上海 국민대표회의 개최지 三一堂 위치 고증 (Verification of the Historical Site(三一堂) of Shanghai Korean National Convention)

초록

1920년대 상해 프랑스조계 한인 기독교 예배당 ‘三一堂’(弎弌堂, the Trinity Church)은 교회 본연의 종교활동 외에도 상해 독립운동진영, 교민사회의 수많은 집회와 행사가 열려 민족의 정체성을 확인하고 공동체의식을 다지던 곳이었다. 특히 1923년 전반기 국내외의 백여 명에 달하는 민족운동진영 지도자들이 모여 대한민국 임시정부의 운명과 민족운동의 전망을 토론하던 國民代表會議가 열렸던 역사적인 곳이었다.
그러므로 상해 삼일당의 위치를 확인하려는 노력은 한중수교 초기부터 이루어졌다. 1990년대 중반 상해 프랑스조계 삼일당은 公共租界 江西路의 영국 聖公會 교당인 ‘聖三一堂’(the Holy Trinity Cathedra1)으로 잘못 알려지기도 했다. 최근 상해 復旦大學 孫科志 교수는 삼일당을 포함한 국민대표회의의 주요 유적지의 위치를 고증한 논문을 발표하였다. 손교수는 이 논문에서 한국독립운동에서 특별한 의미를 지니고 있는 삼일당의 위치 고증을 시도하였다. 그러나 손교수는 삼일당이 있었던 八仙橋街의 위치만 찾았을뿐 삼일당이 팔선교가의 어디에 있었는지는 밝히지 못했다.
당시 문헌들에 의하면, 삼일당은 웨이케이街(Rue du Weikwei) 즉 寧興街 262호에 있었다. 즉 삼일당은 영흥가와 八仙橋街가 교차하는 지점에 위치해 있었다. 이러한 지리 정보들을 바탕으로 지도상에서 삼일당을 찾아 볼 수 있다. 1917년 商務印書館에서 제작한 「上海法國舊租界分圖」에는 팔선교가와 영흥가가 교차하는 지점에 삼일당이 선명하게 표기되어 있다.
그러나 삼일당은 1927년 이후 본당인 모이당이 늘어나는 신도들을 수용하기 위해 새로운 교당을 신축하면서 그 수명을 다하게 되었다. 삼일당이 철거된 자리에는 상가건물과 주택단지가 세워졌다. 그러므로 삼일당은 그이후의 지도에는 더 이상 나타나지 않았으며 사람들의 기억으로부터도 망각되었던 것이다.

영어초록

The Trinity Church, a Korean Protestant church in the French Concession in the 1920's, is the site where countless rallies and events were held by the independence movement groups and Korean nationals in Shanghai along with its inherent religious congregations, thereby reminding them of their ethnic identity and strengthening the sense of community. In the first half of 1923, especially, some hundred leaders from the nationalist movement group gathered here to convene the historic Korean National Convention and discussed the fate of the Korean Provisional Government and the prospect of the nationalist movement.
Therefore it can be said the efforts to identify the exact location of the Trinity Church have been made beginning in the early days after the establishment of the diplomatic relations between China and Korea. In the mid 1990's, the Holy Trinity Cathedral, an Anglican Church in the International Settlement located in Jiangxi Road had once been wrongly known as the Trinity Church in the French Concession. Recently, Prof. Sun Kezhi in the Fudan University published a thesis in which he verified the locations of the key relics associated with the Korean National Convention including the Trinity Church. Prof. Sun attempted to identify the exact location of the Trinity Church which has an extraordinary significance in the history of the Korean independence movement. But he succeeded only in locating the Palicao Road where the Trinity Church used to stand but failed to locate exactly in which block of the Palicao Road the Trinity Church was located.
According to the archived materials, the Trinity Church used to stand in Rue du Weikwei or 262 Nixing Road on the present map. We can locate the Trinity Church on the map today based on the said pieces of geographical information. The location of the Trinity Church is clearly marked on the intersection where the Palicao Road and Nixing Road crosses according to an old Shanghai map drawn by ShangWuYinShuguan in 1917.
However, the Trinity Church saw its demise in 1927 when the Muer Church, its mother church, decided to build a new church building to accommodate an increasing number of faithful devotees. Shops and residential blocks were built in the place where the Trinity Church was demolished. Therefore, the Trinity Church has since never been marked in any other maps ever since the demolition, thereby forgotten by the people.
