안렴사 박숙이 고려 충숙왕 13년(1326) 인월사(印月寺) 터 부근에 창건하였다. 그리고조선 중종때 현재의 자리로 옮겨지었다. 이후 강릉대도호부사의 관심과 지원으로 여러 번 중수 과정을 거쳐 지금까지 이어지고 있다.
경포대는 풍류를 즐기는 곳이기도 하지만 사람들이 달, 호수, 바다, 송림을 조망함으로써 심성을가다듬고 수양하던 곳이다. 강릉 지역 사람들은 평온함의 상징으로 경포대를 인식하였고, 방문자들은 심성을 수양하던 마음의 안식처로 생각하였다.
조선중기 이전에 경포대에는 온방(溫房)과 양실(涼室)이 만들어졌었다고 한다. 그런데 인조 때 강릉부사 이명준은 방문자들이 절경에 심취하여 너무 오랫동안 그곳에 머물렀기 때문에 많은 폐단들이발생하였다고 하여 그 방을 철거하였다. 이와 같은 조치를 취한 배경은 근본적으로 지방관리의 위엄을 재정립함과 동시에 전란과 자연재해 등으로 인한 백성들의 고충이 심각한 상황에서 관리들의 청렴성을 강조함과 동시에 지배 계층의 퇴폐적 문화 요소의 척결을 통한 대민안정화를 위함이었다.
또 경포대 내부의 남쪽과 북쪽에 각각 층루 한 칸씩을 만들었는데, 남쪽은 득월헌(得月軒), 북쪽은 후선함(候仙檻)이라고 하였다. 득월헌과 후선함은 밝음[明]과 무욕(無慾)의 근본을 추구하고자 만들었다고 한다. 경포대에 층루를 만든 상징적 이유는 경포대에서 조망한 주변의 우수한 경관을 통해 이곳을 내방하는 사람들에게 성의로써 사물을 제어하고, 청렴으로 자신을 단속하고. 공심으로 일을 처리하고. 아랫사람을 위엄 있게 다스릴 수 있는 심성을 수양하도록 하고자 함이었다.
위의 사람을 다스리는 네가지 방법에 의거하여 강릉지역에 부임한 부사들은 경포대의 흥망을 본인들의 치적과 대민안정화의 상징으로 활용하였다. 강릉사람들은 경포대가 흥성하냐 쓸쓸하냐를 보고 우리 백성들이 편안한지 편안하지 않은지를 점친다고 말하였다. 관원들이 투호하는 병과 화살을갖추거나 풍악을 이끌고 나와 이 경포대에 와서 놀기라도 하면, 그런 때에는 반드시 조야가 편안하고 날씨 또한 순조로워서 백성들 역시 노래하고 즐기면서 걱정스러운 기색이 없었다고 한다.
경포대의 역사적 의미와 가치는 시공간적 변화에 따라 고대부터 현재까지도 사람들에게 조화미를 겸비한 우수한 문화유산이다. 또 사람들은 올바른 인성 함양의 장소로 경포대를 인식하였다. 경포대는 시간과 역사의 변화와 함께하였으므로, 정지된 문화유산이 아니고 시간과 공간의 변화와 관련된 문화유산이다. 경포대는 강릉지역 사회의 사회적, 정치적 필요에 따라 존재 형태가 변형되어왔으며, 이러한 변화 과정에 참된 경포대의 역사적 의미와 가치가 스며있다고 할 수 있다.

KyongPoTae(鏡浦臺) does not go against the providence of the Mother Nature. To KyongPoTae circumference is a KyongPo lake which is the big lake. The circumference of this lake reached to 8㎞from 12㎞. And the lake as SokHo(潟湖)-the sandy plain or sand plain cut off the part of the ocean from the seashore and the lake which made-is Songlim(松林) which is dense with the circumference.
Consequently KyongPoTae is a representative successive generation building of our country which gorgeous is magnificent will be able to have a distant view east sea which is generous in look is.
The KyongPo lake(鏡浦湖) will change the glass beads specially and like, elegance KyongPo lake did at the degree which in the mirror will shine and to be KyongHo(鏡湖) or GamHo(鑑湖) called.
The KyongPo lake to be gentle is mild. And with the wind hits time, the features of The KyongPo lake lake being strong, figure of the scholar who is proud and is same. Consequently The KyongPo lake the true gentleman lake(君子湖) as HynHo(賢湖)-gentle good royal meal did intention-called. The KyongPoTae established of Pakswuk(朴淑) in the Korea dynasty Ch'ungsuk King(忠肅王) 13 year(1326) near of the In Wol Sa (印月寺). And at the time of the Chungjong(中宗) King in Choson dynasty came to move with the place of present time. Gangneung(江陵) area people recognized the KyongPoTae with symbol of the security, the visitors thought at the rest place of the mind which cultivates a mind.
The old KyongPoTae came to make with the warm room(溫房) and cold room(凉室). The many evils occurred in the room, because of the visitors were fascinated by the way in the magnificent view and too for a long time in order to stay to that place. Lee myong Jun(李命俊)Lived the Gangneung Pusa(江陵府使) of the Injo(仁祖) King in Choson dynasty removed the room with the reason. Also the people recognized KyongPoTae at place of self-cultivation. The KyongPoTae does with change of time and history, not to be the cultural heritage which stands still, is a cultural heritage which with the change of time and space relates.
