未堂 후기시에 나타난 우주적 시간의식 − 『늙은 떠돌이의 시』를 중심으로 − (Universal Time Consciousness Expressed in the Latter Period of Midang's Poems ― based on 『The Poems of Old Wanderer』)

초록

한국 현대시의 대표적인 시인인 미당(未堂) 서정주는 1936년 <동아일보> 신춘문예로 등단한 이후 2000년 타계할 때까지 15권을 시집을 상재했다. 65년에 이르는 시력(詩歷) 동안 1천여 편의 시를 창작하여 시단의 중심에서 많은 관심을 받았으며, 그의 시세계에 대한 탐구도 지속적으로 이루어져 왔다.
그러나 미당에 대한 연구는 첫시집 『화사집(花蛇集)』부터 여섯 번째 시집 『질마재 신화』까지 전기와 중기에 해당하는 시편들에 집중되어 있다. 한 시인의 시세계는 그의 작품 전체를 아울러 평가해야 하며, 특히 미당의 경우 우리 시단에 전례없는 시적 성취도를 보여준 시인이기에 나머지 9권의 시집에 대한 평가를 유보할 수 없다.
본고에서는 미당의 후기시 중에서도 말기에 해당하는 『늙은 떠돌이의 시』(1993)에 나타난 시간 이미지를 다루었다. 지금까지 미당의 시간의식은 중기시를 중심으로 논의되어왔다. 따라서 기 발표된 논문들을 통해 중기시의 시간의식을 고찰한 후, 『늙은 떠돌이의 시』에 형상화된 시간을 분석하여 후기시에 나타난 시간의식이 중기시와 어떠한 유기적 연관성을 맺고 있는지 살펴보았다.
『늙은 떠돌이의 시』는 유년의 기억을 바탕으로 ‘내 어렸을 적의 시간들’을 복원하고 있다. 유년의 경험은 시청각적인 시간 이미지로 발현되어 과거의 시간을 다시 환기시키고 있는데, 청각이나 시각에 의해 지각되는 것은 감각적 경험세계이다. 계량화되고 수량화되지 않은 경험적 시간이 청각이나 시각적 이미지로 환치되어 유년시절의 배경으로 떠오르고 있다. 새들과 개구리의 울음소리, 풋감이 떨어지고 감꽃이 피고 지는 것은 모두 경험적 시간으로서 시인의 주관적 시간의식을 구성하고 있음을 볼 수 있었다.
그런데 『늙은 떠돌이의 시』에 나타난 시청각적 이미지들은 대부분 자연물로서, 뻐꾹새, 쑥국새, 소쩍새, 개구리의 울음소리며, 풋감과 감꽃, 박꽃, 송편 등이 시간의 등가물(等價物)로서 등장한다. 이것은 시계와 달력으로 수량화된 물리적인 시간이 아닌, 세계를 구성하는 생명현상과 자연현상을 우주라는 거대한 시간 저장고에 넣어두고, 유년시절의 회상을 통한 경험적 시간으로 현재화하고 있는 것이다. 이 우주적 시간은 날짜나 시간적 지표가 없다는 점에서, 또 언제든지 현재화할 수 있다는 점에서 영구적이며 무시간적이라 할 수 있다.
미당의 중기시에 나타난 시간의식은 ‘영원주의’로 대표되며, 그것은 영원을 향하는 초월적인 시간이 아니라 과거-현재-미래로 이어지는 지속적인 시간에서 벗어난 ‘무시간성’의 특성을 가지고 있다. 이러한 점에서 미당의 중기시와 후기시에 나타난 시간의식은 ‘무시간적인 영원성’을 공통적 특질로 상정할 수 있으며, 중기와 후기로 이어지는 시세계의 유기적 연관성을 파악할 수 있다.
그러나 중기시는 ‘신라’라는 거대한 역사적 공간이나 ‘질마재’라는 신화화된 공간을 시간의식의 발원지로 삼고 있는 데 반해, 후기시는 유년시절의 공간을 배경으로 하는 시청각적 이미지들이 시간의식의 주축을 이루고 있다. 즉 중기시에서의 역사와 신화라는 거시적 시간이 후기시에 이르러 유년이라는 미시적 시간으로 축소되어 나타나고 있음을 볼 수 있다.

영어초록

Midang Seo, Jeong Ju, one of the best poet of modern poems in Korea, made a literary debut through <DongA Ilbo> in 1936 and published 15 poetry until he died in 2000. He had spotlight in Poetical Circles by making about 1,000 poets for 65 years of career and the studies about his poetry have been made continuous.
However, the studies about Midang have focused on the first poetry 『Hwasajip(花蛇集)』 to Sixth poetry 『The Jilmajae Myth』 in the early and middle period of his poetry. Poetic world of a poet should be evaluated by one's whole works, especially, since Midang reached unprecedented poetic achievement in our poetical circle, the other 9 poetry should be evaluated as well.
In this study, the time image expressed in 『The Poems of Old Wanderer』(1993)written at the end of the latter period was dealt with. Until now, Midang's time consciousness has been discussed based on the poets in the middle period. Therefore, we tried to find what kind of organic relationship does the time consciousness have with the poets in the middle period by studying the time consciousness of the middle period poems through the published thesis and analyzing the time embodied in 『The Poems of Old Wanderer.』.
『The Poems of Old Wanderer』 restores' The time of my childhood" based on the memory of childhood. The experience of childhood is expressed in visual and auditory time image and awakens the past time. Sensorial experience means somethings sensed by the sense of hearing as well as vision. Unquantified empirical time which is converted into visual and auditory images is reminded as the background of childhood. It is shown that cry of birds as well as frogs, fallen unripe persimmons, and blossoming persimmons flowers are empirical time consist of poet's subjective time consciousness as empirical time.
However, visual and auditory images expressed in 『The Poems of Old Wanderer』 are mostly natural objects and cry of a cuckoo, a scops owl, and a frog, green persimmons, persimmons flower, gourd flowers, and Songpyon appears as an equivalent for time. This is not the physical and objective time quantified by a clock and a calendar and becomes the present time by empirical time through childhood recollection, storing life and nature phenomena in a huge time storehouse of universe. The universal time can be considered to be permanent and non-time nature in that it has no time-related index and becomes the present time any time.
Time consciousness expressed in the middle age of Midang is represented as " eternalism", which has "non-time" nature out of continuous time from past to present and present to future, not transcendent time toward eternality. In this respect, the time consciousness expressed in the poets of both the middle and latter period of Midang has "non-time eternalism".
However, the poems written in the middle period take the huge historical space of Shilla or mythified space, Jilmajae, as starting point of time consciousness, meanwhile the poems written in the latter period mainly consist of visual and auditory images with background of childhood space. In other words, it is shown that macroscopic time like history and myth in the middle period is reduced to microscopic time like childhood in the latter period.
