제주도 처녀당 본풀이에 나타난 서사 구조와 제의 양상 (The Narrative Structure and the Ritual Aspects in of Jeju)

초록

이 글의 목적은 제주도 ‘처녀당’의 면모를 밝히는 것이다. 이를 위해 처녀당 본풀이에 나타난 서사 구조를 유형화하고, 제의 양상을 파악하였다. 제주도 처녀당 본풀이는 처녀에게 제의를 올리는 이유를 밝힌 제향경위담이 서사의 주를 이룬다. 이는 <원혼－맞이－좌정>으로 구조화되며, ‘원혼맞이형’이라 명명한다. 또한 처녀 원혼의 억울함과 분노가 신앙민에게 흉험으로 표출되는 유형이 있는데, 이를 구조화하면, <원혼→흉험→해원(解冤)→좌정>으로 ‘해원요구형’이라 하였다. 이에 ‘원혼맞이형’의 서사 구조는 처녀당 본풀이에 공통적으로 드러나는 기본형이며, ‘해원요구형’은 처녀 원혼의 내력과 적극적인 신원(伸冤)의 서사가 결합된 변이형이라 할 수 있다.
‘원혼맞이형’과 ‘해원요구형’은 제의 양상 또한 다르다. ‘원혼맞이형’은 신앙민의 성별에 따라 차이를 드러낸다. 우선 ‘여성 신앙민’이 제향하는 경우는 안정된 정착을 위한 정착제의로서 본향당제가 주를 이루는데, <마라리 처녀당>, <금악리 아미당> 등에 나타난다. 한편, ‘남성과의 결합’을 원하는 처녀 신격을 맞이하는 경우가 <하원 비바리당> 일대에서 ‘수북대기 턺’과 같은 모의성행위 의례로 전승된다.
둘째는 ‘남성 신앙민’이 주체가 되어 제향하는 경우로 향교와 관아를 중심으로 치러지던 ‘여제(厲祭)’를 무속적으로 수용하여 의례화한 ‘유무(儒巫) 습합제의’가 있다. 대정향교가 있는 사계리에 전해지는 <사계리 ᄀᆞᆯ르락당>본풀이가 대표적인 예이다.
‘해원요구형’은 치병제의로 나타난다. 이는 병의 근원이 처녀 원혼이 준 흉험 때문이라는 인식에서 출발하여, 처녀 원혼의 표상인 방울방울 맺힌 병을 잘 풀어내어야 흉험이 소멸된다는 믿음으로 이어진다. 대표적으로 <토산 알당>의 ‘방울풂’ 의례에 나타난다.
이로써 제주도 처녀당 본풀이에 나타난 서사 구조와 제의 양상은 세 가지로 유형화되면서, 유기적으로 결합되어 있음을 보여준다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to reveal the aspects of ‘Chenyeodang’ of Jeju. For this purpose, the narrative structures presented in Bonpuri of Chenyeodang were categorized and their ritual aspects have been analyzed. In Bonpuri of ‘Chenyeodang’ of Jeju, the narrative presented as ‘jehyanggeogwidam’ mainly features the reasons for praying to chenyeo. This can be structured as <vindictive ghosts→greeting vindictive ghosts→settlement> and be named ‘the type with greeting vindictive ghosts’. Along with this type, there is another type that can be characterized as ‘the type with requiring solace’ where the anger and resentment of chenyeo is expressed to believers as maliciousness. As its name suggests, this type can be organized as <vindictive ghosts→maliciousness→solace→settlement>.
Accordingly, the narrative structure of ‘the type with greeting vindictive ghosts’ is the basic form commonly presented in Bonpuri of ‘Chenyeodang’. On the other hand, ‘The type with requiring solace’ is the variation of combining the history of chenyeo, the vindictive ghost, with the narrative of positive redress of grievance Ritual aspects also differ between ‘the type with greeting vindictive ghosts’ and ‘the type with requiring solace’. ‘The type with greeting vindictive ghosts’ presents the difference depending on the gender of a believer. First of all, Some rituals whose type is greeting vindictive ghosts are performed mainly as ‘Bonhyangdang’ ritual, a settling ritual for safe settlement, which is seen in ‘Mararichenyeodang’ and ‘Geumakriamidang’ when a female believer is to settle. Meanwhile, greeting a female ghost desiring ‘sexual union with a man’ have been transmitted in the ‘Hawonbibaridang’ area as rituals featuring mock intercourse.
Secondly, when a male believer is to settle, the rituals can be characterized as ‘rituals blending Confucianism and shamanism’ which seems to have been ritualized by shamanistically adopting rituals held mainly by hyanggyo and the domestic government office. ‘Sagyerikanuerakdangbonpuri’, which has been transmitted in Sagyeri where Daejeong hyanggyo is situated, is a notable example.
The ritual aspect of ‘the type with requiring solace’ can be said to be a healing ritual. Namely, since there is perception that maliciousness that vindictive ghosts generate is a cause of a disease prevalent among people of the village, this perception leads to the belief that maliciousness would vanish if a droplet-like rash which is the actualization of chenyeo, the vindictive ghost, is healed.
Consequently, it is proven that the narrative structure and the ritual aspects in ‘Chenyeodangbonpuri’ can be categorized as three different types, and these types are conjoined organically.
