초록

생애담은 과거의 기억을 바탕으로 구술자에 의해 구성된 서사이다. 이 논문은 이와 같은 생애담의 특성에 주목하여 한 개인이 자신의 생애담을 구술하는 과정에서 적극적으로 구성ㆍ재현하고자 하는 정체성과 자기인식의 근간, 그리고 그것을 바탕으로 개인이 형성한 사회적 관계망의 특성을 확인하는 데 목적을 두었다. 그에 따라 역촌에 거주하는 반가 출신 여성의 생애담 구술에서 드러나는 정체성 재현의 실질적 면모가 출생지 구분과 과거의 신분적 위상, 그리고 경제적 여유와 반가 며느리로서 의례와 일상에 관한 경험, 배움으로 대변되는 지적 경험과 실천, 외지에서의 리더십 경험을 통해 구체적이고 실질적인 양상으로 드러난다는 것을 확인했다. 이러한 정체성 재현의 근간은 구술자가 과거에 경험했던 신분적ㆍ경제적 우위에 있으며 외부인과의 접촉 속에서 이 부분이 집중적으로 부각되는 것은 생애담의 구술자가 그것을 자기주도적으로 재편하려 의도하기 때문이다. 이렇게 구술자가 과거에 유효했던 사회적 기준과 구별의 관점을 현재의 생애담 구술 과정에서 구체화하고 이를 통해 자기인식을 더욱 공고히 하는 행위는 생애담에 관한 주도적 재편과 정체성 재현의 적극적 움직임이라고 할 수 있다.

영어초록

Narratives of lifetime experiences are those which are composed by speakers based on their past memories. Paying attention to the characteristics of lifetime experience narratives, this study is intended to find the identity which a woman from a noble family tried to compose and represent actively in the course of making narratives of her lifetime experiences. This study also has investigated the base of self-awareness from the woman, and the characteristics of the social networks which were created based on her identity and self-awareness. The study has found that the factual aspects of identity representation which the woman shows in the course of making narratives of her lifetime experiences are concrete and substantial. These aspects are shown through the distinction of her birth place, her past social status, her economic affluence, her intellectual experiences such as rituals, everyday lives and learning that she went through as a landlady of a noble family, and her experience of leadership in other places. Such identity representation is highlighted when the superiority of her past social and economic status is emphasized. In particular, when an outsider (the researcher of this study) is involved, her past experience stands out intensively. This is because the narrator from a noble family reorganizes her lifetime experiences in her own way, and makes use of such elements as principal bases. The narrator demonstrates her past valid social status and the difference resulting from the status in the course of making narratives of her lifetime experience. This act of the narrator expresses her will to intensify her self-awareness more strongly at this moment, and reflects the intention of reestablishing her own identity distinguishable from those of others based on her past.
