오태석 희곡 '가효당(佳孝堂)' 소고(小考) (A Study on the Oh Tae-seok's Drama 'Gahyodang(佳孝堂)')

초록

이 글은 1977년 연세대학교 신문 『연세춘추』에 발표되었던 오태석의 희곡을 소개하고 해석적으로 분석한 것이다. 본고는 오태석이 『한중록』과 임오화변의 역사를 집단의 무의식인 신화로 보고 극적 상상력으로 희곡을 구성한 극작법에 주목했다. 오태석은 이 희곡에서 익숙한 역사를 활용하여 1970년대라는 에피스테메(episteme)로 텍스트를 구성했다. 극작가가 유형지에 갇힌 것처럼 느꼈던 당대사회의 지배적인 분위기는 이 희곡을 구성하는 시대개념이 되었다. 필자는 이같은 시대인식을 근거로 <가효당>이 1970년대 청년 세대를 독자 내지는 관객으로 상정하고 그들의 사유와 반응방식을 염두에 둔 희곡으로 이해했다. 따라서 본고는 이 희곡이 극작가 고안한 고유의 리듬에 근거한 구성과 익숙한 역사를 시대감각에 근거하여 형상화한 극작법을 소개해 보고자 한다.
근본적으로 희곡은 상연과 결부된 텍스트이지만, 본고에서는 거꾸로 이 희곡의 미학적 기호들을 통해 오태석의 극작법에 대해 서술해 보았다. 연극의 형식은 경험의 형태에 근거한다. 그런 점에서 연구자는 오태석이 <가효당>을 임오화변을 기억하는 홍씨의 제의행위로 구성한 이 연극의 형식에서 두 가지 현실을 읽었다. <가효당>은 사도세자빈 홍씨가 임오화변을 기억하는 『한중록』의 서사에 기대어 치유와 위로의 굿을 홍씨가 수행하는 희곡 텍스트다. 이 희곡은 임오화변의 상황 속에서 남편의 죽음을 외면하고 살아남은 혜경궁의 정서와 심리에 의한 임오화변의 상황이 제의적인 감각으로 구성되었다. 홍씨의 말과 행위로 구성된 이 희곡의 구조와 언어형식은 죄의식을 대변하는 장치역할을 한다. <가효당>은 굿이라는 제의적인 형식의 희곡이지만, 기괴한 꿈의 연극처럼 몽환적이다. 그것은 사도세자의 광기에 찬 행위의 불연속적인 반복이 희곡의 불안한 정서를 꼴라쥬처럼 구성되는 극작법 때문이다. 이 희곡은 굿을 어떻게 무대언어와 행위로 수행하느냐에 따라 조형적인 미학의 연출가능성이 열려 있다. 필자가 이 희곡에서 읽은 것은 날카로운 비명을 지르는 청춘세대 혹은 1970년 시대의 모습을 사도세자의 행위모델에 투사한 점이다. 그리고 1970년대 후반 오태석이 극작술을 구성하면서 고려했던 소극장 중심의 비극장적 연극 환경 영향도 크다. 규모가 작아 일인극이 유행하였던 극장문화 안에서 홍씨가 고수이자 사도세자의 치유 굿을 주관하는 메타드라마 희곡은 극작가의 현실적인 선택으로 구성된 극작법이다. <가효당>은 비 극장적인 공간, 빈 공간에서 비약적인 연행 행위와 구조로 극적 현실과 비현실을 오가는 극장면으로 구성되었다. 따라서 희곡에서 고수와 소리꾼, 혹은 무당과 불려진 죽은 존재의 굿은 소극장 무대에서 춤극[二人舞]으로 수행할 수 있는 상연을 연상해 볼 수 있다. 필자는 이런 희곡 창작 배경을 근거로 독자가 이 희곡을 해원(解冤)의 극적 리듬과 감각 안에서 수용할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다. 오태석은 <가효당>에서 임오화변의 사건이 연대기적 순서에 따라 모사적(模寫的) 상황을 보여주는 것이 아니라 혜경궁 홍씨의 환상․꿈․환각․감추어진 욕망․공포를 빌려 사도세자를 비롯한 망령들의 재현으로 희곡을 구성했다. 본고는 오태석이 말하는 당시 시대상황을 ‘내적 현실로 조우’하도록 역사를 비극적 우화처럼 응용한 극작법에 대해 서술한 것임을 밝힌다.

영어초록

This article introduces and analyzes Oh Tae-seok's drama <Gahyodang(佳孝堂)>. <Gahyodang(佳孝堂)> is a play by Oh Tae-seok, which was published in 1977 in Yonsei University Newspaper 『Yonsei-chunchu』. In this article, we introduced and analyzed drama that was never performed. This drama can confirm the dramatic method of composing narrative and language of history text called 『Hanjungrok(閑中錄)』 as the theater language.
Fundamentally, play is a text associated with the performance. However, in this paper, we have described the dramatic method of Oh Tae-seok through the aesthetic symbols of this play. Especially since I experienced directing in the small theater space of the 1970s warehouse, I interpreted the drama with the theater space familiar to the playwright in mind. As a dramatist, he experienced directing in a small theater space of a warehouse in the 1970s, so he interpreted the plays with the theater space in mind. This play, lacking continuity of the scene, was influenced by the theater environment which was utilized as various experiment space without being restricted by the stage limit. For that reason, it is possible to interpret the space of the palace called ‘Gahyodang(佳孝堂)’ as Hong's psychological space. Above all, a mental attitude representing the 1970s period was reflected in scene arrangement and historical space. The mental attitude is the anxiety, fear, emotion, and thought of the era when the playwright recognized it. In this context, I tried to understand and analyze the drama <Gahyodang(佳孝堂)> in the 1970s. The fact that the plaintiff was published in 1977 as a university newspaper is a basis for the researcher to interpret the drama in a stereoscopic way with the possibility of stage production based on the audience and sympathy.
The form of the play is based on the form of experience. Therefore, I read two realities in Oh Tae-seok's play. First, the social image of the 1970s, when the drama was announced, was expressed in the form of a play and the reality of the theater stage reflected in this play. On the basis of this, in this study, I interpreted the meaning of the form of the stage direction which the form of the dramatical expression of this play and the form of the drama implied. The dramatic image of this play reflected the emotions and feelings of Hong who survived her husband's death. The ritual image of this play reflected the emotions and feelings of Hye Kyung, who survived her husband's death. Therefore, the structure and form of this play, composed of the words and actions of Hong who survived, represents the sense of guilt. The guilty conscience constituted the structure of drama as a ritual play that comforts the death of her husband. Therefore, the reader can understand this drama with the dramatic rhythm and sense of the sea, expressing the despair and anger of the dead husband in the structure of the drama in which Hong performs the shaman proposal.
In this paper, I would like to introduce the characteristics of the play listed above as a dramatic method of <Gahyodang(佳孝堂)>. The reason was based on the time and society in which this play was published, and the theater space familiar to the media, the dramatist, and the audience.
