초록

한․일 괴담에서 여성 원귀를 생성하는 가장 큰 동인은 강간, 상사(想思), 애정의 배신, 음행(淫行)의 누명 같은 섹슈얼리티와 관련되어 있다. 본고는 근세 시기 한일 여성 원귀담을 주로 여성 원귀의 생성 원리와 섹슈얼리티라는 관점에서 비교 고찰함으로써 양국 여성 원귀담의 특질을 파악하고자 하였다.
한국과 일본의 괴담에서 거절당한 여성의 구애는 원귀를 생성하는 강력한 동인으로 작용하는데, 이런 원귀는 뱀의 형상으로 나타나는 경우가 많다. 한국의 ‘구애 거절형’ 설화에는 여성의 성적 욕망에 대한 측은지심과 함께 성적 자유를 향한 남성의 은밀한 욕망이 공존한다. 이에 비해 일본의 괴담은 여성과 뱀에 대한 근친성을 부각시키고 애욕을 악마화하는 경향이 뚜렷한데, 그만큼 여성 정욕에 대한 혐오감을 배가시킨다. 일본 근세 괴담에서 남성에게 배신당하고 질투로 원귀가 된 이야기는 여성 원귀담의 주류를 이룬다. 한국의 경우 조선시대 여성에게 강요된 정절관념과 순결에 대한 강박은 성폭행과 음행누명에 의한 원귀서사를 대량 생산해 낸다. 한편, 섹슈얼리티와 관련한 한국의 거의 모든 여귀가 처녀 귀신인데 반해 일본은 기혼여성의 원혼이 주류를 이룬다. 한국 원귀담에서는 순결하고 착한 처녀의 몸일수록 더 강력한 위력을 지니며 해원과 진혼의 혜택을 받을 확률이 높아지는 데 비해, 일본의 경우 처녀성은 고려의 대상이 아니며 악독한 품성의 여성이 원귀로 귀환하는 경우가 많다.

영어초록

The powerful motivators for creating female vengeful ghosts in Korean and Japanese ghost stories is related to sexuality such as rape, lovesickness, betrayal, and adultery. This goal of this paper is to compare and review the female vengeful ghosts in Korean and Japanese ghost stories during modern times from the viewpoint of the principle of creating female vengeful ghosts and sexuality.
The rejected courtship of a woman in the ghost stories of Korea and Japan acts as a powerful motivator to create a vengeful ghost, which often appears in the form of a snake, killing the man. In Japan, there is a tendency to emphasize the closeness of women and snakes and to equate lust with demons, which increases the repulsion of female lust. On the other hand, the ghost stories of the Joseon Dynasty include an understanding of the sexual desires of the women in that era who were allowed sexual intercourse with only one man, as well as the secret desire of men toward sexual freedom. The most common female vengeful ghost story in Japanese modern times is about a woman betrayed by a man who became a vengeful ghost due to jealousy. However, in Korea, it is very rare that the vengeful spirit is caused by betrayal of a lover or husband, or jealousy. Instead, the mainstream Korean female vengeful ghost comes from sexual abuse or false accusation of adultery. The concept of chastity has deep involvement in the creation of this vengeful ghost in the Joseon Dynasty. In terms of sexuality, almost all the females ghosts in Korea are virgins while married female ghosts are mainstream in Japan. In Korea, the more pure the body is as a virgin, or the more kind the women are, the more powerful they are, and the more likely they are to benefit from releasing their resentment. On the other hand, women who showed wicked behavior in their life are often reincarnated as a vengeful ghost in Japan.
